Definitions
- curved core means a core having a plurality of radially nested iiatwise curved lamination layers. Any desired number of such cores may be linked with the same winding so as to constitute a multiple part core. This is usually done to improve the space factor oi the window of the winding.

Description
Patented Apr. 10, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRICAL INDUCTION APPARATUS Gareth G. Somerville, Pittsfield, Mass., assignor to General Electric Company, a corporation of New York This invention relates to electric induction apparatus and more particularly to improvements in such apparatus comprising a curved core. 
 This is a division oi my application, Serial Number 752,620 led June 5, 1947, now Patent No. 2,534,312, which in turn is a division of my application, Serial Number 655,961 iiled March 21, 1946, and assigned to the same assignee. 
 As here used the term curved core means a core having a plurality of radially nested iiatwise curved lamination layers. Any desired number of such cores may be linked with the same winding so as to constitute a multiple part core. This is usually done to improve the space factor oi the window of the winding. 
 This invention is characterized by a novel frame for cradling such a core and also clamping it properly as to support it and the winding or windings linking it. 
 An object of the invention is to provide a new' and improved electric induction apparatus. 
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved method of assembling an electric induction apparatus. 
 A further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved frame assembly for a curved magnetic core. 
 The invention will be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claim. 
 In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a iront elevation View, partly broken away, of an induction apparatus embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation view of a multi-part curved core suitable for use in my invention, and Fig. 3 is a side View of the lower part oi the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. 
 Referring now to the drawing and more particularly to Fig. 2, the illustrated core is a singlephase distributed type core having a central winding leg i and a divided yoke  2. As seen in this iigure, it is symmetrical about a vertical center plane which is perpendicular to the paper and the duplicate rightand left-hand halves comprise three nested core members  3, 4, 5 and E, l, 8, respectively. Actually the core is also symmetrical about a second plane at right angles to the dividing plane referred to above and which is parallel to the paper in Fig. l so that the rightand left-hand halves of the core actually each consist of siX core elements, the ones directly in front and in back of the last-mentioned plane being duplicates. As seen in Fig. 1, the core elements each have a single joint 8 which is at the upper end of the straight winding leg in each 1 Claim. (Cl. F75- 356) Cil case. As shown in this ligure, these joints appear successively to be staggered instead of being in vertical alignment and this is necessary so that when the core elements are opened up for receiving a conductive winding they will not extend over beyond the dimensions of the coil window. 
 The six core parts are held rmly together by tie straps Iii which are relatively wide so as to have the necessary area to provide adequate strength and at the same time are relatively thin so that there is comparatively little separation between the front and back core parts. Preferably they have shoulders I I. These straps extend slightly beyond the right and left edges of the winding leg I and the ends of the straps pass through openings in washer plates I2, which may be made of any suitable material such as pressboard, and outer steel plates I3 to which the ends of the straps are welded. 
 A View of an assembled electric induction apparatus embodying the invention is shown in Fig. l. In this ligure the core is cradled in a frame comprising angle iron members I4 which are held together by cross members I5 which are bolted thereto. Upright angle iron members I6 serve to clamp the yoke portions  2 of the core and iieXible metal strap members il, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, which are fastened to cross pieces is attached to the members IES serve to support the weight of the core. These strap members II eX- tend around underneath the core and are in tension and conform to the rounded shape of the bottom of the core. Additional cross members I9 on both theinside and outside of the upright members I@ serve to support the yoke members  2 of the core at both its inside and outside portions. 
 A coil  2@ is supported by members 2i which are fastened to the bottom members Iii and which may be adjusted in any suitable manner so as to position the coil 2S properly. The top part or" the core is clamped between members  22 which are bolted as at 23 to the upright members I5. 
 While there has been shown and described a particular embodiment of this invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes and modications can be made therein without departing from the invention and, therefore, it is aimed in the appended claim to cover all such changes and modiiications as fall Within the true spirit and scope of the invention. 
 What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: 
 A stationary electric induction apparatus comprising, in combination, a curved core having a central Winding leg and oppositely extending yoke 3 portions, said core having a generally rectangular outer configuration with rounded corners, a winding on said winding leg, a frame having two generally rectangular fabricated structural members of substantially the same configuration as the outer configuration of said core mounted respectively against the front and back of said core, cross pieces extending between said rectangular frame members for fastening them together, a plurality of flexible metal straps attached lto two of said cross members on Opposite sidesof said core for cradling the bottom of lsaid core Aand supporting its entire weight while at the same time conforming to the curvature of its bottom corners, and coil supports mounted on said frame for engaging the bottom of said winding andl maintaining it in proper position on said winding leg.
