Description

(No Model.)
J. E. SCHMIDT.
I DRIVING MITT.
No. 254,164. Patented Feb. 28,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J ULlUS E. SCHMIDT, OF' ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
DRIVING-MITT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,164, dated February 28, 1 882.
' Application filed January 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS E. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Mitts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mittens or handprotectors used in driving horses in cold or stormy weather; and it consists in mittens having straps or loops connected to or forming part of the driving-reins secured within them, whereby the hands of the driver are protected, as hereinafter shown.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side view of one of the mittens attached to arein,
usual metal clasps, E. By this means the driver is enabled to grasp the reins with his bare hands or with only the ordinary drivinggloves in the coldest weather without being afl'ected by the cold.
' These mitts will be found especially useful in driving spirited horses, as the hands will always be in condition to handle the reins in all emergencies.
The loop 0 may be continued backward in the form of one strap, as shown by dotted lines Fin Fig. 1, and attached to the reinsDagain, if desired, to still further increase its efficiency.
What I claim as new is-- As a new article of manufacture, a drivingmitt having a strap or loop fixed therein, said strap or loop adapted to be attached to or form part of the driving-reins, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS E. SCHMIDT. Witnesses:
