The invention relates to a jack, and more especially to a portable or stationary fluid operated jack.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a jack of this character, wherein through multiple piston or diaphragm action under fluid pressure, either air or water, the said jack will operate for pushing or pulling power, Whichever is desired, much greater than would be developed in a larger single unit outfit. The principle is in getting as much pressure area in as small a confined space, as is possible, the jack being of novel construction and unique in the assembly of its parts, which are few in number, thus economical in repairs and replacement of such parts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a jack of this character, wherein it can be stationary or portable, and compact enough so as in the operation thereof, assures maximum holding power, it being quick acting for gripping and clamping of work in fixtures mounted on machines, benches or otherwise.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a jack of this character, wherein enough power is had for pushing or pulling whatever may be required on a limited line pressure, it being operable with ease and dispatch.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a jack of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eificient in operation, strong, durable, positive in the working thereof, assuring a firm and secure grip on work, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiments of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 88 of Figure 6 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a still further modification.
Figure 10 is a, side view showing a vise with the jack applied thereto.
Figure 11 is a view similar to Figure 10 showing another form of vise and jack application.
Figure 12 is an elevation showing the jack used as a lifting device.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, which show one form of the jack constructed in accordance with the invention, comprising an elongated cylindrical body It, having end heads H and I2, respectively, these being separable from the body through the medium of internal and external threaded connections 13 therebetween.
Within the end head I! centrally thereof is slidably fitted a terminal piston it which has its tubiform stem 15 extended centrally through the body it] to the other opposite end head [2. The stem I5 at the said other opposite end head l2 has connection with another terminal piston !6 which is slidably fitted centrally in the said head l2. The piston it has a fluid passage I! leading into the stem l 5, and to this passage is connected a fluid conducting hose, only a portion of the same is indicated at 18, of a hydraulic line system, not shown, which involves a two-way valve control set up, which is also not shown, for operating the jack.
Within the body H] concentric to the stem. l5 and longitudinally distributed therethrough is a series or multiplicity of bellows-like hollow expanding and contracting acting elements it, which are confined within separated chambers 29, created by separator plates or disks 2! and 22, respectively. The plates or disks 2i and 22 within the body iii are placed concentrically about the stem I 5, and the plates or disks 22 are anchored at 23 next to their outer peripheries thereof between spacer collars 24 to the body Iii. The collars 2d internally fit the body It against the inner wall surface thereof. The plates or disks 2i at their inner peripheries are anchored at 25 between spacer collars 2%? which embrace the stem i5, and are fixedly held by the pistons I i and i 6 in assembly with the said stem.
The collars 2 are fixedly held to the body it] by the heads H and H2 in assembly therein.
The chambers 2:; outside of the elements G9 are vented by vent holes 2? opening through the said body is and the collars 2 3 fitted thereto, while fluid is admitted and exhausted to and from the elements l9 through registering ports 28, provided in the stern is and the collars 2b fitted thereto, so that the fluid is delivered and ex hausted through the hose :8 to and from these elements in the working of the jack.
The piston l6 has a hanger eye 29, for the attachment thereof to a support, not shown,
while the piston M is provided with a female coupling extension 39, which is adapted for its separable connection with a piece of work, not shown, to be pushed or pulled by the jack when operating.
The body is of the jack can be mounted in a fixed position in any suitable manner on a support therefor, not shown, there being a threaded nipple 3! formed on the head i2 for such purpose.
In Figure of the drawings there is shown a slight modification, wherein the piston 32 which is a substitute for the piston it has detachably fitted thereto a holding knob 33, while the piston which is a substitute for the piston it has detachably connected thereto a coupling rod, a portion being indicated at In this Figure 5 of the drawings, the body 36 is adapted to be held fixed, while the pistons 32 and 3t inove relatively to each other under the influence of the expanding and contracting elements within the body.
In Figures 6, 7 and 8, of the drawings there is shown another modification of the invention, wherein in lieu of the elements is there are substituted pistons and 38, respectively, for the pla es or disks 2! and 22, heretofore described, and operating within chambers 39 as created thereby between the same within the body ill! of the jack. Also interposed between the end head t! and the piston 3'? next thereto is a coiled compression spring t2, the pistons 3i and 38 carry ing packings as, respectively.
In Figure 10 of the drawings there is shown a vise l l having a base 35 with a riser as into which is fixed horizontally the jack body, while the inside jaw ll of this vise is stationary, and the outside jaw as is movable, the latter being coupled with movable stem or" the jack, so that the latter will operate this so for the clamping of work by the said vise.
In Figure ll of the drawings there is shown another form of vise, wherein the outer jaw 69 is stationary, while the inner jaw 5% is movable by the In Figure 12 of the drawings there is shown a jack assembly hereinbeicre escribed, and denoted generally at 5!, for its service as an automobile lift device, yet the latter may be used for other lilting purposes, as should be apparent.
It should be apparent that by reversing the fluid pressure line to the jack a pushing action will be had in lieu of the pulling action as would be the case with the fluid line in the position as now shown in the drawings, namely at the end head E2 in Figure 1 thereof.
