VApplication January 7, 1947, Serial No. 720,501
My invention relates to a new, useful and amusing novelty receptacle and has for one of its -objects to associate a jointed image or gure with the cover of a receptacle whereby when said cover, or a portion thereof, is opened and closed, the image, or a section or sections thereof will move to various positions thereby giving an animated appearance to the ligure or image.
Another object of this invention is to provide a jointed image having a portion or section thereof mounted on a stationary device and another or other portions resting on a movable device contiguous said stationary device which when the latter is moved, will impart movements to said other portion or portions of the image.
A further object of the present invention is to provide the combination with a receptacle having a swingingly mounted lid, of a jointed image so mounted that the movements of the lid will impart movements to the image whereby the latter will function, in some respect, similar to the subject of which the image is a likeness.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a jointed image having a portion fixed, at least temporarily, to a surface and having another or other portions resting on another and swingingly movable surface to impart an animated appearance to the image as the movable surface is actuated.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe one embodiment thereof in detail, referring by numerals, to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:
Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a novelty receptacle in a closed position and constructed in accordance with my invention.
i Fig. 2 is an enlarged side View thereof in an open position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same in the closed position, and
llig. 4 is a top plan view of the device.
In carryingkout the invention as herein embodied 5 represents the body of a receptacle of any suitable size, configuration or design and Ifor purposes of illustration. only said receptacle body is shown as including a bottom 6, side walls l, a front wall kand a rear wall 9. On top of the rear and side walls is mounted a partial top or closure l0 which provides a normally station- V2 claims. (01. 46-116) ary surface for a purpose to be presently described. -Inside of the receptacle body is mounted a partition II, the outer surface of: which is flush Vor in line with the inner edge of the partial top or closure I0 to provide a storage chamber I2 for cigarettes, cigars, candies, cakes, jewelry or any other goods or items according to the desires of manufacturers, storekeepers or the users.
Pivotally hinged or otherwise hingedly or swingingly connected to the normally stationary partial closure or top yI0 is a movable closure or lid I3 which, for purposes of illustration only, is shownas having cut-out notches I4 at the sides for the reception of the ears l5 projecting from the ends of the partial closure or top I 0 with pins I6r projected through said ears and into the lid I3. The jointed image I'l which is herein shown as representing a dog is used for illustration only and may be the image of a human being, either real or fabled, any animal, either real or fanciful, denizen of the ocean, insect, reptile, bird or other suitable subject. The image I'I preferably includes three sections, viz., a rear section I8, an intermediate section I9 and a front section 20, as well as an appendage section 2 I.
. The rear section I8 is mounted in a normally stationary position on the partial closure or top I0, as the stationary surface, by a suitable connecting agency, such as dowels 22. An end of the intermediate section I9 is pivotally connected to the rear section I8 by a pivot pin 23 and said pivot'fpin 23 is positioned in an angular location above and to the rear of the position of the pivot pin or hinge point I6. The opposite or forward end of the intermediate section merely rests onl the swinging closure or lid I3 as the movable surface, so that a relative movement occurs between the parts I3 and I9 as they both move in different arcs about their respective pivot points. The front section 20 is pivoted at its rear end to the forward end of the intermediate section by a pivot pin 24 which is normally to the rear of and above the forward edge of the swinging lid I3 3 of the swinging lid or movable surface due to gravity.
The swinging lid or movable surface may be actuated in any suitable manner but for purposes of illustration, the appendage 2| is shown as pivoted to the rear section I8 of the image by the pivot pin 25. One end of a connector 26, such as a length of wire, is pivotally attached to the appendage section 2| at a point intermediate the ends thereof by a pivot pin `2.1 and projects through a narrow slot '28 in the back wall 9 into the interior of the receptacle 5. The inner end of the connector 26 is pivotally attached to a tongue 29 by a pivot pin 30, Which tongue is fastened to the swinging lid I3 and extends through an aperture 3| in the upper `portion of the partition I I.
Considering the specific device shown herein, for purposes of illustration only, the operation `is as follows: By depressing the appendage section or tail 2| motion will be transmitted through the connector 26 and the tongue 29 to the swinging lid |3 thus moving the latter from a rest or closed position to some elevated location. This will change the positions of the lid I3 and the intermediate or body and front or head sections `relative to one another which will cause the outer end of the lid to finally assume a position inside of the location of the pivot pin 24 and the head 20 will swing over said outer edge of the lid by gravity, as shown in Fig. 2.
Each time the swinging lid i3 is moved away .from or towards the closed position the image a normally stationary position on the stationary surface, an intermediate image section pivoted to the rear section above and back of the location of the connection between said surfaces and having a free end resting on the movable surface, a front image section pivoted to the intermediate section and also having a portion resting on the movable surface, an appendage image Section pivoted to the rear section, and means connecting the appendage section and 'the movable surface whereby ysaid movable surface will impart an animated appearing movement to the image when the appendage image section is actuated.
2. In a device of the kind described, a stationary surface, a swinging surface hingedly connected to said 4stationary surface, a jointed image mounted on the surfaces and including at least three sections pivoted to one another and constituting rear, body and head elements, said rear section being fixed to the stationary surface and the other sections loosely resting on the .swing-ing surface with the joint between the rear and 'body sections above and to the rear of the hinge so that as vsaid swinging surface is moved up and down and the head section adapted to pass oif and swing over the edge of said swinging surface as the latter -is elevated to approximately its highest limit, and means to actuate said swinging surface.
