Application July 10, 1945, Serial No. 604,243
1 1 Claim.
The invention aims to provide a simple, inexpensive and convenient device for holding a skein of yarn or the like while winding it into a ball.
A further object is to provide a novel construction which may be readily disassembled and compactly stored when not needed.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a side elevation, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a disassembled perspective view showing the reel construction.
Fig. 4 is a disassembled perspective view showing the reel stand.
A preferred construction has been shown and will be specifically described, with the under standing, however, that minor variations may be made within the scope of invention as claimed.
The stand structure for supporting the reel is shown more particularly in Fig. 4. This stand includes a central vertically elongated, polysided, head block 5, all vertical sides of which are of uniform width and height, each of said sides being formed with a central vertical groove 5, providing said block with vertical ribs 71 at its vertical corners. Each groove 8 is formed with flat parallel vertical side walls 3 and with a fiat vertical inner wall ii in a plane at right angles to said side walls. The grooves 5 snugly receive the upper ends of inclined legs it, said legs having flat parallel vertical sides i i to contact with the groove side walls 8, and flat vertical upper end surfaces l2 to abut the inner groove walls Openings !3 are drilled horizontally through the ribs '5 and other openings M are formed through the legs it, for alinement when the upper ends of said legs are inserted into the grooves C Pins l5 are provided for insertion into the alined openings 13 and i l to securely hold the legs ill and block 5 in assembled relation. A stand is thus provided, of simple and inexpensive nature which may be readily disassembled when not needed, and may be re-assembled for use with equal ease.
The block 5 is provided with a central upstanding stud lii upon which the reel is mounted. This reel includes two crossed bars ll notched 13 to interfit and formed with openings is to re ceive the stud !6. A cup 2B is secured by a screw 2! upon the stud IE to hold the entire reel against accidental removal, to hold the uppermost of the bars ll against ascent from the low ermost of said bars, and to provide a convenient holder for the ball of yarn or the like, if winding must be temporarily stopped before a skein on the reel is completely wound into a ball.
The end portions of the bars ll are formed with spaced openings 22 into any of which vertical pins 23 may be inserted to hold a skein open 2 as indicated by the broken line 24 in Fig. 2. Collars 25 loosely surround the pins 23 to rest on the yarn and keep it from climbing on said pins, and these pins have heads 25 which prevent the collars from being thrown off should they be thrown excessively upward during the winding operation.
The reel, like the stand, may be readily disassembled when desired, and may be reassembled for use with equal ease. Thus, the entire device may be stored in small space when not needed and may be conveniently assembled for use when required. The entire device (except screw 2|) may well be formed from wood, yet will be strong durable, and of light weight.
I claim: I
In a skein holder, a support having a flat top with a cylindrical wood stud upstanding therefrom, said stud having a flat top, a knock-down skein-supporting reel consisting of two fiat, crossed, interfitting bars having central alined openings to loosely receive said stud when said reel rests upon the flat top of said support with said stud projecting above the top of said bars, a yarn-ball supporting cup having a flat, cene trally-apertured bottom to contact with the projecting fiat top of said stud, a headed screw extending through the aperture in said cup and threaded into the top of said stud, said reel including removable, yarn-holdingpins carried by the outer portions of said bars and projecting upwardly therefrom, said pins having fixed heads on their upper ends, and flat circular collars loosely slidable on said pins between said bars and said heads, said collars being adapted to rest on the skein as it is unwound from the reel, said heads preventing said collars from being thrown off of said pins.
EDITH L. NELL.
