\ 9 claims. (c1. zoe-1') My invention relates to cartons made of sheet material, such as paper or cardboard, the carbon being formed from blanks of the sheet material provided with creases or score lines at which the blanks are folded to shape the cartons.

An object. of my invention is to provide means whereby a foldable carton can be outlined or otherwise indicated on a sheet of paper or cardboard of any shape or size, and be easily removed from the sheet, folded and formed into a carton adapted to carry dresses, suits, coats or other merchandise without the necessity of tying a string around the carton, or sealing it with gummed tape or otherwise fastening it to keep it from coming open.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a carton with an integral handle so the carton can be easily carried without the necessity of attaching a separate handle and without the cost of time and labor necessary to apply carrying means of any kind.

AnotherF object of my invention is to provide such a carton with a reinforced bottom so the carton will not bulge downward from the weight of its contents.

Another object of my invention is to provide a hanger integral with the body of the carton so that wearing apparel may be suspended therefrom to avoid becoming mussed while being carried.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a carton with such a hanger without the necessity of -stapling the hanger to the body of the carton or stapling the flanges of the carton walls to hold the carton intact.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a carton with adjustable wings to iit over the contents of the carton to keep them from shaking around and becoming wrinkled while being carried.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a carton with such a'hanger but in such a way that if the merchandise to be packed does not require a hanger, the entire hanger means may be easily and simply removed to make more room for other merchandise.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a carton with two different handles parallel with each other, one protruding from each extremity of the carton so that the weight of said carton is distributed over both handles.

Another object of my invention is to provide a third handle parallel with the other two, to support the merchandise on the hanger independently of the load carried by the other two handles.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a carton by means permitting its use and reuse as a traveling case in addition to its use as a container for packing merchandise purchased in retail stores, thereby giving long life to the advertising value of the store name printed thereon.

A further object of my invention is to provide a carton having the aforementioned` features and so designed that it may be shipped in flat condition and subsequently be set up and utilized by unskilled labor at low cost.

A still further object of my invention is to provide such a carton of paper, cardboard, fiberboard or other material that may be shipped in straightline blanks in which the form of the carton has been indicated by perforations, thereby making shipping simple and inexpensive, and yet have the carton form easily removed from the straight-line sheets with little waste of the sheet material in which the carton form is outlined.

A still further object of my invention is to provide in such a sheet of blank material, in the spaces that would otherwise be wastev stock, extra hangers for carryi garments having neck openings and shoulders, also other types of hangers having shoulder strap guards and skirt loops particularly designed for carrying womens slips, skirts and other apparel, all of such hangers having integral handles that may be projected through a slot in a wall of the carton to a plane outside thereof parallel with the handles that are integral with the walls of the carton so that the hand of the person carrying the box em-4 braces all the handles at the same time.

Still another object of my invention is to provide also out of otherwise waste portions of the sheet of material. means for holding all the handles together outside the box when it is not being carried, such means forming at the same time a covering or protection to the hand against the sharp edges of the handles when the box is being carried. The means for accomplishing this is the provision for a loop having a wing at one end and a slot at the other whereby the loop can be slipped through all the handles, the wings into the slot and the loop thereby locked to form a barrier against any of the handles slipping to the inside of the carton. y

The above mentioned objects, as well as various others, will become apparent from the following description, considered together with the accompanying drawings, thelatter of which illustrate exemplary forms of my invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet of material indicated by dots and dashes, with one i'orrn of my invention outlined thereon in solid lines and the scorings indicated by broken lines.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the top' portion of the carton outlined in Figure l, Ibut with the hanger folded down into the body of the carton.

Figure 9 is a perspective view of one type of extra hanger particularly designed from women's slips, skirts, etc.

Figure 10 is an enlarged plan view of the locking portion of the wings shown in Figures 1 and 6.

Figure 11 is an enlarged plan view of the locking portion of the carrying loop P shown in Figure 1.

In the drawings, the side walls of the carton are designated by the letters A, B, C, D; the bottom walls by the letters E and G; the top wall by the letter F; the end walls by the letters J, K, L, M; the integral hanger by the letter H; extra hangers by the letters HI, H2; and the carrying loop by the letter P.

