I THEO H. PURPLE, OF CONSTANTINE, MICHIGAN,
CURTAIN-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed June 3, 1907. Serial No. 376,954.
In addition to the bars so far described there is an independent or 4separate bar which is also provided with iiXed pins H T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Trino H. PURPLL a citizen of the United States of America, and a iesident of Constantine, count of St. Joseph, and State of Michigan, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
cut-away portion J1 as shown .in Fig. 3. Cn one end of the bar J is an angle plate J2, and on the other end is a cam J3. The distance between the plate are located in a My invention relates to curtain stretchers, J2 and cam J3 is egual to the distance bewhich are also applicable as clothes driers, tween the outside faces of the end lates D and has for its object improvements in and E. It will be apparent that tlie angle such devices. plate J2 and cam J3 serve as a means for The present device is designed to occupy securing the bar J at any desired position a small space, to be completely adjustable on the reel.
The end plate D is provided with a series of holes D1 (Fig. 4) and secured by a suitable chain to the adjacent standard A is a pin which passes through a hole in the standard and serves to hold the reel at any desired position. When the pin is removed 4the reel is free to rotate on the shaft C. Around the edges of the end plate D and the edges of the intermediate plate G are T-shaped slots T in which are inserted sliding pins M. These pins are bent out of wire so as to have a T- shaped head, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and an off-set at the pointed end. These off-sets are turned so that they trail inward toward the center of the apparatus from each. of the plates which have the slots T.
In applying a lace curtain to the stretcher the bar J and pin K are first removed. The operator then adjusts the plate G on the shaft C so that the distance between the plates D and G is equal to the width of the curtain.
so as to successfully hold anything from a small piece of lace or cloth up to the widest and longest lace curtain, to be conveniently manipulated, and whennot in use to be knocked down7 so that it may be packed away.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a plan; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail in end elevation; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section showing one of the curtain holding pins and the slot therefor; and Fig, 6 is a perspective view of the pin.
In the said drawin s A, A, are two upright standards whici are connected together by a cross bar or bridge-tree B On the cross-bar B are brackets B1, and running the base of each standard A is a screw A1. Thumb nuts A2 serve to hold the brackets 1 to the standards A. AAs the standards A are not rigidly secured together at any other place the mere removal of the thumb nuts A2 permits the frame work to be taken down.
Supported in a hole in the top of one standard A, and in a slot in the top of the other standard, is a bar or shaft C upon which is mounted a rectangular reel. This reel consists of two end plates D and E, and four connecting bars F. There is also an intermediate late G provided with a hub G1, and whicla is secured at any desired adjustment on the shaft C by means of a set screw G2. Cne of the bars F is cut away, as 'shown at F1 in Fig. 8, and in this cutaway portion are a series of iXed pins H This bar and one or more of the other bars are graduated as shown in Fig. 2. The out side corners of the bars F are given a long round as shown vin Fig. 3, the object of which is to prevent the formation of creases in a curtain wound upon the reel.
pins H in bar F and follows this by hooking the edges (sides) of the curtain on the pins M in plates D and G. In doing this she turns the reel on its shaft C until she comes to the other end of the curtain. She then inserts the pin K to hold the reel stationary, lows this by attaching the supplementary bar J adjacent to the last end of the curtain. She then secures the iinal end of the curtain to the hooks or pins H on the bar J.
The reel is usually made of such size that the longest curtain will go ab out twice around, and of a length sufficient to accommodate the widest curtain. The bar F which holds the pins H, being grooved and the pins being below the outer surface of the bar, the second wrap of the curtain does not strike the pins. The adjustable pins M and their slots are so arranged that the said pins are securely held in proper position while at the same time like those previously described, which pins She then hooks one end of the curtain on the and foliio they are freely movable lengthwise in their slots. These are characteristics particularly desirable in devices of this kind.
The graduations heretofore mentioned vand illustrated in Fig. 2 assist the operator in sesion for locking the reel in any desired position is advantageous in manipulating vthe device when applying the curtain.
When the curtain is in place the stretcher may be lset near a stove and the reel secured so as to hold one face toward the stove.
reel may then be turned on its axis so as 'to' o'cked in that position.
iat I vclaim is l. In a device of the class described, a reel mounted to rotate upon an axis, said reel being composed of end plates connected together by longitudinal bars, a series of pins secured to one of said bars and serving as a means for holding lthe end of a curtain, aseries of adjustable pins secured to one of said end plates and serving as a means for holding one edge of the curtain, an intermediate plate axial-ly adjustable to any desired Aposition between the end plates, and other adjustable pins secured to the intermediate plate and serving to hold lthe opposite edge of the curtain.
2. In a device ofthe character described, a series of parallel "bars mounted to rotate about an axis, a series of vpins secured to one of said bars an previously mentioned bars, and a series of other pins secured to said separate kbar and serving to hold the other end of the curtain.
3. In a :curtain stretcher, a series yof parallel bars mounted to rotate about an axis, a series of pins secured to one of said bars and serving to hold one end of a curtain, said pins being so located I'that they Will not be touched by a curtain passing over said bar to the next Vadjacent bar, and a separate adjustable bar provided With pins for holding the other end of the curtain.
4. In a curtain stretcher, a reel composed of bars upon which a curtain may be Wound, one of said bars `being provided With a groove, a series of curtain 'holding pins located in said groove as described, and a separate adjustable bar provided with other curtain holding pins.
l 5. Ina curtain stretcher,
l of bars upon which a curtain may be Wound in successive layers, curtain holding pins 'being secured to one of said bars and so located as not to be touched by succeeding layers of the curtain Wound uponthe reel, and an adjustable device for securing the linal end of the curtain.
6. In a curtain stretcher, a series of bars mounted to rotate about an axis and so arranged `as to constitute a reel upon Which a curtain may be Wound, curtain holding devices secured to one of said bars and so arranged as not to touch succeeding layers of curtain Wound upon the reel, and an adjustable bar arranged to be secured to the reel over layers of curtain already Wound thereon, said adjustable bar being provided With means for securing the iinal end of the curtain.
l 7. A curtain holding reel mounted to rotate upon an axis, devices on said reel and located inside of the exterior surface thereof for securing one end of a curtaink to be Wound upon the reel, other devices arranged to be adjustable to suit the Width of the curtain and also arranged to project beyond the exterior surface of the reel so as to engage and hold each successive layer of curtain at the sides thereof, and a removable bar arranged to be secured at any position on the reel over the curtain Wound thereon and provided Witlh devices for securing the final end of the ree 8. In a reel upon Which a curtain may be Wound for drying or stretching, a bar provided With a series of pins for holding the lirs't end of a ycurtain Wound upon the reel, other pins carried by the reel and serving as means for securing the sides of as it is being Wound upon the separate bar arranged to be secured at any position on kthe reel over the layers of Acurtains already Wound thereon, said separate bar being provided with means 'for holding the linal end of the curtain.
Signed at Constantine, Mich., this 31st day of May 190 n THEO II. PURPLE. Witnesses:
