SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,052, dated April 25, 1882.
(No model To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL NEILLY, ot Bradford, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines', of which the following is a full7 clear, and exact description.
The object ot' my invention is to facilitate the work of sewing with machines; and it consists in certain devices by which the presserbar can he moved and the thread slackened by the same hand at the time of stopping or starting the machine; and, further, in tension devices, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figurel is a side view ot' a sewing-machine fitted with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, partially in section. Figs.3 and 4 are detail cross-sections on the lines x a: and (1/ y of Fig. 2.
A is the hed; B, the arm. C is the balancewheel; D, the presser-har, and E the needlebar, of ordinary construction and arrangement.

Z1v is an arm xed on one end of rod F, beneath alit'tin g-lu g, c, that projects from presserbar D, (see Fig. 4,) the other end of rod F being bent to form a handle portion, d, neit to the balance-wheel C.
c is aweighted arm xed on the rod, so that it tends to turn Vthe same in a direction to release arm b from the lug c, said arm e being formed with a projection, c', (see Fig. 3,) by which the movement is limited.
It will be seen that the presser-bar can be raised by bringing down the end d of rod F, and when fully raised a notch in lug c is engaged bythe end of arm b, and the parts thus retained. The thread-slackin g device is at the other side of arm B. G is a bent lever, pivoted at f, and having on its outer end an eye, g, through which the thread will pass from the tension devices.
7i is a slide attached on arm B by a screw, t, passing through a slot in the slide. The slide balance-wheel, the handle of the rod F, and
the finger-piece of the thread-slackener all together, where they can be operated by one hand of the operator. To illustrate, the presser-foot being raised and the goods placed for sewing, the right hand ot' the operator is to be placed on the wheel to start the machine, as usual, and by the same motion the thumb is placed beneath the end d of rod F to raise said end' and release the presser-har. In turning a corner, while the hand is placed on the wheel to slacken the speed, the thumb can be readily placed on rod F and the presser-foot raised sumciently to allow the goods to turn. When the goods are to be removed the presser-har is raised by pressing the end d of rod F downward, and at the same time the thumb is placed on the bent end of slide h andthe slide moved, and thelever G being thereby raised, the thread is drawn from the spool to the extent required for slackening. In all these movements but one hand is used,leaving the other free to handle the goods, and the operations can be done almostentirely by feeling. Time is thus saved, and the sewing` carried on with great convenience and facility.

vbent in U form and iXed on arm B, and two springtongues, 7s Z, attached at their midlength by a screw, m, entering one end of the plate. The thread passes through a slot, k', in the upper tongue and between the outer ends of the two tongues, these ends being pressed together by a set-screw, n, tapped through the plate 2'.. The slot k is partially covered by a spring-plate, o, held down by screw m, so that it retains the thread in the slot. To place the thread it is passed beneath the end of spring o until it is within the slot k', and it is then drawn between the tongues, this being done without letting go of the thread.
It is also to be observed that the ends ofthe tongues 7a Z where the thread is held are unsupported, and may' thus move with the thread up and down without slaclzening the tension.
