Application December 1, 1949, Serial No. 130,390
1 Claim. 1
'I'his invention relates to the class of supports and more particularly to a picture hanger of that type embodying a plate so secured to a picture frame as to render the frame capable of being hung upon a wall directly upon a nail or other fastening means.
An object of the invention is the provision of a hanger for picture frames or the like which is so constructed as to render it possible to secure the picture frame to a wall or other surface by the additional use of a nail or other similar element.
Yet another object of the invention resides in the provision of a supporting means for a picture frame or the like which includes an aperture formed in the back plate of the picture frame and includes a supporting means extendingr across the aperture and adapted to engage a nail or like element secured in a wall surface.
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of a hanger for a picture irarne or the like that is strong, durable, highly efficient in operation, simple in construction and design, inexpensive to manufacture, and capable of use on different size picture frames.
These, together with the various ancillary cbjects of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this hanger, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure l is an exploded perspective view of the invention showing how it is emplaced on a nail driven into a wall surface;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the invention showing the picture frame or the like in supported engagement upon a nail secured in the wall surface; and
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view as taken along line 3--3 in Figure 2.
With lcontinuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral I0 designates a back plate which is formed from relatively strong pasteboard or like substance. Placed over the back plate Iii is a photograph or other picture I2 with its front surface covered by a plate of glass or transparent plastic I4. In the picture frame used to illustrate the concept of the invention, a tape binding I5 is emplaced about the edges of the plates IU and I4 and the picture I2 to bind the entire unit in a strong and rigid manner. Obviously other means may be used to secure the plate I4 to the picture I2 and plate I0.
Formed in the plate I0 is an aperture I6 which is preferably circular in shape but may be square,
2 oval, oblong, diamond shaped, or be of any other desired configuration. A supporting member I8 is secured to the plate I0 in such position as to extend across the aperture I6. As best shown in Figure 3, the supporting member IB is preferably of substantially U-shape with substantially parallel legs 20 and 22 and a central connecting portion 24. However, it is contemplated that the supporting member may be formed with its ends straight or bent over or may be of another convenient shape. 1
Secured about the opening I6 is an eyelet 25 which may ce formed of cloth, metal or plastic. The eyelet 2e acts as a retainer means and additionally prevents the supporting member I8 from pulling out of the plate I0. The eyelet is preferably glued` or elsewise secured to the plate I0.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, a nail 28 is driven into a wall surface at an angle of approximately 45D from the vertical. Then the picture frame or other device using the invention is placed in contact with the wall with the central connecting portion 24 of the supporting member in contacting engagement with the nail 28.
Since from the foregoing, the construction and advantages of this hanger are readily apparent, `further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modica'tions will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specication and accompanying drawings, it is not intended that the invention be limited to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modications and equivalents may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what :is claimed as new is: Y
A hanger comprising a plate having an aperture therethrough, supporting means secured to said plate and extending across said aperture, said supporting means being of substantially U- shape having a pair of substantially parallel legs and a central connecting portion, and retaining means secured to said plate engaging said central connecting portion, said retaining means having an aperture therethrough in alignment with said rst recited aperture.
