G. W. SOWLBS..
l MTIVE POWER FOR SEWING MACHINES.
No. 254,172. Patented-Feb. 28,1882.
:Il 1f A UNITED. STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
GEORGE W. sOWLEs, OE OEITTENANGO, NEW YoRx,Ass1GNOR OE ONE- HALE tro LAWRENCE o. HEsLER, OE sAME PLAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,172, dated February 28, 1882. Application filed January 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SOWLEs, of Chittenango, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Motive Powers for Sewing-Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in the class of sewing-machines which are operated by the power of a spring and by gearings4 which transmit said power and impart motion to the sewing mechanism.
The invention consists in a novel, simple, and effect-ive arrangement of a brake-lever Which is adapted to be connected to almost any sewing-machine standard and readily removed therefrom when desired, and is capable of effectually controlling the motion of the machine.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a vcrtical transverse section of a sewing-machine provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line a: in Fig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the usual standard of a sewing-machine table.
S is a coil-spring wound upon a1nandrel,m, which is journaled in hangers h, secured to the under side of the top plate of the table.
B is a spur-wheel mounted on the mandrel m, and meshing in a pinion, O, which, together with a belt wheel or pulley, E, is journaled on a stud secured to the standard A. A belt, n, extended around lthe wheel E and around a pulley, o, on a mandrel mounted on top of the table, transmits motion to the sewing mechan- 1sm.
ldenotes the brake-lever, designed to control the motion ot' the machine, said lever bcing connected to the machine by means of a hanger-arm, a, which is' attached to the standard A, and terminates with a horizontal projection,1', from the top of which projects a stud, b,-said stud passing through a hole in the lever l, which is fulcrumed onlthe projection i of the hanger.
To the side of the projectionz' toward the free end of the lever is hinged a plate, c, and over this plate the lever l is provided with a transverse slot, s, through which slot passesa set-screw, r, which enters the plate c. The hinged connection between the plate c and the hanger-arm in conjunction with the slot s and setscrew r allows the lever to oscillate both vertically and horizontally.
One end of the lever is extended under the wheel E, and is provided with a post,d, which carries a brake-shoe, D, which by pressure on the opposite end of the lever is brought to bear onto the periphery' of the said wheel, and by such frictional contact checks the motion thereof. i
The lever can be retained in such contact by swinging the free end thereotl toward the standard A and into engagement with a catch, c, on said standard.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the spring-actuated driving mechanism of a sewing-machine and the standard A, the hanger a, provided With the stud b, the plato c, hinged on said hanger, the lever l, pivoted on the stud b, and provided over the plate c with the transverse slot s, the set-screw r, passing through said slot and entering the plate c, the postd on the end of the lever, and provided with the brake-shoe D, and a suitable catch, e, on the standard A, all constructed and combined, substantially in the manner described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county` of Onondaga, in the State ot' New York, this 2d day of January, 1882.
GEORGE WM. SOWLES. [L. sl Witnesses:
CHARLES GARLICK, WM. 0. RAYMOND.
