Description

(No Model.)
D. HANNA.
SEDIMENT COLLECTOR FOR BOILERS.
,No. 254307. Patented Feb. 28.18821 V'IL'JVV'IWR IV! [JV/55387138 JUMP/201,154?
UNIT STATES PATENT OF ICE.
DAVID HANNA, OF OGDENSBURG, NEW YORK.
SEDlMENT-COLLECTOR FOR BOILERS.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,307, dated February 28, 1882.
(N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID HANNA, of Ogdensburg, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sediment-Collectors for Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a cross-section of my improved sediment-collector for boilers, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
This invention has relation toimprovements in sediment-collectors for boilers, having for its object to catch or collect sediment precipitated while discharging the feed-water into the steam-space in boilers, which may or can be blown off when desired; and it consists of a funnel or basin having a pipe supplied with a cock and arranged so as to catch the discharge from a'spraying-nozzle or other feeding device discharging into the steam-space, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ in a boiler, A, (its construction being immaterial so far as it relates thereto,) in connection with a feed-pipe or spraying-nozzle, B, of .suitable form, arranged so as to spray or discharge the feed-water into the steam-space of the boiler, a funnel or basin, 0, to catch or collect sediment precipitated from the feed-water by the steam. This avoids the depositing of the sediment of whatever character, whether saline or otherwise, upon the heating-pipes or the 208,479, dated October 1,1875.
bottom or other portion of the boiler, thus keeping it and them free from incrustation, so destructive to boilers. To this funnel or basin is connected a pipe, U, leading out through the boiler, and provided outside of the boiler with a valve or stopcock, b, to enable the blowing off of the collected sediment in the funnel and pipe when necessary.
This invention is exceedingly simple in construction and efiective in operation.
I am aware that prior to my invention spray and nozzle feeders have been used in steamboilers, discharging the feed-water into the steam-space; and I am also aware that boilers have been provided with open feed-water heaters suspended above the Water-line within the boiler, as shown in McOormicks patent, No. I therefore do not claim such means of discharging or heating the feed-water in the boiler as my invention; but
What I do claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Le:ters Patent, is'
The combination of the boiler A, feed-water rose or spraying nozzle B, discharging into the steam-space of the boiler, imperforate funnel O, placed underneath the spraying-nozzle, and blow-oft pipe 0, having valve or cock I), the whole constructed and arranged as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- DAVID HANNA. Witnesses:
