UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo LODNER H. HOOD AND GEORGE H. FOX, OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part -of Letters Patent No. 254,652, dated March 7, 1882.
Application filed January 30, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LODNER H. HOOD and GEO. H. FOX, of Grand Haven, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in .the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specication.
Our invention relates to an improvementin spring bed -bottomsg and it consists in the combination ot' a suitable frame, a woven fabric, suitable supporting-springs, and cross bar or slat upon which the springs rest, springs which extend the full length of the bed, and which bear upward against the supportingslat, and a suitable mechanism by which the tension of the springs can be increased, as will be more` fully described hereinafter.
The object of our invention is to produce a light, cheap, and simple bed-bottom, in which both the woven fabric upon which the mattress rests and the longitudinal springs can be loosened or tightened at pleasure.
Figure 1 is a side elevation ot'ourinvention. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the same.
A represents the side supporting-bars, and B O the two end pieces, between which the ends of the woven fabric D and the longitudinal springs F have their ends fastened. Near the center of the frame is secured the crossbar G, upon which the coiled springs H are placed, and these coiled springs support the center of the Woven fabric, as shown. There may be any desired number ot' these coiled springs, and for each -coiled spring there will be preferably a longitudinal spiral spring.
In order to make the tension of the woven (Model.)
fabric and thelongitudinal springs adjustable, a casting orplate, O, is applied to two ofthe ends ofthe side supporting-pieces,and these castings have their inner ends turned upward, as shown in Fig. l. Through the turned-up end of each casting is passed a set-screw, P, which bears against one of the pieces between which the ends of the fabric and the spiral springs are held for the purpose of forcing the pieces outward, or allowing them 4to be drawn inward by the fabric, as may be desired. Where the screws are forced through the casting, so as to force the two pieces B Coutward, the tension ofthe fabric and springs willbe increased, and where the pieces are allowed to bear against the casting the tension will be decreased. The two clamping-pieces B O, at the other end of the side supporti iig-bars, A, are secured rigidly together and then fastened rigidly to the side bars, as shown.
A bed-bottom constructed as here shown and described will be very strong and durable and very elastic.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- The combination of the side supporting-bars, A, the clampingpieces B C, the cross-bar, the spiral springs placed upon the bar, the longitudinal springs, the castings which areapplied to the ends of the side supporting-bars, and the set screws, whereby the tension of the fabric and longitudinal springs can be increased or decreased at will.
In testimony whereof we attix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
