Our invention relates: to. improvements; in window screen, and the same has: for. its object to. provide a simple, eincient. and inexpensive. roll Screen to be attached to a, window casing or. frame.
Further, said invention has for its. object. provide a screen of the character specified which may be readily attached to. a window casing, or frame withoutnecessitating the alteration of the same.
Further, said invention hasfor itsobject to, pro.- vide a, screen of the character specified which may be attached to. the outer side of a Window casing Orframe without. in any way requiring the modification or alteration of the window casing or frame.
Further, said invention has. for its object. to provide a screen of the character specified in which the. screen, when not. in use. is contained wholly within a housing, and in which thescreen, when Withdrawn from the housing, is guided in and duly retained in. channel members.

Other objects will, in part, be obvious, and, in part, be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends our invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

Eachhead or end member [3 is provided upon its inner side with: a centrally disposed pyramidal bearing or boss. 22- having a square socket therein in which is secured by a screw 23' the end 2-4 of a shaft 25. This shaft serves as a support for the screen reel, and at the same time serves as a tie-rod'tosecure the heads l3 and'inter-mediate portion Hi and associated parts in duly assembled relation.
Upon the shaft 25 is revolubly disposed a hollow roller or reel 26 having annular heads 21 atits opposite ends; and a revoluble head 21 secured within the roller inwardly of its ends by a drive pin 21*.
28 denotes a spring disposed within the roller '26 and surrounding the shaft 25, andhaving one end 29 fixed to said shaft, and its other end 30 fixed in an aperture provided in the inner side of the disk or head 21 whereby the tension of said spring may be varied, as required. Upon said roller 26 is secured the upper end of a screen 3! provided at its lower horizontal edge with a transverse bar 32 formed of a strip of sheet metal folded or doubled upon itself to form front and rear members 33, 33 respectively, intermediate of which is disposed the lower horizontal edge of the screen 3!, and the members 33, 33*, then secured together by spot welds 34 with the screen 3: therebetween. The opposite ends 35 of the bar 32 extends into, and are received by the vertical slots of the channel members 36 secured at the opposite vertical sides of the window casing or frame.
The channel members 36 are of rectangular form in cross-section, and provided at their forward sides with longitudinal flanges 33 having holes 33 therein to receive screws 36 whereby said channel members may be secured to the side members of the window casing or frame ID. The inner vertical edges of said channel members 36 form guides within which the projecting ends of the transverse bar 32, at the lower edge of the screen 3| are adapted to work, and at suitable intervals along the opposite vertical edges of the channel members 36 are registering substantially semi-circular recesses 42, to accommodate the bolts 38 for securing the screen 3| to adjusted positions. Preferably recesses 42 located at the lower ends of the channel members 36, to permit of the locking of the screen in fully lowered position, and about mid-way of the height of the window casing or frame, to permit of the securing of the screen 3| in half-way extended position will be sufiicient for all practical purposes.
The bar 32 is provided in its front and rear members 33, 33 with registering pairs of semicircular horizontal portions 31 jointly forming tubular portions 31* which serve to stiffen or reinforce said bar. The upper of said tubular portions 31 forms at its opposite ends housings for slidable, spring-actuated bolts 38, having finger portions 39 working in bayonet slots 40. The ends of the bolts 38 are adapted to be projected by their actuating springs 4|, into engagement with the recesses 42, provided in the slotted edges of the channel members 36 to hold the screen to its adjusted withdrawn positions. The bolts 38 are held to their retracted positions by the engagement of the finger portions 39 thereof with the angular rear ends of the bayonet slots 40.
The screen 3! is provided at suitable intervals along its opposite vertical edges and within the channel members 36 with double-headed rivets 3!- which serve to retain the screen duly in position, and prevent the vertical edges from being withdrawn from said channel members 35 in the course of the movements of the screen, or when said screen is subjected to any undue strain or pressure at right angles to the normal thereof. 43 denotes a handle secured to the transverse bar 32 intermediate the tubular portions 31 to facilitate the raising and lowering of the screen 3|.
