ROBERT BUTTERWORTH AND REUBEN. S. BOLLES, OF NASHVILLE, TENN;
CARRIAGE-TO P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 254,608, dated March '7, 1882.
Application filed December 6, 1881. (No model.)
To all u-hom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT BUTTER- WORTH and REUBEN S. BoLLns, citizens of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improvement in Trimming the Tops of Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in the manner of trimming the tops of buggies, carriages, or other top-vehicles.
The method heretofore generally employed of trimming the tops of vehicles leaves at the back and front a ridge projecting above the line of the top, that prevents the water from running off, which, in consequence thereof, soaks in and rots the top and head linings of the vehicle, as well as the upper part of the back curtains and quarters. Our object has been, by this invent-ion, to improve on this method of trimming, and to form at the front and rear of the top what we term a hood-vallant, which, being a continuation of the top and in a line with it, offers no impediment to the running off of the water, but carries it over and beyond the top, protecting the headlinings, curtains,&c., and at the same time for-ms a neater finish, and can be put on with less labor and time than by the old method,and with. a saving of stock.
Our invention will be readily understood from the following description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of the frontportion of the top of a vehicle trimmed by our improved method, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the rear portion. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the top complete.
Similar letters referto similarparts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A and A represent respectively the front and rear bows of the top of a vehicle; B, the roof-piece, and O the headlinings.
The manner of trimming is as follows: The head-lining, if any is used, is put in as by the old method and brought over and fastened on the top of the front and. rear bows, A and A. Apiece, a, called a facing, extending from prop to prop, is then tacked to the lower edge of the front bow, a welt or cord, b, is placed thereon, and the facing-piece (0 brought over said welt or cord and secured to the top of the bow A, as shown in Fig. 1. A piece of stiff harness-leather or other suitable material, D, is next securely fastened onto the top-bow A, over the facing-piece at, extending from prop to prop and projecting over the front edge of said bow A, as shown. This forms the front hood-valiant, and overthis the roof-piece B and side quarters of the top are brought, turned under, and stitched through the piece D at 0 close to the facing-piece a. The back is trimmed in a similar manner: the back ourtains,E, and back quarters being first securely fastened to the top of the rear bow, A, the piece of leather or other suitable material,D,
is placed thereon, projecting overthe rear edge,
and fastened securely to the top of said bow, and the roof-piece B and side quarters brought over and stitched thereto at c, in the manner above described for the front. 7
The top of a vehicle may by this method be trimmed easier, quicker, and neater finish secured than by the method generally employed, while the back curtains are not so easily torn off.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A strip of leather or other material, D or D, secured to the top of a vehicle at the front or rear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the strip D, roof-piece B, facing a, welt b, and the bow A of a vehicletop, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The herein-described improvement in the trimming of vehicle-tops, consisting in securing to the bows at front and rear a strip of leather or other material, whereby a hood is formed in line with the top or roof-piece, substantially as shown and described.
