Description

J. A. HOLMES.
WINDOW.
No. 171,479, I Patented Dec. 28,1875.

ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. HOLMES, OF OAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l71,479, dated December 28, 1875; application filed May 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. HOLMES, of Oambridgeport. in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachnsets, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Ventilators and Mosquito-Guards, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the peculiar construction of window frames and sashes, and to the application thereto of guards and ventilators, the nature of which will be fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. a
Figure 1 represents a front view of a window frame and parts connected therewith with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line a; w. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Z represents a window-frame, provided with an upper and lower sash.
A is a guard attached to the lower sash B,
and U is a ventilator attached to the upper sash D. E is a chamber in the wall below the window-sill, into which guard A drops through a slot, F, in the sill, and G is a chamber above the window, into which the ventilator 0 slides through a slot, H, in the cap. The stiles l of the lower sash B are formed with extensions 1 for the reception of the guard A, and the stiles l of the upper sash D with extensions 1 for the reception of the ventilator O. The guard A is fitted into grooves i in the extensions 1 and detachably fastened to the bottom rail, so that the sash B may be raised without raising the guard A, if desired. A hook, J, and cranked shaft K are used for connecting them, but other contrivanoes may be employed.
' The ventilator may consist;
the air entering the room into the upper portion before allowing it to descend, so as to diffuse it efficiently, but it may be otherwise constructed, and the guard may be used in connection with it or not.
To the bottom rail B of the sash B a weather guard or protector, 11 is connected, which is recessed on its under side at W, and adapted, when the sash is lowered, to receive and set closely over a rim or projection, b affixed to, and extending across, the window-sill, so as to securely prevent any rain from falling or being driven into, the chamber E.
Having thus described my invention, I would have it understood that I do not claim, broadly, the attachment of a guard to a lower sash, B; nor do I claim, broadly, the attachment of a ventilator, G, to an upper sash ,7 but What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a window-frame, Z, constructed with chambers G E and a rim or projection, b extending across the sill thereof, of a sash, B, provided with exten sions 1, grooves z", guard A, and a weather guard or protector, b and a sash, D, having extensions 1 and a ventilator, G, all constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a window-frame, constructed with a chamber, E, of a sash, B, having extensions 1', guard A, and a weather guard or protector, b constructed and operating substantially as shown and described. JAMES A. HOLMES.
