Application September 13, 1949, `Serial No. 115,503
This invention relates to a sharpening tool, and more particularly'toatool for sharpening scissors.
This invention is an improvementfover our scissors sharpener, Patent No. 2,321,956.
The object of the invention is to provide a Sharpener whereby scissors can be readily sharpened to produce a sharp cutting edge thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a scissors Sharpener which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the scissors Sharpener according to the present invention, and with parts broken away and in section;
Figure 2 is a top plan Niew of the scissors Sharpener;
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the scissors Sharpener;
Figure '7 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the le mounted in the frame.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral Il] designates a frame which includes a bottom wall II and a top wall I2 that is arranged in spaced parallel relation above the bottom Wall. Projecting from the top Wall I2 and secured thereto is a handle I3 which is adapted to be gripped in the users hand when the tool is being used.
Projecting upwardly from the bottom wall II is a plurality of spaced parallel pins I4 which define a guideway for a sharpening le I5, the iile I5 being slidably mounted between the pins I4. Extending between the bottom wall II and the top wall I2 is a body member L6, the body member I B being arranged at an angle of approximately 14 with respect to the bottom wall il. The lower end of the body member I 6 is secured to the bottom wall I I, as by welding, and the body member I6 is provided with a cut-out il for the projection therethrough of the le I5.
The le I5 can be moved so as tovinsure that the scissors blade being sharpened is constantly exposed to a sharp portion of the file. For maintion, a spring member I8 is secured to the body member I6 by means of rivets or the like I9. The vspring member i8 is .provided with a curved portion which frictionally engages the upper surface of the le I5. Extending between the bottom wall II and the top wall I2 is apair of spaced parallel side Walls I9 and 20. The side walls I9 and 20 are provided with tongues 2I which seat in grooves 22 in the top and bottom Walls of the frame IIJ.
Positioned between the side walls I9 and 20 is a support member 23, there being a pin 24 pivotally connecting the support member 23 to the side walls I9 and 20. The support member 23 coacts with the body member i6 to define a space 25 therebetween for receiving the scissors blade 26 to be sharpened.
For normally urging the support member 23 towards the body member I a coil spring 30 is provided. The coil spring 30 has one of its ends circumposed about a short bolt 21 which proiects from a head 28 that is secured to the bottom wall II. The other end of the coil spring 30 ernbraces a stud bolt 29 that is secured to the body member Y23. The coil spring 30 insures that the proper amount of pressure will be applied to the scissors blade 26.
Fromy the foregoing, it is apparent that a tool has been provided which is especially suitable for sharpening scissors and the like, Thus, the user grips the handle I3 and the scissors blade to be sharpened is positioned in the space 25 and moved back and forth across the le I5, whereby a fine cutting edge will be produced.
We claim:
V1. A scissors Sharpener comprising a frame, said frame including a bottom wall and a top wall arranged in spaced parallel relation above said bottom wall, a handle projecting from said top wall and secured thereto, a plurality of spaced parallel pins projecting from said bottom wall and dening a guideway, a le slidably arranged in said guideway, a body member arranged at an obtuse angle with respect to said bottom wall and extending between said bottom wall and top wall, the lower end of said body member being secured to said bottom wall, there being a cutout in said body member for the projection therethrough of said le, a pair of side walls extending between said top and bottom walls and arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, tongue and groove means connecting said side Walls to saidtop and bottom walls, a support member pivotally connected to said side walls and coacting with said body member to dene a space therebetween for receiving therein the scissors blade to be sharpened, resilient means for normally urging said support member toward said body member, and a spring member projecting from said body member and having a curved portion arranged in engagement with said file for maintaining the latter immobile.
2. A scissors sharpener comprising a frame, said frame including a bottom wall and a top wall arranged in spaced parallel relation above said bottom wall, a handle projecting from said top wall and secured thereto, a plurality of spaced parallel pins projecting from said bottom wall and defining a guideway, a file slidably arranged in said guideway, a body member arranged at an obtuse angle with respect to said bottom wall and extending between said bottom wall and top wall, the lower end of said body member being secured to said bottom wall, there being a cutout in said body member for the projection therethroughnf said le, a pair of si-de Walls extending between said top and bottom walls and arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, tongue and groove means connecting said side walls to said top and bottom walls, a support member pivotally connected to said side walls and coacting with said body member to dene a space therebetween for receiving therein the scissors blade to be sharpened, resilient means for normally urging said support member toward said body member,- and a spring member projecting from said body member and having a curved portion arranged i'n engagement with said le for maintaining the latter immobile, said resilient means comprising a coil spring having one end operativelyvconnected to said bottom wall and its other end connected to said body member.
