Description
(N0 Model.)
0. HOOPES. VENTILATING DEVICE FOR COOKING UTBNSILS.
Patented Sept. 7,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES IIOOPES, OF CONSIIOHOGKEN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MORRIS IIOOPES, OF SAME PLACE.
VENTILATING DEVICE FOR COOKING UTENSILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589, '72? dated September '7, 1897.
Application filed February 3, 1897. Serial No.62 2,494. (l lo model.)
To (657, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES llOOPEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gonshohocken,Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented. certain Improvements in Ventilating Devices for Cooking Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eifective device for carrying off the steam or vapor from a cooking vessel, thereby preventing the dissemination of odors from the cooking food throughout the room or house in which the cooking is being carried on, said odors being in many cases objectionable.
The accompanying drawing shows in longitudinal section. adevice constructed in accord ance with my invention.-
The device comprises a cap or cover 1, which is intended to fit over or to rest upon the top of the kettle, pan, or other cooking utensil which is being employed. From this cap or cover rises a central tube 2, which at the top joins a horizontal tube 3, the latter being free to slide to and iro in another horizontal tube 4-,which is joined to a vertical tube 5, the latter in turn being free to slide in a vertical tube 6, which is centrally secured to a plate 7, adapted to fit over a pot-hole in the stove or range adjacent to that over which the cooking utensil is placed, said plate being secured in position over the pot-hole by any suitable means-as, for instance, by a finger 9, projecting under the stove-top atone side of the plate, and a turnbuckle 10, engaging with the stove-top at the opposite side of the plate and capable of being manipulated by means of a handle 11, carried by the pivot-pin of the turnbuckle and occupying a position on top of the plate 7.
Owing to the draft of the stove or range all steam, vapors, or gases arising from the cooking food are caused to'pass through the pipes 2, 3, 4i, 5, and 6 to the stove-flue and thence to to the chimney without any opportunity of escaping into the room in which the stove or i range is situated. Hence the device etfectually prevents the dissemination of objectionable odors through the room or house in which the cooking is being carried on.
The telescopic joint between the tube- sections 3 and 4 permits of variation in the lateral relations of the cooking vessel and plate 7 to suit the relative distance apart of the pot-holes of different stoves or ranges, While owing to the telescopic connection of the tubes 5 and 6 the lid or cover 1 can be raised or lowered for application to cooking vessels of difierent sizes.
The fiat plate 7 rests upon the top of the stove or range and is of such diameter as to cover a pot-hole of the largest size, while the finger 9 and turnbuckle 10 are connected to the plate 7 so farinwardly from the outer edge of the same that they can enter a pot-hole of the smallest size. Hence the device is applicable to stoves or ranges, generally, irrespective of the size of the openings therein.
The device, moreover, is of simple construction and can therefore be made and sold very cheaply.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- The combination of a lid or cover fora cooking utensil, a plate adapted to rest upon the fiat surface of the top of a stove or range and to cover a pot-hole therein a projecting finger on the under side of the plate at one edge of the same, and a pivoted turnbuckle located on the under side of the plate at the opposite edge of the same and having a handle above .the plate, and a pipe connection between said plate and the lid or cover of the cooking utensil, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES IIOOPES.
IVitnesses:
Jos. H. KLEIN, F. E. BucHToLD.
