This invention relates to fuel injection apparatus and ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines and more particularly to an ignition timer and fuel injection pump unit which may be readily mounted upon the engine and which has a single drive connection therewith.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined fuel injection pump and ignition timer unit for internal combustion engines.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a unit which is interchangeable on existing engines with the ignition timing apparatus whereby such engines may be readily adapted for utilizing fuel injection to replace the carburetion system of such engines.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved unit which comprises the ignition timing apparatus together with a fuel injection unit which meters, distributes and injects the fuel and which unit may be readily mounted on existing engines in place of the ignition timing and distributing means previously employed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved low cost, fuel injection pump for gasoline, spark ignition engines.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fuel injection unit for use on engines which is applicable to existing engines embodying carburetors with minimum changes and utilizing a single drive connection with which the engine is already provided for both ignition timing and fuel injection.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be understood that many changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the invention as set forth in the accompanying claims, the preferred form having been given by way of illustration only.

The advantages of employing fuel injection systems rather than the conventional carburetor on engines have become so well known that it is not believed necessary to state them all here. The principal advantages of such systems are increased power, greater economy, broader fuel range, that is, the possibility of using cheaper grades of fuel with less tendency for detonation, and increased performance.
It is the principal object of the present invent on to provide means whereby such fuel injection system may be incorporated in existing carburetor type engines with minimum changes and at relatively economical installations by the provision of a new, combined ignition timing means and fuel injection apparatus adapted to be readily mounted upon the engine and be driven by the conventional engine drive already provided for driving the conventional ignition timing apparatus.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the device embodying the invention includes a housing I having an open lower side which is adapted to be closed by the cover member 2 which is secured to the housing I by screws or the like 3 of suitable size and number and said cover 2 is provided with the integral tubular shank 4 adapted to fit within the recess or socket which is provided in conventional gasoline engines for receiving the drive of the ignit on timing apparatus. The shank 4 provides a bearing for the drive shaft 5 which extends through the distributor sleeve 9 in the housing I and through the shank 4 and is connected by gearing, not shown, with a rotatable part of the engine, preferably the valve operating shaft in the convent onal manner.

In a device of the character described, a fuel injection pump, comprisinga bore and double ended plunger adapted to reciprocate in said bore, a shaft, gear means operatlvely connected to said shaft, an eccentric operated by said gear means for reciprocating said plunger in said bore, means for supplying fuel to said bore means surrounding said shaft for distributing fuel pumped by said pumping plunger and fuel passageways from adjacent the opposite ends of said bore to said distributing means.

In a device of the character described, a unit including ignition timing means for a circuit breaker and a fuel injection pump, said unit being adapted to supply ignition and fuel to an internal combustion engine, said fuel injection pump comprising a housing having a bore and a double ended plunger pumping element in said bore, a shaft driven by the engine for operating said circuit breaker and fuel injection pump, a distributor sleeve on said shaft and rotatable upon rotation of said shaft, a fuel passageway from said pump to said distributing sleeve, said distributing sleeve surrounding said shaft and having distributing means thereon and cooperating with spaced outlets in said housing for distributing fuel received from said injection pump, and means operatively connected to said shaft for operating said pumping plunger of said fuel injection pump, said means comprising gear means operated by said shaft, pinion means operated by said gear means, an eccentric on said pinion means and engaging said plunger for reciprocating said plunger in said bore and means associated with said pinion means for adjusting said plunger along its axis to control the quantity of fuel supplied by each of the pumping ends of said plunger.
4. In a device of the character described, a
unit including ignition timing means for a circuit breaker and a fuel injection pump, said unit being adapted to supply ignition and fuel to an internal combustion engine, said fuel injection pump comprising a housing having a bore and a double ended plunger pumping element in said bore, a shaft driven by the engine for operating said circuit breaker and fuel injection pump, a distributor sleeve on said shaft and rotatable upon rotation of said shaft, a fuel passageway from said pump to said distributing sleeve, said distributing sleeve surrounding said shaft and having distributing means thereon'and cooperating with spaced outlets in said housing for distributing fuel received from said injection pump, and means operatively connected to said shaft for operating said pumping plunger of said fuel injection pump, said means comprising gear means operated by said shaft, pinion means operated by said gear means, an eccentric on said pinion means and engaging said plunger for reciprocating said plunger in said bore.
