This invention relates to improvements in 'window guards. An-object of the invention is to provide an improved window guard which will be secured to the outside edge of the lower bar of an upper window frame, whereby the lower window frame may be raised at night or at any other time to ventilate a room, said window guard being so constructed that it will prevent unauthorized entrance through a window into a room equipped withthe improved window guard.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved window guard for windows, the same being adapted to be secured to the outside surface of the lower cross bar of an upper win- *dowframe, and secured in the guide channels in which said upper window frame is supposed to slide, said window guard being provided with a screen portion and with a ventilator portion, together with means for locking said window guard in the opposite sides of the window frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved window guard for windows which will be removably supported in the outer guide channels for the upper sash, said guard being detachably secured to the lower cross bar of said upper window frame, and provided with means accessible only from the inside of the window for positively locking the window guard in position to the opposite side of the window frame.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved window guard adapted to be removably secured to the bottom cross bar of an upper window frame, and including a frame structure in which a screen is disposed in the upper portion thereof, and an adjustable ventilator is positioned in the lower portion of said frame, together with resiliently projected means extending through the sides of said frame for automatically locking the frame to the window frame when in position therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved window guard for window frames, which will be highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawing to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an upper window sash generally denoted by the reference numeral I and formed with the usual lower cross bar or frame member 2.
The subject matter of the instant invention comprises a substantially rectangular shaped frame 3, which supports the spaced attaching yoke i on its upper surface, the same being adapted to engage and lock to the spaced supporting heads 5 secured on the outer surface of the said lower cross bar 2 of the upper window sash I, said fasteners being of the usual type employed for supporting storm windows or the like.
A cross frame member or bar 6 is formed transversely of the frame 3 to divide the same into an upper and a lower section. A substantially heavy screen i is disposed on the inside of said window frame 3 in the upper portion thereof, and is supported by means of the annular frame 8 disposed about said upper window opening in contact with said screen, and secured by any suitable means to said frame 3. If desired, erforated metal or steel bars may be substituted for the heavy screen 1.
An adjustable ventilator 9 formed with a plurality of overlapping parallel extending louvres Hi is disposed in the lower opening to the frame 3, and is adjustable as to length to fit frames of varying width. As seen from Figure 2 of the drawings, the adjustable ventilator is substan tially U-shaped in cross section, and is formed with a parallel extending upper and lower inwardly directed portions II and I2, respectively, through which the fastening screws 13 are screwed into the adjacent surfaces of the frame 3 for rigidly and permanently supporting said adjustable ventilator in position.
The adjustable ventilator 9 is further locked in position by means of the oppositely disposed locking detents or pins i4 and 15, which are slidably -mounted on the bushings l6 and I1 received in the opposite ends of the apertures l8 formed on the opposite sides of said frame 3. Coil springs I!) are positioned about the looking detents or pins, and are engaged at their outer ends by the heads 20 formed integrally with the said locking detents or pins, to tension the action of said pins to exert a pressure on the same to force them outwardly into engagement with suitable locking apertures (not shown) formed in the opposite sides of the window frame. The inner ends of the said locking detents or pins M and i5 are bent at an angle to form the gripping portions 2|, whereby the same may be readily retracted against the action of the coil springs 19, when it is desired to remove the frame 3 from the traokway in the window frame in which the upper window sash 1 nor- 3 mally slides.
Suitable guard plates 30 having outstanding end and side walls secured in the opposite ends of the lower openings through the frame 3 to receive the handle portions 2! of the locking detents or pins 14 and 45. The guard plates 30 are formed with scoop-like shells 22 on their inner faces. The handle portions 2| of the looking detents extend through a side wall of said guard plates and are positioned within the scooplike shells 22. With this arrangement, the pins are readily accessible only from the inside of the window, thereby preventing a burglar from removing the window guard and gaining access through the window tothe room equipped with the improved window guard.
While the improved window guard has been described as being receivable in. the opposite trackways for the upper. sash, the same may .be secured also by means of additional guard strips, if desired.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that there hasv been provided a highly efiicient form. of window guard for attaching to the outside surface of the. lower cross bar of an upper window frame to prevent unauthorized entrance through the window when the lower sash is raised.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated. and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In combination with a window frame and an upper and lower sash slidably mounted therein, a window guard suspended from said upper sash and adapted to be detachably received in the upper sash guide track in the opposite lower sides of said window frame, said guard including a screen in its upper portion and an adjustable ventilator in its lower portion, oppositely disposed apertures in the side of said ventilator, bushing caps in said apertures, spring projected locking pins slidably mounted in said bushing for locking the guard in fixed position to said window frame, and exteriorly disposed guard caps completely covering said locking pins.
2. In combination with a window frame and an. upper and lower sash slidably mounted therein, a window guard detachably suspended from said upper sash and adapted to be detachably received in vertical alignment with the upper sash in the opposite lower sides of said window frame, said guard including a frame transversely divided into upper and lower sections, a screen secured in said upper section, an adjustable ventilator secured in the lower section, locking sockets formed in the opposite sides of said window frame, spring projected locking pins extending throughopposite sides of the lower section of said guard for locking the same in fixed position to said locking sockets, and guard caps disposed at opposite sides of the lower section exteriorly of said window guard in horizontal alignment with the locking pins.
