Thisinvention relates to a reversible crusher, and an object of the invention is to provide an improved reversible crusher, preferably one having rectilinearly traveling breaker plates forming opposite side walls of a crushing chamber in which the breaker plates are sloped downwardly and inwardly so as to provide a wide feed opening or inlet leading to the reducing chamber, thereby to prevent arching and clogging of the chamber feed inlet, particuarly with certain types of materials.
A further object of the invention is to provide a reversible crusher of the above mentioned type in which guide chute means is provided to guide the material selectively to one side of the rotor or crusher chamber or the other, depending upon the direction of rotation of the rotor.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the novel features and combinations being set forth in the appended claims.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a crusher incorporating the features of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view through the crusher of Fig. l.
The embodiment of my invention herein disclosed includes a main frame II) which is generally symmetrical and includes a pair of side frame members II which are built up or fabricated from a plurality of plates, angles and the like and which are connected together by transversely extending frame members, all of which cooperate to provide a generally symmetrical reducing chamber I2 located at the center of the crusher. The sides of the reducing chamber are preferably lined with removable liners I3 and, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, each of the side frame members II includes a pair of outwardly swinging doors I4 which are normally closed and form a part of said side frame members. The top central portion of reducing chamber I2 is provided with a large or wide feed opening I5 which is located centrally of the unit and above and centrally of the feed chamber I2.
Extending transversely of the unit and through the side frame members I I is a shaft I 6 mounted at opposite ends in appropriate journal bearings I! carried on the bottom portion of the main frame I0. A reversible rotor I8 is mounted on the shaft I6 and is preferably formed of a plurality of spaced discs and pivot swing hammers I 9 carried on axially extending pivot rods 20. The axis of the rotor I8 and shaft I6 is preferably through the center of reducing chamber I2. Between each of the side walls provided by cludes a frame 22 carrying an upper drive shaft 23' which is journaled in bearings 24 provided with take-up mechanism 25 to adjust the position of the shaft 23.
Adjacent its lower end the frame 22 is provided with an idler shaft 26. Shafts 23 and 26 are provided with sprockets 21 and 28, respectively, upon which a very heavy endless chain type breaker plate 29 travels, preferably in the downward direction, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2 of the drawings. As indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the construction of each of the endless chains 29 is such that each effectively forms a substantially solid breaker surface against which material is knocked by the hammers IQ of the rotor and reduced. The take-up mechanism 25 provides for maintaining the endless chain breaker plate 29 in proper tension. This chain is driven through the drive shaft 23 and drive sprockets 27, said shaft 23 being in turn driven through a speed reducing mechanism 30 from an electric motor 3|, which motor and speed reducing mechanism are mounted on a platform 32. It is obvious that there will be a separate driving motor and speed reducing mechanism for each of the chain breaker plates 29, there being one on each platform at opposite sides of the machine.
' As best seen in Fig. l of the drawings, the upper end of each frame 22 is mounted for limited swinging movement in the main frame Ill by virtue of a plate 33 at each side which is normally flush with the adjacent side frame member II and is provided with an arcuate bottom bearing surface 3 which fits on a cooperating arcuate bearing surface provided in the bottom of a notch shaft 23, thus adjusting the breaker plate 29 toward and from the rotor I8.
This, of course, also adjusts "the bottom opening 3'! of the rebreake plate assembly 2| in position. Obviously each breaker plate assembly 2| may be individually adjusted in all of its various adjustments.
Mounted centrally of the intake or feed opening l5 and thus directly above the axis of rotation of the rotor i8 is an inverted v-shaped trough-like or peaked chute, deflector or feed guide 40 and this perferably cooperates with a shiftable fiap or butterfly valve 40 in a chute, thereabove so that the material delivered to the crusher is selectively fed to one side or the other of the feed chamber 12 and the rotor I8, depending upon the direction of rotation of said reversible rotor [8. For example, if the rotor 18 is rotating in a counter-clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 2, the material will preferably be fed to the left-hand side of the feed chamber I2.