Referring now in more detail to the hanger shown in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5, H denotes the hanger in its entirety, 28 the upper extremity forming the handle integral with handle I4 of wall A at the score line 28, the handle 28 containing the hand-hold slot 30. On either side of handle 28 along arc 3I are shoulder forms 33 having tabs 32 cooperative with slots 38 after being folded along

34 and 35 to form sloping suspensions for the shoulders of garments to be carried in the carton. Below said slots 36 is an elongated carrying portion comprising a slit 31 through the material and a scoring 39 whereby the intervening portion 40 may be folded downwardly along the scoring 39 below the arcuate ends to form supporting means for garments that are not adapted to llt over the shoulder forms 33 of hanger H.

In Figure 9 is shown one form of non-integral hanger, having a handle I6 with a hand-hold slot 15, shoulder strap guards 1l and skirt loops 18.

In Figure l0 are shown in detail the extremities 8l and 82 of wings I0 and II, whereby they are interlocked after being folded over, the arcuate tab 83 formed by slit 84 cooperating with slit 86 adjoining tab 85 to hold said wings I0 and II together.

In Figure 11 are shown in detail the extremities 9| and 52 of carrying-loop P, the slits 93 and 94 being adapted to receive the tab 95 and lock the ends of said loop together.

From what has been disclosed, it should be apparent to anyone, even though he is not skilled in the art, that my invention includes a sheet of material I, on which has been outlined a foldable carton comprising a garment hanger H integrally suspended from a handle 28, said handle being integral with the body of said carton, a garment-supporting member 39 integrally suspended below the shoulders 34-35 of said hanger, an integral top portion A having foldable flanges 5, 6 and l, adapted to fold downwardly to form reinforcements to said topportion A, one of said flanges 5 being cut in the center to form a double handle I4 and 28 for carrying said carton, the flange E on the opposite side of said top portion

54 and 55 thereof and longitudinal therewith, said slots being adapted to permit handles integral with said top portion A to protrude from the inside to the outside of said carton. said carton also having intermediate portions C and G. also having an end portion D provided with an integral tab 63 at the center of the farthermost edge thereof, said tab having a slot 64 therein and also being adapted to form a handle parallel with said first and second mentioned handles I4 and 28, providing a multiple handle for carrying said carton without the necessity of tying a string around said carton or afiixing any other carrying means thereto.

Endless variations and modifications in sizes and shapes of my invention may be made to meet various needs, and I herein claim all such variations and modifications insofar as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my claims, although I show only one example to disclose my invention.

I claim;

1. A carton formed from a single piece of materlal comprising an elongated top wall; a first and second side wall hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall and disposed in transverse alignment therewith; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls hingedly connected to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; said third side wall having hingedly attached end flanges and being folded onto the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith to provide a compartment by the end flanges; said end flanges forming end walls for 'the compartment and extending laterally from the third side wall for engagement on the first side wall; locking means hingedly attached to ,the opposing end edges of the first side wall and proiecting outwardly therefrom in opposing directions: said locking means embracing the superposed third side wall and locking` it in the compartment forming position on the first side wall; said second side wall being folded over about the top wall and superimposed on the locking means with the second bottom wall connecting the second and fourth side walls being superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall and the fourth side wall being superimposed on the third sidewall; and means proiecting outwardly from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall insertable in the opposing end openings formed by the superimposed second side wall for locking the walls together in carton formation.

2. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; first and second side Walls hingedly connected at one of their side edges'to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges oi' the top wall; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the iirst and second side Walls; reinforcing third and and fourth side walls hingedly connected to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; elongated flanges transversely disposed at and hinged to the end edges of the third 4side Wall; said third side wall being folded onto the inner face of the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith by the fianges extended inwardly laterally from the third side wall and engaged on the first side wall; thereby providing an article receiving compartment; cooperative locking means hingedly attached to the opposing ends of the first side wall and'projecting outwardly therefrom in opposing directions; said locking means being folded over and embracing the superposed third side wall and locking it in the compartment forming position on the rst side wall; said second side wall being folded onto and superimposed on the locking means embracing the superposed third side wall wtih the second bottom wall connecting the second and fourth side walls being superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; the fourth side wall being superimposed on the first side wall; and flaps projecting outwardly in opposing directions from the opposing end edges of the fourth side wall and being hingedly attached thereto; said flaps being insertable in the end openings created by the superimposed second side wall.

3. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; first and second side walls hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the first and second side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls hingedly connected to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; elongated flanges transversely disposed at and hinged to the end edges of the third side Wall; said third side wall being folded onto the inner face of the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith by the flanges extended inwardly laterally from the third side wall and engaged on the first side wall; thereby providing an article receiving compartment; wings transversely disposed at the opposing end edges of the first side v wall and hingedly connected thereto; said Wings having cooperative locking means formed on their outer ends and being folded over the superposed third side wall in an embracing manner and the locking means securing the wings together to lock the third side wall in the compartment forming position on the first side wall; said second side wall being folded onto and superimposed on the locked wings embracing the superposed third side wall with the second bottom Wall connecting the second and fourth side walls being superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; the fourth side wall being superimposed on the first side wall; and flaps projecting outwardly in opposing directions lfrom the opposing end edges of the fourth side wall and being hingedly attached thereto; said flaps being insertable in the end openings created by the superimposed second side wall.

4. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; first and second rectangular side walls hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall; elongated `first and second bottom walls of a dimension similar to the top wall hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the first and second side Walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls of a dimension similar to the first andv second side walls hingedly connected to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second body walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; laterally disposed inwardly directed flanges formed transversely on the opposing ends of the third side wall; said third side wall being folded onto the inner surface of the first side wall and spaced out of contact therewith to provide a compartment by the end flanges engaged on the first side wall; said flanges forming end walls for the compartment and end walls hingedly connected to the opposing ends of the first side wall and superimposed on the outer surfaces of the flanges; wings formed on the outer edges of the end walls and hingedly connected thereto; said wings being folded onto the third side wall and embracing said side wall; cooperative locking means formed on the outer ends of the Wings and locking said wings on the side wall; a slot formed longitudinally between the top wall and the second side wall; a handle tab formed on the outer side edge of the third side wall insertable through said slot; said second side wall being superimposed on the locked wings with the second bottom wall superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; said fourth side wall being superimposed on the first side wall; fiaps hingedly connected to and projecting outwardlyr from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall; said flaps being insertable under the end edges of the second side wall and superimposed on the locked wings; and a handle forming tab formed on the outer end edge of the fourth side wall and aligned with the handle forming tab inserted through the slot at the side edge of the top wall.

5. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; first and second rectangular side walls hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall; elongated flrst and second bottom walls of a dimension similar to the top wall hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the first and second side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls of a dimension similar to the first and second side walls hingedly connected to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom Walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; flanges formed on the opposing ends of the third side wall and hingedly connected thereto; means formed on the outer side edge of the third side wall and locking said flanges in laterally disposed inwardly directed positions on said third side wall; said third side wall being folded onto the inner surface of the first side wall and spaced out of contact therewith to provide a compartment by the end flanges engaged on the first side wall; said flanges forming end walls for the compartment and end Walls hingedly connected to the opposing ends of the first side wall and superimposed on the outer surface of the flanges; wings formed on the outer edges of the end walls and hingedly connected thereto; said Wings being folded onto the third side wall and embracing said side wall; cooperative locking means formed on the outer ends of the wings and locking said wings on the side wall; a, slot formed longitudinally between the top wall and the second side wall; a handle tab formed on the outer side edge of the third side wall insertable through said slot; said second side wall being superimposed on the locked wings with the second bottom wall superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; said fourth side wall being superimposed on the first side wall; flaps hingedly connected to and projecting outwax-diy from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall; said aps being insertable under the end edges of the second side wall and superimposed on the locked wings; and a handle forming tab formed on the outer end edge of the fourth side wall and aligned with the handle forming tab inserted through the slot at the side edge of the top wall.

6. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; a first and second side wall hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the first and second side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls hingedly attached to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; flanges transversely disposed at the opposing ends of the third side Wall and hingedly connected thereto; means for locking said fianges laterally of the side wall; said third side wall being folded onto the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith by the end flanges engaged on the first side wall to thereby provide a compartment; cooperative locking wings hingedly attached at their inner ends to the opposing end edges of the first side wall; said locking wings being folded onto the third side wall and embracing said side wall to lock the side wall in the compartment forming position; said second side wall being folded onto the locking wings and superposed on the third side wall with the second bottom wall superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; the fourth side wall being superimposed on the first side wall; triangular shaped flaps hingedly projecting from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall and insertable in the opening created by the end edges of the second side wall; said flaps being interposed between the second side wall and the locked wings.

A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; a first and second side wall hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the first and second side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls hingedly attached to the opposing marginal edges of the rst and second bottom walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; fianges transversely disposed at the opposing ends of the third side wall and hingedly connected thereto; means for locking said flanges laterally of the side wall; said third side wall being folded onto the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith by the end flanges engaged on the first side wall to thereby provide a compartment; cooperative locking Wings hingedly attached at their inner ends to the opposing end edges of the first side wall; said locking wings being folded onto the third side wall and embracing said side Wall to lock the side wall in the compartment forming position; said second side wall being folded onto the locking Wings and superposed on the third side wall with the second bottom wall superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; the fourth side wall being superimposed on the first side wall; triangular shaped fiaps hingedly projecting from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall and insertable in the opening created by the end edges of the second side wall: said flaps being interposed between the second side wall and the locked wings; and means formed on the outer side edges of the third and fourth side walls forming handles disposed in transverse alignment when the walls are brought into folded relation.

8. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; a rst and second side wall hingedly connected at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal marginal edges of the top wall and disposed in transverse alignment therewith; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls hingedly connected to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom walls; all of said Walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; said third side wall having hingedly attached end anges and being folded onto the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith to provide a compartment by the end flanges; said end flanges forming end walls for the compartment and extending laterally from the third side wall for engagement on the first side wall; locking means hingedly attached to the opposing end edges of the first side wall and projecting outwardly therefrom in opposing directions; said locking means embracing the superposed third side wall and locking it in the compartment forming position on the first side wall; said second side wall being folded over about the top wall and superimposed on the locking means with the second bottom wall connecting the second and fourth side walls being superimposed on and reinforcing the rst bottom wall and the fourth side wall being superimposed on the third side wall; means projecting outwardly from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall insertable in the opposing end openings formed by the superimposed second side wall for locking the walls together in carton formation; and hanger means formed on the third side wall adjacent to the outer side edge thereof for supporting a garment within the compartment. v

9. A carton formed from a single piece of material comprising an elongated top wall; a first and second side wall hingedly connected 'at one of their side edges to the opposing longitudinal n marginal edges of the top wall; elongated first and second bottom walls hingedly connected at l0 one of their longitudinal marginal edges to the opposing side edges of the first and second side walls; reinforcing third and fourth side walls hingedly attached to the opposing marginal edges of the first and second bottom walls; all of said walls being longitudinally co-extensive and disposed in transverse alignment; flanges transversely disposed at the opposing ends of the third side wall and hingedly connected thereto; means for locking said flanges laterally of the side wall; said third side wall being folded onto the first side wall and spaced out of engagement therewith by the end anges engaged on the first side wall to thereby provide a compartment; cooperative locking wings hingedly attached at their inner ends to the opposing end edges of the rst side wall; said locking wings being folded onto the third side wall and embracing said side wall to lock the side wall in the compartment forming position; said second side wall being folded onto the locking wings and superposed on the third side wall with the second bottom wall superimposed on and reinforcing the first bottom wall; the fourth side wall being superimposed on the rst side wall; triangular shaped flaps hingedly projecting from the opposing ends of the fourth side wall and insertable in the opening created by the end edges of the second side wall; said aps being interposed between the second side wall and the locked wings; means formed on the outer side edges of the third and fourth side walls forming handles disposed in transverse alignment when the walls are brought into folded relation; and a garment hanger ap portion formed on the third side wall adjacent to the outer side edge thereof; said portion being adapted to be housed within the compartment for supporting articles therein.
