CURTAIN STRETCHER AND DRIER Filed Feb. 19, 1948 I Fig. 4 24 26 32 Joseph J. Ze/eznil:
- INVENTOR.
BY 2mm WW 8m Patented Apr. 24, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a curtain stretcher and dryer and has for its primary object to hold curtains or like fabric articles in an extended position while drying.
Another object is to enable the device to be employed for supporting and stretching curtains of different sizes.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a hollow cylindrical body of foraminous material, a band encircling the cylindrical body adjacent one end, radial spikes extending outwardly from said band, a strap adapted to be detachably attached to the cylindrical body in encircling relation therewith, and spikes carried by said strap and adapted to extend radially outwardly when the strap is in body encircling position,. and to cooperate with the spikes on the band in holding a curtain extended and in body encircling position.
Other features include a hook at each end of the strap for entrance into an opening in the foraminous body to removably support the strap in encircling relation thereto, annular guards at opposite ends of the cylindrical body, and a suspension hook at one end of the body to facilitate the suspension of the body in a vertical position.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a curtain stretcher and dryer embodying the features of this invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the dryer illustrated in Figure 1; I
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of one end of the dryer, and
Figure 4 is an edge view of the removable strap.
Referring to the drawings in detail, this improved curtain stretcher and dryer comprises a body It of foraminous material such as hardware cloth which is curved to form a hollow cylinder so as to provide a foraminous structure which will allow air to circulate through and around articles of fabric such as curtains which may be held in body encircling relation as will be more fully hereinafter explained. Encircling the body adjacent one end in fixed relation thereto i a band 12 provided with outwardly extending radial spikes or pins 54 upon which the curtain or other fabric to be dried is impaled. A suitable scale l5 extends longitudinally of the body It and is preferably graduated in inches so that the curtain or fabric supporting strap to be more fully hereinafter described may be located about the body I!) a definite distance from the band I2. Transversely extending cross-bars l8 extend across opposite ends of the cylindrical body In and are provided at their outer ends with annular guard rails 20 which are of a diameter greater than the diameter of the cylindrical body ID. A suitable suspension hook 22 is coupled to the dryer and stretcher at the intersections of the cross-bars [8 at one end of the cylinder ID to provide a supporting means by which the device may be held suspended in a vertical position.
A strap 24 formed of a strip of metal is provided at one end with a hook 26 which is adapted to engage in one of the interstices in the body Ill in order to anchor one end of the strap to the body. The strap 24 is provided with a longitudinal row of outwardly extending spikes or pins 28 which project in a direction opposite the hook 26 so that when the strap is placed in encircling position about the body ID, the spikes 28 will project radially to cooperate with the spikes M in holding a curtain or like piece of fabric extended when it is in cylinder encircling position on the dryer. The end of the strap 24 remote from the hook 26 is provided with a curved extension 30 terminating at its end remote from the strap 24 in a reverse curved portion 32 which forms a tongue for entrance in one of the interstices in the body [0 in order to hold the opposite end of the strap 24 in proper position on the body Ill and adjacent the hook 26. y
In use, when it is desired to apply a curtain or like piece of fabric to the cylinder It} for drying and stretching, the strap 24- is placed in cylinder encircling position by engaging the hook 26 in one of the interstices and bending the strap 24 about the cylinder, entering the reverse curved latch portion at the opposite end of the strap into an opening in the foraminous body is adjacent the hook 26. Obviously, when the width of the curtain or other fabric item is known, the scale it may be employed to locate the strap 24 a proper distance from the band l2. With the strap 24 thus positioned about the body i8, it is obvious that the curtain or other fabric member to be stretched and dried is impaled upon the spikes i4 and 28 adjacent opposite edges, thus holding it in extended position on the cylinder IS. The guards 20 will prevent the contact of the fabric with a surface upon which the cylinder may rest when in a horizontal position and the hook 22 may be employed to suspend the cylinder in a vertical position during the drying of the curtain or other fabric. While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
l. A curtain stretcher and dryer comprising a hollow cylindrical body of foraminous material, a band encircling the cylindrical body adjacent one end,;radia1-,spi1es extending ,outwardlyfrom said band,-a strap adapted to be detachably attached to the cylindrical body in encircling relation therewith, spikes carried by the strap and adapted to extend radially outward WhenZ-the strap is in body encircling position to cooperate with the spikes on the band in holding a curtain about the cylindrical body,.and annular guards at the ends of the cylindrical body, said guards forming supports for holding the body andspikes spaced from a floor when the device lies hori- 2.; A- curtain stretcher-end dryer comprisingia a reaterdiameter,-than;'theggylinderiz-to iorm supports when the cylinder lies horizontally.