The feed chute 40 is so positioned and has impelled to the left, in the illustration under discussion, and be first thereafter broken by the left-hand rectilinearly traveling chain breaker plate 29. The impact of this material is preferably transmitted to the frame 22 through a reinforcing and wear plate 4! forming a part thereof.
It is to be particularly noted that the downward rectilinearly traveling breaker plates 29 slope downwardly and inwardly so that the feed opening l5 and each branch thereof, which is formed by the chute or guide 40, is a relatively large opening, while the discharge opening 37 is relatively small. Of particular importance is the provision of the wide openings or maws leading to the reducing chamber [2 because it has ularly true if the hammers strike the material and impel it with a motion which has an upward vertical component rather than a downward vertical component. Therefore the downward component of movement imparted to the impelled material by the hammers I9 and the wide or large feed opening co-operate to provide an improved feeder, particularly when handling material which may tend to pack and arch and thus choke up the feed chute, which is a characteristic of iron ore.
Obviously those skilled in the art may make various changes in the details and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims hereto appended, and I therefore wish not to be restricted to the precise constructon herein disclosed.
Having thus described and shown an embodiment of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A reversible crusher including a frame providing a reducing chamber having a wide open top feed opening, a pair of spaced side rectilinearly traveling breaker plate means forming opposite sides of said reducing chamber, a reversible swing hammer rotor located centrally of said reducing chamber and between said pair of breaker plate means, said breaker plate means sloping inwardly and downwardly whereby they are spaced apart a maximum at the top and nearest said feed opening, and chute guide means above the axis of rotation of said rotor adapted to guide material selectively to one side or the other of said rotor as it is fed through said feed opening.
2. A reversible crusher including a frame providing a reducing chamber having a wide open top feed opening, a pair of spaced side breaker plate means forming opposite sides of said reducing chamber, a reversible swing hammer rotor located centrally of said reducing chamber and between said pair of breaker plate means, said breaker plate means sloping inwardly and downwardly whereby they are spaced apart a maximum at the top and nearest said feed opening, and chute guide means above the axis of rotation of said rotor adapted to guide material selectively to one side or the other of said rotor as it is fed through said feed opening.
3. A reversible crusher including a frame providing a reducing chamber having a wide open top feed opening, a pair of spaced side rectilinearly traveling breaker plate means forming opposite sides of said reducing chamber, and a reversible swing hammer rotor located centrally of said reducing chamber and between said pair of breaker plate means, said breaker plate means sloping inwardly and downwardly whereby they are spaced apart a maximum at the top and nearest said feed opening.
l. A reversible crusher including a frame providing a reducing chamber having a wide open top feed opening, a pair of spaced side endless chain traveling breaker plate means forming opposite sides of said reducing chamber, a reversible swing hammer rotor located centrally of said reducing chamber and between said pair of breaker plate means, said breaker plate means sloping inwardly and downwardly whereby they are spaced apart a maximum at the top and nearest said feed opening, and chute guide means above the axis of rotation of said rotor adapted to guide material selectively to one side or the other of said rotor as it is fed through said feed opening.
5. A reversible crusher including a frame providing a reducing chamber having a wide open top feed opening, a pair of spaced side endless chain traveling breaker plate means forming opposite sides of said reducing chamber, a reversible rotor located centrally of said reducing chamber and between said pair of breaker plate means, said breaker plate means sloping inwardly and downwardly whereby they are spaced apart a maximum at the top and nearest said feed opening, and chute guide means above the axis of rotation of said rotor adapted to guide material selectively to one side or the other of said rotor as it is fed through said feed opening.
6. A reversible crusher including a frame providing a reducing chamber having a wide-open top feed opening, a pair of spaced endless traveling chain means forming opposite sides of said reducing chamber and spaced substantially solid breaker plate surfaces therein, a reversible swing hammer rotor located centrally in said reducing chamber and between said endless chain breaker plate surfaces, said breaker plate surfaces of said chains sloping inwardly and downwardly whereby they are spaced apart a maximum at their tops and nearest said feed opening and extend downwardly adjacent and below said rotor, and a peaked deflector substantially directly above the REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
