(Cl. 242'97) This invention relates to tools used in reinforced concrete form work where reinforcing is tied together in the forms by wire, and in particular the invention relates to a reel constructed tobe carried on a belt of a worker in which wire maybe drawn from the reel as it is used and in which coils of wire may readily be replaced in the reel.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a wire carrying reel in which coils of tying wire, whichare maintained in position by short binding wires at. spaced intervals there around-may readily be inserted with the binding .wires' in place and in. which the binding wires may readily be removed withthe coil installed" in the reel.
Thisdevice is an improvement over the wire handling device of my prior Patent No. 1,990,135 and also over other devices now in use in that the wire coil is positioned on a conical shaped core with ribs on the core and inner flange of the reel between which the binding wires are positioned, and also in that the outer flange of the reel is independently removable without removing the reel from the housing so that, to replace a coil of wire, it is only necessary to remove the outer flange.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide improvements in wire carrying reels which facilitate inserting new coils of wire in the reel and also facilitate removing binding wires from the coil with the coil in operative position in the reel.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for mounting a wire carrying reel in a housing adapted to be carried on a belt in which the reel is freely rotatable and in which it is not necessary to remove the means for retaining the reel in operative position in the housing when coils of wire are replaced thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved wire carrying reel in which binding wires may readily be removed from coils of wire positioned in the reel, which is of a comparatively simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects in view the invention embodies a substantially hollow cylindrical housing with one side open and with an opening in the peripheral wall, a reel having a removable outer side plate rotatably mounted in the housing and having ribs on wire contacting surfaces thereof, and means for retaining the reel in the housing.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved wire carrying reel of this invention includes a reel having a core [0 with an inner flange l I integral therewith and having an outer removable flange I2, and a housing It having a stud [4 on which the reel is rotatably mounted.
The core ll! of the reel is provided with a conical shaped outer surface having ribs I5 thereon and corresponding radially disposed ribs l6 are provided on the inner face of the inner flange I l of the reel. The outer end of the core In is formed with a shoulder H and a threaded section I8 extends beyond the shoulder on which a hub I 9 of the outer flange I2 is threaded, as shown in Figure 5. The core I0 is provided with a bore 20 having a counterbore 2| at the inner end and the stud extends through the bore with a shoulder 22 at the inner end thereof positioned in the counterbore. By this means the reel is freelyrotatable on the stud of the housing.
The outer end of the stud is provided with a threaded socket 23 in which a screw 24 with a locking washer 25 under the head thereof, is positioned. Withthe outside diameter of the head of the screw less than the diameter of the root of the threads the outer flange 12 may be unscrewed and removed without removing the screw 24. The core and inner flange of the reel may, therefore, remain in position on the stud in the housing while the outer flange I2 is removed and replaced after a new coil of wire has been positioned on the reel.
The outer flange I2 is provided with radially disposed ribs 25 to facilitate installing and re moving the flange.
The housing 13 includes a verticall disposed base plate having a peripheral wall or flange 21 and the flange is provided with an opening 28 extended from the point 29 to the point 30 through which the binding wires 3| may be cut and removed from a coil 32 and also through which wire may be drawn from the coil for use. The edges of the flange 21 at the ends of the opening 28 are provided with reinforcing beads 33 and 34 to increase the wearing surface in order to prevent the wire wearing grooves in the ends of the flange.
The stud M is carried by the base plate of the housing l3 and the rear surface of the base is provided with belt receiving sockets 35 and 36 as shown in Figure 2 through which a belt 31 may be positioned.
With the parts arranged in this manner the reel may be carried on a belt as shown and described and when wire has been exhausted from the reel the outer flange I2 is removed, a new coil of wire placed on the core of the reel as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, and then the outer flange 12 is replaced. The bindings 3| may then be cut one at a time and as the surface of the coil is spaced from the surface of the core and inner flange the binding wires may readily be withdrawn through the opening 28. With the binding wires removed the end of the wire of the coil may be fed through the opening 28 and the wire may readily be withdrawn as it is used for tying reinforcing in concrete form work.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A tying wire reel comprising a substantially hollow cylindrical housing having a circular base plate with a centrally disposed stud having a shoulder spaced from the inner end and a threaded socket in the outer end extended there from and having a cylindrical wall with a wire withdrawing opening therein extended from the peripheral edge of the base plate and surrounding said stud, a reel with a removable outer flange and having a conical shaped core rotatably mounted on said stud, said reel having spaced ribs on inner surfaces thereof and a screw threaded in the said threaded socket in the outer end of the stud and having a head engaging the outer end of the core of the reel for retaining the said reel on the said stud with the outer flange of the reel removable thereover.
