ERASTUS WOODWARD, OF SOMERVILLE, MASS., ASSIGNOR TO THE COPE- LAND 'PACKING AND LASTING COMPANY, OF PATERSON, N. J.
TACKlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,421, dated February 28, 1882. Application led January 7, 1882. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EaAsTUs WooDwARD, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in 'Packing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in exro plaining its nature, in Whichr Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line xx of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line y yof i5 Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a view, part in plan and part in section, of the nozzle and swinging foot attached thereto. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation, more clearlyrepresentin g the construction of the invention. zo Thisinvention is an improvement upon those described in my Letters Parent Nos. 246,437 and 248,544, and in my pending application, tiled November 16,188l,al1 relating to lasting and fastening machines. In said patents there were described various means for operating what is called the start-and-stop-motion mechanism, and my invention relates to animprovement upon the devices lor-operating the startand-stop-motion mechanism ot said inventions 3o or either the start or stop motion mechanism. Instead of actuating the start-and-stop-motion mechanism by an arm situated or located to be operated by the jack or work in the act of placing the work in position to receive the fastening, as is described in said Letters Patent No. 246,437. or by the nozzle, as is described in said Letters` Patent No. 248,544, or by an independent treadle, as is described in said pending application, I use a foot or arm 4o located close to the nozzle of the machine and adapted to he moved by a slight horizontal movement of the work alter it has been moved vertically to place it in position under the nozzle for receiving the fastening. This foot or arm is connected bymechanism,as hereinafter deseribed, with thestart-and-stop-motion mechanism described in said patents.
In the drawings, A is the nozzle of the machine. 5o B is the foot or arm. It is pivoted at b to the rear of the nozzle in such a manner that its under portion maybe swungin a horizontal direction backwardly from the end of the nozzle. It preferably is provided with teeth or serrations b upon its under surface, which may project slightly below the lower end of the nozzle. Projecting backwardly from the foot is the bell-crank or bent lever b2., the bent end b3 of which projects under the arm c, which extends horizontally from the sliding plate G.
The sliding plate and remainder of the mechanism have already been described in said patents, and need not be described again here.
In operation the work is lifted to the nozzle, as described in said patents, and to operate the machine it is then turned or swung on the nozzle as a pivot in a horizontal direction sufficiently to move the lower part of the foot inwardlybthereby lcausing it to lift the lever b2 and theslide-har C and actuating the start or start-and-stop motion mechanism.
Ot' course the foot may be pivoted to any other portion of the machine instead of to the nozzle without departing from the spirit of my invention; and of course the foot may be arranged to slide-in a horizontal direction instead of to swing upon the arc of a circle, in which case, however, the mechanism for connecting it with the slide-bar would be somewhat C''erent, for in lieu of the lever b2 an arm having an inclined surface or wedge arranged to be brought in contact with the slidebar C or an arm projecting therefrom, or mechanism of a like character, would need to be employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United Statesln atacking-machine, the combination of the start or start-and-stop motion mechanism with a foot, B, arranged in proximity to the nozzle, and having a horizontal, or substantially horizontahmovement in relation thereto, and connecting mechanism, substantially as specified, whereby upon the horizontal or swinging movement of the work in relation to the nozzle the machine is actuated, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
-ERASTUS WOODWARD.
