STEAM DISGHARGING APPARATUS FOR COOKING STOVES.

UNITED STATES ALFRED B. BOWDEN, OF BARRINGTON PATENT OFFICE.
, ASSIGNOR TO MYRON T. KINYON, OF
PAWTUCKE'I, AND CALEB B. PARKER, OF WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND.
STEAM-DISCHARGING APPARATUS FOR COOKING-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,193, dated February 28, 1882. Application tiled December 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALFRED B. BowDEN, of Barrington, in'the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Steam -Discharging Apparatus for Cooking Stoves or Ranges; and
I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken inconnection with the drawings, making apart ofthe same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof'.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a 'vertical section, ot' the apparatus embracing myinvention. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the socket and valve.
The object .of my invention isto carry oft' the steam, vapor, and odor arising from the cooking ot' food; and it consists in the device for that purpose hereinafter described.
Y Cooking stoves and ranges have in their top plates two or more apertures for the reception of pots, kettles, or other culinary vessels usedl for holding articles to be cooked by the fire or heat therefrom. From such pots or vessels usually arises steam or vapor more or less charged with odor, which, unless properly'conducted into a discharge-flue, escapes into the apartment, and sometimes iinds its way over the house. My invention is designed to pre- 'vent the escape of such steam or vapor into the apartment and discharge the same into the stove or range.
I am aware that the cover ofapot has been connected with the smoke-discharge pipe by a tube; and I make no claim lo any such device..
In the drawings, A denotes a stove or range hole cover, having extending down from it a cup or socket, B. The socket B is provided with an opening, a., ou one side below the cover, and a shoulder, b, arranged in and around it, and receives a vertical pipe, C, the lower cnd of which rests upon said shoulder.
In order to make the cover available when the discharging apparatus is detached, it is necessary to provide some means for closing the opening a. For this purpose I make the shoulder b of a separate piece, H, Fig. 3, leaving upon one side an opening, I, corresponding with the opening a in the socket. This separate shoulder'H is capableof rotation Within Jthe socketB, so that the'opening a may be closed or opened, as desired.
From the pipe C, at or near its middle, extendsa pipe, D, provided with a conical mouthpiece,E,thepipeDopeninginto thesaid mouthpiece and the pipe C. Fittinginto the pipe C at its upper end is a separatejoining-tube, T, within which, at its upper end, is inserted an elbowed pipe, F, also provided with a conical mouth-piece, G, which opens into the said elbowed pipe.
With the apparatus as described the conical mouth-pieces can be arranged over two vessels at oncewhile they 'may bein use in or over two of the holes of a stove or range. The socket B may be attached to any part yof the stoveplate, whether it be the cover or division-pieces.
The operation of my invention will be as follows: As the steam or vapor arises it will be drawn in bythe mouth-pieces and carried down thronghthestove-plate, escaping into the stove through the opening a. When the device is removed the shoulder or valve H is rotated so as to close the opening a, as described. With this arrangement for closing the opening a the same cover may be used all the time, or'
D, T, and F, and the socket plate or cover A,
the whole constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. The stove plate or cover A, provided with the pipe-receiving socket B, having a lateral opening, and the pipe-sustaining shoulder, as set forth.
3. Thev stove plate or cover A, constructed with a socket, B, and having in combination therewith a vrotating shoulder or valve, H, for the purpose ot' opening and closing the opening a., as specified.
ALFRED B. BOWDEN.
