2 Claims. (01. 312-240) Other and subordinate objects, also within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved babinet set up with the outside shelf folded and the table top supporting bars and legs removed;
Figure 2- is a view in vertical central section, partly broken away and taken in the vertical plane of the hinged edges of the back and door panels as indicated by the line 22 of Figure 3 Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the cabinet set up, and shows the outside shelf and table in operative position;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the bottom panel;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in perspective 7 illustrating the construction of the other panels;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in perspective of one of the table legs and supporting bars;
Figure 8 is a view in perspective of the back and side panels, illustrating the manner in which the same are adapted to be folded;
Figure 9 is a view in perspective view of the parts knocked down and arranged in a flat bundle.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, according to my invention, in the preferred embodiment illustrated, a cabinet, designated as a unit by the numeral I is provided comprising a pair of elongated, rectangular like back sections 2, 3, and a pair of like, elongated, rectangular side sections 4, 5, all adapted to he stood on end, the side sections 4, 5 being of the same height as the back portions 2, 3, but, narrower than the same for a reason presently seen.
The back sections 2, 3 are hinged together, as at 6, at inner vertical side edges thereof either to fold back to back or to unfold into a common plane, and are provided, opposite the hinges Ii, on the front face thereof with pairs of coacting abutment blocks 1, for preventing said sections 2, 3 from folding forwardly out of said common plane. Reinforcing cleats 8 extend along the outer vertical side edges of said back sections'2, 3 on the outside face thereof and are suitably secured thereto.
The side sections 4, 5 are hinged, as at 9, to the outer vertical side edges of said sections 2, 3 to fold fiat against the front faces of said sections 2, 3. Transverse top, bottom and intermediate grooves IO, N, I2 in the inside faces of the side panels 4, 5 extend from the front to the rear vertical edges thereof and are corspondingly located and spaced in each side panel 4, 5 to form opposed pairs. A pair of vertical grooves I3, I4 are provided in the inside faces of said panels 4, 5 adjacent the front, vertical side edges thereof and which intersect the transverse grooves II), II, I2.
Rectangular top and bottom panels I5, I6 have the ends thereof slidable in the opposed pairs of top and bottom grooves I0, II, and intermediate shelf forming panels II, I8 are similarly slidable in the opposed pairs of intermediate grooves I2. Tranverse end slide cleats I9, 20, 2|, 22 on the upper faces of the said panels I5, I6, II, I8 respectively, adapt the same to fit slidably in the opposed pairs of grooves I0, II, I2. Transverse keeper strips 23, 24, 25, 26 on the inside faces of the side panels 4, 5 and extending along said grooves II], II, I2 from the vertical grooves I3, I4 are secured in place by screws 2's to overlap said grooves II], II, l2 and the slide cleats I9, 20, 2| and 22 and thereby interlock said panels I5, I6, I'I, I8 with the side panels 3, 4 to prevent said panels from coming apart. The bottom panel I6 is provided on the upper side thereof with a longitudinal front edge cleat 28, the rear surface of which is coplanar with the front ends of the opposed pair of vertical grooves I3, I4.
A folding door 29 is provided for the cabinet and comprises a pair of elongated, rectangular, similar door panels 33, 3|, which are adapted to stand on end on the bottom panel I6 and which are hinged together at side edges thereof, as at 32, to fold back to back and to unfold into co-planar edge abutting relation. The door panels 30, 3|, when unfolded, are adapted to slidably fit at the free side edges thereof in the vertical grooves I3, I4, so that said door 29 is adapted to be slid downwardly between the side panels 4, 5 into closing position to rest on the bottom panel IS with its lower edge confined behind cleat 28 whereby said door panels 30, 31 are prevented from unfolding. As best shown in Figure 2, the door 29 slides into closing position in front of the top and said intermediate panels l5, l7, l8, and confines the same against the back panels 2, 3 to maintain said panels 15, IT, I8 in place.
Coming now to the means for providing the cabinet with an outside shelf and a table, a shelf panel 32 is hinged, as at 33, on the outside face of one side panel, for instance 3, to fold flat against said panel, as shown in Figure 1, or, be swung upwardly on the hinges 33 into horizontal shelf forming position as best shown in Figure 1. A support bar 34 is provided to be removably fitted at its ends in slots 35, '36 in said side panel i and the free end of said shelf panel 32, respectively, to maintain said shelf panel 32' in horizontal position.
The'folding door 29 is designed to be removed from the cabinet I and used as a table top. To support said door 29 in table top forming position, a pair of supporting bars 31, 38 are provided to be removably inserted at inner ends thereof in slots 39, 10 in the front edges of the side panels 6, and are provided at the outer ends thereof with legs til, 42 pivoted thereto by bolts, as at 43, to fold alongside said bars, or,
be swung into upright position to support said bars 31, 38 in horizontal position. Stop blocks 34, 46 on said bars 31, 38 secured thereto by screws 46 limit swinging of said legs 4|, 42 into upright position.
As will be understood, with the folding door 2e removed from the cabinet I, the top, bottom and intermediate panels l5, 16, ll, 18 may be slid forwardly out of the grooves 10, H, l2, so that the back panels 2, 3 and the side panels 4, 5 may be folded. As shown in Figure 9, the back panels 2, 3 may be folded back to back and the side panels 4, 5 folded upon opposite sides of the folded pair of back panels *2, 3 with the shelf panel 32 folded flat against the side panel 4. Then, the top, bottom and the intermediate shelf panels l5, l6, l1, 18 may be stacked on top of the folded door panels 3B, 31 and the stack placed on top of the folded side panels 5, for instance. The support . bars 31, 38 with the legs 4 I d2 folded thereon may then be included in the stack with the support bar 33 also included, all the parts being arranged parallel longitudinally so as to form a compact fiat bundle.
The manner in which the described parts are set up will be readily understood without specific description.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to certain modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A cabinet having spaced vertical side panels extending from front to rear, a front edge of each panel having a slot therein, a pair of bars removably fitted at one end in said slots to extend forwardly and horizontally from the cabinet, legs on the other ends of said bars for supporting said bars at said other ends in horizontal position, said legs being pivoted on said bars for folding alongside the same when said bars are removed, vertical confronting grooves in said side panels adjacent said front edges, and a table member supported on said bars for removal therefrom, said table member being slidably received in said grooves to close said cabinet after said bars are removed.
2. A cabinet having spaced vertical side panels extending from front to rear, a front edge of each panel having a slot therein, a pair of bars removably fitted at one end in said slots to extend forwardly and horizontally from the cabinet, legs on the other ends of said bars for supporting said bars at said other ends in horizontal position, vertical confronting grooves in said side panels, and a table member supported on said .bars for removal therefrom, said table member being slidably received in said grooves to close said cabinet after said bars are removed.
