GOLF CLUB Filed July 24, 1947 0M4 WM Arryis Patented Feb. 20, 1951 GOLF CLUB Archibald Frederick Hockey, Enfield, England Application July 24, 1947, Serial No. 763,214 In Great Britain May 9, 1946 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires May 9, 1966 1 Claim. 1 V
This invention relates to golf clubs, and an object is to provide a putter of improved performance as compared with the putters now in use.
A further object of this'invention is to provide a putter which is particularly suitable for use by a player under instructions or as a practice club.
One form of the improved putter will be described as an example, and with reference to the accompanying drawing inuwhich Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a front elevation, a side elevation and a plan of the putter head.
The head is die cast in any desired alloy, e. g. aluminium bronze, and weighs 10 to 14 oz. The sole is fiat and rectangular, with radiused corners, and it measures 2 in. from the heel edge 19 to the toe edge H and 1 /2 in. from the face edge 12 to the back edge 13. The face 14 is raked back at an angle of 3 to 7 to the vertical (the sole being assumed to lie in a horizontal plane).
The edges 10, l I, I2 and 13 have a short radius. The back 15 is plane and vertical. The section of the head taken in planes parallel to the face is substantially uniform from face to back. This section is bounded by the horizontal sole line, a vertical toe line 16 about in. high, an arched top line 11 and a straight heel line I8 about in. high and parallel to the shaft axis 19, which is at an angle of 105 to the sole. A shaft socket 20 is integral with the head, the shaft axis meeting the sole about A; in. from its heel edge In and in. from its face edge I2.
The striking projection 2| is cylindrical, 1 in. in diameter and between 55 and in. deep, its centre 22 being about A; in, from the toe 16. A small V-section groove 23 is formed along the top of the club head from face to back, parallel to the toe edge and vertically aligned with the centre 22. The face of the striking projection 2| is provided with horizontal ridges 24 of sawtooth section, between 2 and in. deep, undercut to an angle of 4 and set with their inclined flanks sloping forwards and downwards.
The player handles the club in the same way as he would any ordinary putter. The rectangular plan of the head, together with the guiding groove 23 formed in it, aid him in keeping the face square to the direction in which the ball is intended to run and in swinging the club accurately along the intended line of run of the ball. The striking projection 2| guides the player in striking the ball at such a point on the face of the head as to eliminate any tendency of the head to be displaced about a vertical axis at the instant of impact with the ball. The sawtooth corrugations 24 tend to impart back spin to the ball.
Iclaim:
A putter head having a flat and rectangular sole the dimension of which from the face to the back of the head is not less than one-half of the dimension thereof from the toe to the heel of the head, a plane face extending from said toe to said heel, all cross sections of the head in planes parallel to said face being substantially similar, the head having a striking portion in the form of a cylinder integral with the remainder of the head and projecting from the general plane of said face, said cylinder having a length not exceeding inch and a diameter of the order of 1 inch and substantially equal to the maximum height of said head, and a shaft socket integral with said head and extending upwards and outwards from said heel adjacent to said face, said striking portion being located substantially midway between said toe and a straight line lying longitudinally on the part of said shaft socket nearest to said toe.
