Description

J; FQQSE. STHAMER (No mum.
No. 255,157. Patnted Mar.21,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JACOB FOOSE, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,157, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed December 29, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB FoosE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsy1vania,have invented certain Improvements in Steamers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable devices for steaming tobacco and feed, heating rooms, boiling water, and for use for producing steam for any culinary or household purpose; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to prevent the passage of the water from the boiler into the feed-pipes, and, second, to firmly support the boiler and heater. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of my steamer, with portions of the boiler and heater cut away in order to show the internal arrangement of the same; Fig. 2, a top view of the watercheck, and Fig. 3 a top view, through the section an, of the heater showing the heatingchamber and grate.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My device consists of a boiler. B, and heating apparatus A. The top of the boiler is slightly concave, and has a discharge cone or dome, C, (from which the feed-pipe is supplied,) in its center. Beneath the dome O, and closing the opening of the same into the boiler B, is a circular concave water-check, D. The bottom of'this check D is steam-tight, but the perimeter has two valves, a, opposite each other, which work inwardly, each having a spring, 8, to keep it closed unless acted upon by the escaping steam. The top 1) of the check is perforated with openings to allow the passage of steam into and through the dome (J, from which it passes into the feed-pipe P, supplied with a stop-cock, S. In this arrangement water is prevented from escaping from the boilerinto the pipes by the water-check, the perforated top of the check and the cone shape of the domeO freein gthe steam from any water which may have accompanied its passage through the valves.
The boiler is supported by the annular base E, of the diameter of and secured to the boiler at its lower end. An expansion-foot, F, secured to the center of the under side of the bottom of the boiler, extends to within a short distance of the floor, and prevents too great depression of the boiler-bottom by the generation of steam. The annular base affords a firm support for the boiler, preventing the jar incidental to the passage of water between the boiler and heating-chamber yet to be mentioned, and at thesame time protects theheated' bottom of the boiler from the passage of cold air under the same, while the expansion-foot, being shorter than the base E, supports the center of the boiler, when depressed by the pressureofthe steam, withoutbecominga pivot about which the steamer might rock, the difference in length between the foot and base being such as to compensate for the depression of the bottom caused by a working head of steam.
The tire-box G of the stove A is surrounded by a water-heating chamber, I, connected with the boiler by two pipes, O and O. The first pipe, 0, connects the bottom of the boiler with the lower part of the heating-chamber, and the second, 0, the top of said heating-chamber with the upper part of the boiler. The use of these two pipes permits the passage of water of different temperatures between the boiler and chamber by means of different pipes, facilitating the heating of the water, and consequently the making of steam. chamber has a spigot, I), attached to it.
The side of the stove toward the boiler is upheld by the pipes O and O,and on the other by one leg, 9. The leg 9 rests in the ash-pan, and serves as a pivot about which the ash-pan is revolved in turning it from under the stove to free it from ashes. The shifting and drawing grate h is held in place by lugs Z.
The boiler is supplied with water through the feeder H, which extends from the top thereof down to the bottom, the lower end curving so as to throw the water into the boiler laterally. It also has attached an escape-pipe, f, connected with the safety-valve a, and a whistle, w, which may be detached, if necessary, to make any other connect-ion in its place, or form a simple blow-oft and-a watere'e The heating- The stove is a self-feeder, having a resertop and valves 11, in combination withaboiler, voir, 1', for fuel. The boiler and base are built B, and dome O, substantially as and for the of heavy galvanized tank-iron, and the conpurpose specified. necting-pipes and chamber 1 of heavy copper 2. Inasteamer, the combination of the boiler 15 covered with galvanized iron. B, annular base E, and the expansion-foot F,
The dome 0 may be shaped differently from as and for the purpose set forth. that described, as I do not limit myself to that precise form. JACOB FOObE' WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to Witnesses: 1o secure by Letters Patent, is WM. It. GERHART, 1. The water-check D, having a perforated W. B. WILEY.
