Description

R. s. JENNINGS.
Carriage-Top.
No. 17,680. I Patented June 30. 1857.
AM. PHOTU-LXTHO. C0. N.Y, {DSBORNE'S PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
R. S. JENNINGS, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
CARRIAGE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,680, dated June 30, 1857.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. S. JENNINGS, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved hood or attachment to be applied to calash and other tops of carriages to thoroughly protect the occupants from rain or wet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the inner side of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of ditto, taken in the line (av), (:10), Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in having an apron or screen, formed of leather or prepared cloth attached to a folding bow constructed and applied to the carriage top as will be hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the carriage seat may be completely inclosed and the occupant thoroughly protected from the weather.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a bow, constructed of wood of the same sort or kind which is used for carriage top bows. The bow A corresponds in form or shape with the front bow A of the carriage top B, the outline of the top B, being shown in red. The form of the bow A, is plainly shown in Fig. 1. The bow A is made of four parts (a), (a), (b), (b). The parts (a), (a), are the side pieces; the other parts (12), (b), form the curved upper part of the bow. The two parts (b), (b), are hinged together as shown at (c), and the lower ends of the parts (1)), are hinged to the upper ends of the parts (a) as shown at (d). The lower ends of the parts (a), (a), have each a metal tenon (e), secured to them, and the inner sides of the parts (5) have each a loop (f) attached. The bow A is attached to the front bow A by placing the loops (f), over hooks or buttons (g), attached to the front bow A and having the tenons (e), fitted in staples (h) attached to the front bow. The parts (a), (a), of the bow A, extend down sufficiently far to meet the dash apron B shown in red, and the bow A is covered or has an apron or screen C attached to it, said screen being provided with look-outs (i), (i). The apron or screen C may be constructed of leather or prepared cloth, or of the same material as the top.
When the hood or attachment is not required, it is detached from the front bow A and owing to the hinged joints (0), (d), (d), the hood may be folded as indicated in red, Fig. 1. The hood thus folded may be placed within the folds of the dash apron, within the carriage seat or in any convenient place, as the hood or attachment, when folded, will not monopolize much space.
The hood or attachment, in connection with the dash apron B and top B, will fully protect the occupant of the carriage from wet.
The hood or attachment may be cheaply constructed, readily a plied and detached and will prove a va uable acquisition to calash-topped vehicles.
The invention may also be applied to standing tops, when protection from wet is desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The hood or attachment constructed of the jointed bow A, provided with the screen or apron C, and provided with loops (f), at its upper part, and tenons e, at its lower part, and applied to the top as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
R. S. JENNINGS.
