a spiral groiite 4% extending about-and aibngit's' Outer surface. A cable 43 is connected to each spindle at 44 and is windable within groove 42 by rotation of the gear and spindle unit. The opposite end of each cable is secured to weight 32, as by an eye 56, so that winding of the cable about the spindle effects upward movement of the drum along shaft 25. The gears are retained against outward displacement from shaft 39 by thrust washers 45 and nuts 46. The outer surface of bracket 21 forms a horizontally extending stationary bevel gear 41 engaging gears 40 to require rotation of gears 40 about shaft 39 in response to bodily revolution of the gears about shaft 25, and to similarly require such bodily revolution upon rotation of the gears about shaft 39.
Compressed air is supplied through inlet 48,
. which communicates with flexible spiral tube 49 through swivel connection 50 of known type. Flexible tube 49 connects with a short outwardly extending conduit 51, which leads directly into hose 2| to permit dispensing of air through chuck 24. Similarly, water is supplied to hose through inlet 52, swivel connection 53, a flexible spiral tube corresponding to tube 49 (not shown), and outwardly extending conduit 54.
In use, drums 31 are normally urged downwardly by spring 31 and the effect of gravity on weight 32 to the position in which the upper or water hosedrum is illustrated in Fig. 2. Withdrawal of either hose through its hose-passing opening rotates the corresponding drum BI and shaft 25, and causes gears 40 to bodily revolve about the axis of shaft 25. 40 with stationary gear 41 during such revolving motion causes gears 40 to simultaneously rotate in opposite directions about shaft 39 and wind cables 43 about spindle portions 4!. the cables retracts drum 3| upwardly against the influence of gravity on the weight and against the force of spring 31. The lower or air hose is illustrated in Fig. 2 as thus partially withdrawn 'and with its drum moved upwardly. When a hose is released after such manual withdrawal from the housing, the spring and weight immediately displace the drum downwardly toward the normal position, and, as a result of that movement, unwind cables 43 from-their respective gears 40. The resultant rotation of gears 40 about shaft 39 causes their bodily revolution about stationary gear 47 in a hose winding direction. As will be understood, the revolving motion is transmitted through the two shafts to drum 3|, resulting in automatic take-up or retraction of the hose to the normal condition.
Iclaim:
1. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable shaft, a, rotatable winding drum disposed about said shaft, said drum being axially movable along said shaft, and means operable by rotation of said shaft to rotate said drum in response to axial displacement of the drum.
2. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable shaft of non-circular cross-sectional configuration, a hose winding drum having an axial opening of corresponding sectional configuration and disposed about said shaft in predetermined angular relation thereto, said drum being axially movable along said shaft, and means operable to rotate said shaft and thereby said drum in response to axial displacement of the drum.
3. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a movable shaft, a rotatable and axially movable hose winding drum disposed about said shaft, and means operable by movement of said shaft. to rotate said drum in response to axial displace- Winding of Engagement of gears ment of the drum, said last mentioned means including a flexible member connected to said drum and means for winding said flexible member.
4. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a hose winding drum mounted for both rotation and axial movement, and means operable to rotate said drum in response to axial movement thereof, said means including a flexible member extending axially beyond said drum.
5. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a hose winding drum mounted for both rotation and axial movement, and means operable to rotate said drum in response to axial movement thereof, said means including a flexible member connected to and extending axially beyond said drum and means for winding said flexible member.
6. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a hose winding drum mounted for both rotational and axial movement, a flexible member connected to said drum and extending therefrom in a first axial direction, and means operable by said flexible member to rotate said drum in response to movement of the drum in the opposite axial direction.
7. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a hose winding drum mounted forv both rotational and axial movement, a fiexiblemember connected to said drum and extending therefrom in a first axial direction, and means operable by said flexible member to rotate said drum in response to movement of the drum in the opposite axial direction, said means including a rotatable spin-v dle about which said flexible member is windable and adapted to be rotated by the unwinding of said member upon drum movement in said opposite direction.
8. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable shaft, a hose winding drum carried about said shaft and angularly keyed thereto for rotation therewith, said drum being axially movable along said shaft, a flexible member connected to said drum and extending therefrom'in a first axial direction, and means operable by said flexible member to rotate said shaft and thereby to rotate said drum in response to movement of the drum in the opposite axial direction.
9. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable shaft, a hose' winding drum carried about said shaft and angularly keyed thereto for rotation therewith, said drum being axially movable along said shaft, aflexible member connected to said drum and extending therefrom in a first axial direction, and means operable by said flexible member to rotate said shaft and thereby to rotate said drum in response to movement of the drum in the opposite axial direction, said means including a rotatable spindle about which said flexible member is windable and adapted to be rotated by the unwinding of said member upon drum movementin said opposite direction.
10. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable sh'aft,a hose winding drum carried about" said shaft and angularly keyed thereto for rotation therewithQsaiddrumbeing axially movable along said shaft, a flexible member connected to said drum and extending therefrom in a first axial direction, means operable by, said flexible member to rotate said'shaft and thereby to rotate said drum in response to movement of the drum in the opposite axial direction, said means including a rotatable spindle about which said flexible member is windable and adapted to be rotated the unwinding ofsaid'member upon drummovement in said opposite direction, and including means mounting said spindle for rotation about an axis fixed relative to said shaft.
11. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a hose winding drum mounted for both rotational and axial movement, a flexible member connected to said. drum and extending therefrom in a first axial direction, means operable by said flexible member to rotate said drum in response to movement of the drum in the opposite axial direction, said means including a rotatable spindle about which said flexible member is windable and adapted to be rotated by the unwinding of said 3 member upon drum movement in said opposite direction, means mounting said spindle for rotation about an'axis fixed relative to said shaft,
a gear rotatable with said spindle about said axis, and'a second and stationary gear engageand rigidly carried thereby, a pair of inwardly facing bevel gears rotatably carried by said second shaft at either side of said first mentioned shaft, each of said gears having a spindle projection to which one of said flexible members-is secured and about which said member is windable, said spindles and their associated gears being rotatable about said second shaft by the unwinding of said flexible members upon movement of said drum in the reverse direction of said first axial direction, and a stationary bevel gear engageable by said rotatable gears to cause said rotatable gears to bodily revolve when rotated about said second shaft, said revolving motion being transmitted through both of saidshafts to said drum to thereby cause drum rotation in response to axial displacement of the drum.
13. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a movable shaft, a rotatable and axially movable hose winding drum disposed about said shaft and movable relative'thereto, and means operable by I 6 movement of said shaft to rotate the drum in response to axial displacement of the drum.
14. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable shaft, a rotatable and axially movable hose winding drum disposed about said shaft and movable relative thereto, and means operable by rotation of said shaft to rotate the drum in response to axial displacement of the drum.
15. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rotatable shaft, a rotatable hose winding drum disposed about said shaft and axially movable relative thereto, means keying said shaft and drum for rotation together, and means operable to rotate said shaft and thereby said drum in response to axial displacement of the .drum.
16. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a movable solid shaft, a rotatable and axially movable hose winding drum disposed about said shaft, and means operable by movement of said shaft to rotate the drum in response to axial displacement thereof.
17. Hose reeling apparatus, comprising a rothe drum, and means operable by said flexible member to rotate the drum in response to axial movement thereof.
