COMBINATION RECEPTACLE AND HOLDER Filed June 4, 1947 ZNVE'NTOR 5/4/1/70 L. (Til/62M .ATTORN Y Patented Mar. 13, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- I COMBINATION RECEPTACLE AND HOLDER San'to L. Cern'ig'lia, Chicago, 'Ill.
Application-June :4, 1947, Serial'No.'752,4'38
2 Claims. (Cl- 312.207f) The invention relates to improvements in a combination receptacle and holder, and more particularly to a wall fixture having a rotatable holder for toothbrushes or like implements, and a protective cover including a receptacle :to receive a tumbler.
An object of the present invention is to .provide an article of the character referred to which may. be fabricated inexpensively, as by molding or from sheet material such as, for example, plastics. V
. .Another object of the invention is to provide a single fixture including a rotatable holder and a stationary receptacle'arranged 'to serve as a protective covering for the holder, all as an integral unit.
.Another object is to provide a sanitary holder for toothbrushes which :may be manipulated easily so as to permit ready insertion or removal of any selected brush without removal of the protective cover normally enclosing the bristle portion of said brushes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a durable, inexpensive and very practical fixture embodying novel features of construction, and one which may be disassembled easily and quickly for cleaning.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same principle may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art, without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the combination receptacle and holder embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an inverted p ane view of the combination receptacle and holder.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional detail view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a bracket adapted to be secured to a support for detachably receiving the combination receptacle and holder.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view taken on line 7 5-5 of Fig. 4.
includes a top wall I2 and a depending peripheral 2 wall I3. The top wall I2 has the circular area surrounding its axis depressed, as best shown in Fig. 3, to define a tumbler receptacle including a bottom wall I4 and a circular wall I5. .The bottom wall I4 of the tumbler receptacle is located in a plane spaced above the plane of the free'lower edge of the outer circular wall I3, and is provided with an axial trunnion I5 integ-ral with and depending from its bottom face; It will be observed that the outer circular wall I3 and the inner circular wall 15 define an inverted channel ll of a :depth substantially equal to the over-all height of the housing I I. This channel is adapted to house the bristle portions of a plurality of toothbrushes I8, or the like, when the latter are suspended therein in a manner to be described presently. I
The :means for suspending the toothbrushes I8 within the circular inverted channel I1 pref-.-. erably consists of a disc I9, suitably journaled. on the trunnion I 6, and held thereon as by means of a Washer 2| and cotter pin 22, so as to be readily removable should the occasion warrant such removal. The peripheral margin of the disc I9 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced radial notches or recesses 23 opening onto the peripheral edge of the disc. Each recess 23 is of such width as to properly receive the handle portion of a toothbrush whereby said toothbrush is suspended by said disc with its bristle portion or enlarged head overlying the top marginal area of the disc adjacent the notched recess through which the handle extends.
The brushes may be readily inserted and withdrawn from the channel I I through a rectangular opening 24 provided in the outer circular wall I 3. Upon referring to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the opening 24 communicates with the free edge of the circular wall I3. Consequently, a brush I8 may be engaged with any one of the notched recesses 23 positioned in register therewith by the simple expedient of first inserting the bristle portion or head of the toothbrush through the opening 24 and into the channel I! and then swinging the handle portion of said brush downwardly through an arc into a substantially vertical position within the recess 23.
Toothbrushes or the like suspended from the disc I9 are adequately protected from dirt and foreign matter and are nevertheless made quickly available for use, it being a simple matter to select the desired toothbrush by engaging the handle thereof, extending below the housing II, and carrying said brush and the disc upon which.
it is mounted into register with the opening 24, whereupon it may be withdrawn through said opening.
The housing I I may be carried on any suitable support and in the present disclosure it is adapted to be removably secured to such a support. Accordingly it is provided with a dovetailed projection 25 adapted to cooperate with a dovetailed recess 26 in a fiat plate-like bracket 21, which may be firmly secured to a wall or other support as by means of screws 28.
The assembly described herein may be readily fabricated from sheet stock, in which event the various walls thereof are initially stamped and subsequently joined together, as by fusing or by means of any suitable adhesive, into a unitary structure. If desired, the housing H may be suitably molded so as to provide a one-piece structure. Thus it will be observed that the article of the present invention may be fabricated from clear or translucent material and construct ed easily and quickly at low cost. 1
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described in detail herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it should be understood that the invention is capable of embodying a variety of modifications in detail structure without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A fixture of the character described, comprising a circular top wall, a peripheral wall de-' pending from the top wall, a central depression in said top wall, said depression including a bottom wall spaced above the bottom edge of the peripheral wall and a surrounding wall uniformly spaced from said peripheral wall to define an inverted channel between the peripheral and surrounding walls, a disc disposed in the plane of and rotatably mounted on the bottom face of said bottom wall, said disc having a diameter smaller than the inside diameter of said peripheral wall, and means in said disc to support a' plurality of headed instruments in position with their heads extended into the inverted channel, said implements being engageable with said disc through an opening in said peripheral wall.
2. A fixture of the character described, comprising a circular top wall, a peripheral wall depending from the top wall, a central depression in said top wall, said depression including a bottom wall spaced above the bottom edge of the peripheral wall and a surrounding wall uniformly spaced from said peripheral wall to define an inverted channel between the peripheral and surrounding walls, a disc disposed in the plane of and rotatably mounted on the bottom face of said bottom wall, said disc having a diameter smaller than the inside diameter of said peripheral wall, means in said disc to "support a plurality of headed instruments in position with their heads extended into the inverted channel, said implements being engageable with said disc through an opening in said peripheral wall, and a substantially rectangular projection on the outside face of the peripheral wall, said projection having bevelled side and bottom edges and being adapted to co-act with a mounting bracket.
