Mme/var HARRY Hokowrrz Patented Mar. 6, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PENCIL SHARPENER Harry Horowitz, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application May 20, 1947, Serial No. 749,125
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencil Sharpeners.
More particularly, the invention proposes a small pencil sharpener provided with a small drawer for shavings which is of novel construction.
More specifically, the new and improved pencil sharpener is so constructed that it may be formed. from four simple thermo-plastic parts. These parts comprise a casing, a cap for one end of the casing, a drawer, and a tubular sharpener member with a steel blade.
It is proposed to so construct the casing that it has an open end so that the dies for forming it can separate. It is proposed that the casing have a horizontal tubular-like top portion and a box-like bottom portion. It is proposed to provide a cap which may be mounted on the open end of said tubular-like top portion. It is proposed that the tubular sharpener member be rotatively mounted between the cap and the closed end of the horizontal tubular-like top portion of the casing. It is proposed to so construct and arrange the drawer that it may slidably engage in the box-like bottom portion of the casing, and when in position closes the open end of the box-like bottom portion.
It is proposed to construct the tubular sharpener member with the blade so that it has an integral handle by which it may be readily turned.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a pencil sharpener as described which is simple and durable and which may be manu factured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure- Fig. l is a side elevational view of a pencil sharpener constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the sharpener shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the sharpener shown in Fig. 1, with certain parts shown in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the tubular sharpener member with the blade, illustrated per se.
Fig. 6 is a plan of the casing of the pencil sharpener, illustrated per se.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 'I-'| of Fig. 3.
The new and improved pencil sharpener, in accordance with this invention, includes a casing II] open atone end II and having a horizontal tubular-like top portion I2 and a box-like bottom portion I3. The closed end of the tubular-like top portion I2 is formed with a bulged portion I I which has an opening I5 surrounded by an inturned flange IS. A cap IT is mounted upon the open end of the tubular-like top portion I2. The adjacent edge portions of the cap I1 and tubular-like top portion I2 are formed with recesses I9 which inter-engage each other and by which the cap I1 is securely mounted in position on the casing. The cap I! is also provided with an opening 2|] horizontally aligned with the opening I5, and provided with a surrounding inturned flange 2 I. The flanges l6 and 2| form bearings for a tubular sharpener member 22.
The tubular sharpener member 22 extends axially through the tubular-like top portion I2. It is provided with flanges 23 and 24 engaging against the inner edges of the flanges I6 and 2I for holding the tubular sharpener member 22 from shifting laterally. The tubular sharpener member 22 is rotatively mounted through the openings I5 and 20. One end of the tubular sharpener member 22 is provided with an integral handle 25 by which it may be rotated. This handle 25 is small so that the cap Il may he slipped over it and engaged in position upon the tubular sharpener member 22 and casing Ill.
The tubular sharpener member 22 has the end remote from the handle 25 formed with a cylindrical opening 26 terminating in an internal conical portion 21. The member 22 is formed with sloping portions 28 and 29 in the vicinity of the conical portion 21, and is also formed with a lateral projection 30 formed with a recess 52 for accommodating a steel blade 3|. The blade 3| is held in position by a bolt 32 which engages through the blade 3| and through the sharpener member 22. The bolt 32 is provided with a nut 33 which engages in a recess 34 formed in the bottom'of the offset portion 30. The blade 3| extends along one side of the conical portion 21 and into a slot-like opening 53 and is adopted to sharpen a pencil engaged therein.
The box-like bottom portion I3 has a bottom wall 35, side walls 36, and a back wall 31. The side walls 36 are inclined upwardly and inwardly and connect with the sides of a bottom opening formed in the tubular-like top portion I2. Side flanges 38 project from the bottom edge portions 3 of the side Walls 36. The flanges 38 have notches 39 for fastening elements 30 by which the pencil sharpener may be attached to a support ll.
A drawer 42 is slidably engaged in the box-like bottom portion [3 and is removable from its front open end. This drawer 42 has a front wall 43 extending completely across the box-like bottom portion [3. The drawer 42 is also provided with a bottom wall 45, side walls 36 and a back wall 47. The bottom wall 45 of the drawer 42 has a downwardly projecting tongue-like portion 48 which engages in a complementary opening 49 formed in the bottom wall 35 of the box-like bottom portion [3. When the drawer 42 is removed from the bottom portion l3, the blade 3| may be reached for cleaning or for replacement of the blade 3|, or the slot-like opening 53 may be cleaned. The front wall 43 is also provided with a centralvertical projection 50 which forms a handle by which the drawer 42 may be easily gripped and moved. The front wall 43 has inclined sides 44 which align with the faces of the side walls 39 of the box-like portion [3.
The operation and use of the pencil sharpener may be understood from the following:
The pencil sharpener is assembled by engaging the tubular sharpener member 22 in position through the tubular-like top portion I2 of the casing Iii, then slipping the cap I? over the handle 25 and applying cement upon the recessed portions I9 of the cap I! and tubular-like top portion I2. In this way the cap I! is attached in position. Now the pencil sharpened may be used by merely engaging a pencil into the opening 26 and turning the handle 25. The shavings will fall into the drawer 52 which may be removed and emptied by merely pulling it forwards. The blade 3| may be reached for cleaning or replacement through the opening 49 when the drawer G2 is removed from the bottom portion 13, and the slot-like opening 53 may also be reached and cleaned.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the 4 right is reserved to all changes and. modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim a new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In a pencil sharpener of the class described, a casing having a horizontal tubular-like top portion communicating with a box-like bottom portion, said box-like bottom portion having a bottom wall, a back wall and side walls sloping downwards and outwards from the sides of said tubular-like top portion, a drawer slidably engaged in said box-like bottom portion and removable from its open end and having side walls extending downwards from the top portions of said sloping side walls, said drawer also having a front wall extending outwards of the side walls of said drawer and said front wall having inclined sides which align with the faces of said side walls of said box-like portion in order to close the spaces between the side walls of said drawer and said box-like bottom portion, and said drawer having a tongue-like portion projecting from its bottom and engaging in a complementary opening in said bottom wall in order to guide said drawer when moved outwards of said casing.