The operation of the device will be obvious from the foregoing description.
It is to be noted particularly that the screen embodying our invention may be readily applied to either the inside or outside of a window frame or casing without necessitating any structural alterations or modifications of the window frame or casing. Further, it is to be noted that the 4 housing within which the rolled screen is disposed, when not in use, together with the operating parts enclosed by said housing are all secured together in operative relation by the shaft 25 and the securing means therefor.
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a roller screen, a housing having a body portion one side of which is vertical and which carries mounting means for mounting said body in the frame of a window, said housing also including a semi-circular portion the center line of which is spaced apart from said vertical side a distance similar to its radius, an end cap on each end of said body, each of said caps having inwardly extending frusto-conical bosses, each with a centralized rectangular socket formed therein, a shaft mounted in said housing and having rectangular end portions extending into said sockets, a tubular roller having annular heads on each end, disc-like members within said tubular roller at each end thereof and secured therein by means of drive pins extending radially through the wall of said roller, said disc-like members having central bearing holes therein journaled on said shaft, said disc-like members each having a second hole therein in spaced parallel relation to its bearing hole, helical spring means embracing said shaft within said roller and having one end secured to said shaft and the other end engaging said second hole in said disc-like member, tapped holes in the ends of the rectangular end portions of said shaft; fiat head screws extending through corresponding countersunk holes in said end caps and engaging said tapped holes for securing said body portion, and said caps, and said shaft, with said roller thereon, together; and a screen having one end secured to said roller.
2. The invention according to claim 1 in which said shaft has a shoulder formed in spaced apart relation from each end thereof, said shoulders being adapted to abut the adjacent faces of said disc-like members and prevent end play of said roller.
3. In a window screen mechanism wherein a screen is rolled upwardly to uncover the window and is rolled downwardly to cover the window with its vertical edges in channels on either side of the window, the combination with the screen of a housing for such screen at the top of the window, said housing having a lower horizontal longitudinal slot therein through which the screen may move therefrom, opposite heads closing the ends of said housing, a centrally disposed bearing extending inwardly of said housing from each of said heads, said bearings having squared sockets in their inner ends, a shaft having ends of square cross section fitted in the square sockets of said bearings and thereby held against rotation, a hollow roller to which the screen end is attached revolubly disposed upon said shaft, said roller having a revoluble head secured therein, and a coil spring disposed within said roller surrounding said shaft, said coil spring being fixed at one end thereof to said shaft and at the other end thereof to said revoluble head, whereby unwinding the screen from said roller is opposed by said coil spring and upon release of the screen said coil spring rewinds the screen upon said roller.
4. In a window screen mechanism wherein a screen is rolled upwardly to uncover the window and is rolled downwardly to cover the window with its vertical edges in channels on either side of the window, the combination with the screen of a housing for such screen at the top of the window, said housing having a lower horizontal longitudinal slot therein through which the screen may move therefrom, separately formed opposite heads closing the ends of said housing and having inwardly extending peripheral flanges surrounding the ends of said housing, a centrally disposed bearing extending inwardly of said housing from each of said heads, said bearings having squared sockets in their inner ends and openings extending therethrough centrally into the squared sockets therein, a shaft having ends of square cross section fitted in the square sockets of said bearings and thereby held against rotation, screws extending through the openings in said heads into the ends of said shaft in the squared sockets therein to hold said heads, said shaft and associated parts in assembled position, a hollow roller to which the screen end is attached revolubly disposed upon said shaft, said roller having a revoluble head secured therein, and a coil spring disposed within said roller surrounding said shaft, said coil spring being fixed at one end thereof to said shaft and at the other end thereof to said revoluble head, whereby unwinding the screen from said roller is opposed by said coil spring and upon release of the screen said coil spring rewinds the screen upon said roller.
