This invention relates to supports and more particularly to an adjustable base for supporting a typewriter or.other appliance in a variety of positions suitable to the operator or the work being undertaken.
Briefly stated, the invention comprises a support in the nature of a turntable adapted to be secured to an article of furniture such as a desk or other appropriate foundation and includes means for adjustably accommodating the support to various sizes of typewriters or other appliances and also includes means for permitting provide a supporting base for typewriters or other appliances which is adapted to be conveniently secured to a desk or other appropriate foundation and including means to permit sliding movement of the support relative to the desk or foundation whereby the typewriter or other appliance may be located wholly within the confines of the desk or may be supported in a projected position outwardly of the desk.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a supporting base for a typewriter or other appliance which includes means for permitting angular adjustment of the base regardless of the position thereof relative to the desk and which may be locked in such angularly. adjusted position in order to present the typewriter or other appliance in a position which is convenient to the operator.
It is a further object of the inventionto provide a support for typewriters or other appliances which may be constructed almost entirely of sheet metal stampings or other equivalent structural forms resulting in an extremely economical device which may be manufactured and sold in a highly competitive market.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

With continued reference to the drawings the adjustable base or support of this invention comprises two main sub-assemblies, the first being a sub-base l0 and the second being the supporting base I I which serves to directly engage and support the typewriter or other appliance. The subbase It as best shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 6 comprises a lower member I2 of generally channel cross section which may rest upon and be secured to a supporting surface l3 such as the top of a desk or other foundation. The member I2 is provided with apertures l4 adjacent each end thereof for receiving screw threaded fastening means or the like 15. Member I2 is provided with side flanges I6 which are bent inwardly at H to provide a longitudinal groove or track i8. The member I2 is also provided in the top surface thereof with a plurality of apertures 19 arranged in substantially parallel rows, the purpose of which will be presently described.
Slidably received in the grooves or tracks [8 are the longitudinal side flanges 25 of the upper sub-base member 2i which is also of channel cross section and which serves to receive the lower sub-base member It in nested relationship as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Upper sub-base member 2| is provided in the upper surface thereof with a plurality of apertures 22 designed to cooperate with the apertures IS in lower sub-base member E2 in a manner and for a purpose to be presently described. Member 25 is also provided in the upper surface thereof with a plurality of apertures 23 which serve to receive fastening means for securing the member 2| to the main base member 3 I.
The main base member H as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is of sheet metal construction and comprises two sliclably related side sections 2 and 25, these sections having relatively broad fiat surfaces 25 and 2'! adapted to support the legs of the typewriter or other appliance, sections 25 and 25 also being provided with longitudinal slots 28 and 29 to receive fastening means for securing the typewriter or other appliance in position.
Side section 24 is provided adjacent each end thereof with arms 30 extending at substantially right angles thereto, these arms having a dovetail cross sect-ion. Connecting the arms 33 and disposed in substantially parallel relationship to the section 2% is a channel shaped portion 3| which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of upper sub-base member 2i and which is provided with a central aperture 32 for receiving a rivet or other appropriate fastening member 33 which also engages the central aperture 23 in member 2! and serves to secure portion 3| to member 2 i in pivotal relationship. Portion 35 is also provided with arcuate slots 34 disposed on each side of the rivet 33, these slots serving to receive pins or other appropriate members 35 which are fixed in the remaining apertures 23 in the member 2 i. Pins 35 engaging in the arcuate slots 3:3 serve to limit the pivotal movement of portion 35 and associated parts with relation to the subbase it, and also cooperate with the rivet 33 to prevent separation of the members I2 and 2!.
The side section 25 of the upper base i l is also provided with parallel arms 35 extending at substantially right angles thereto, these arms being of dove-tail cross section and being telescopically received within the arms 39 in order to permit adjustment of the distance between side sections 24 and 25 thereby accommodating typewriters or other appliances of different widths. No means is provided for securing sections 24 and 25 in adjusted relationship since the engagement .of the fastening means in slots 23 and 29 for securing the typewriter or other appliance thereto will effectively prevent relative movement between these sections.
It will be seen from the above description that the upper base ii provides in effect a turntable plvotally mounted upon the sub-base in, the relative pivotal movement being limited by the engagement of pins 35 in arcuate slots 33. In order to lock the upper base it in any intermediate angular position relative to the sub-base ii] there is provided a locking .bar 37 which is rotatably and-slidably received in apertures 33 in section 25 and in aperture 39 in portion 3 I. Locking bar 31 is provided adjacent its outer end with a handle 49 for convenient manipulation by the operator and at its inner end with a horizontal angularly extending portion li terminating in a downwardly extending locking portion 32. As best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the looking portion extends through a selected aperture 22 in the upper sub-base member 2! and through the corresponding or mating aperture E9 in the lower sub-base member 52. This engagement of the locking portion 42 serves to prevent relative angular movement between the sub-base it! and the upper base H. The locking portion 62 may be conveniently disengaged from the apertures by rotation of the handle it. If desired apertures 22 might be arranged in an arc in which case looking bar 3? need not be slidable but only rotatable. Also if desired resilient means may be provided for urging locking portion 42 into engagement with apertures 22 and i9.
Since, as shown in Fig. '7, the upper base I and upper sub-base member H are slidably mounted with relation to the lower sub-base member l2 it follows that apertures 22 in the upper sub-base member 2i would register with different apertures i 9 in the lower sub-base member !2 depending upon the relative longitudinal position of these members. It will also be obvious that upon relative angular movement between the upper base H and the sub-base ID, if the locking portion 42 of th bar 31 were fixed in one position relative to the upper base II, that the locking portion 12 would register with one of the apertures 22 in the upper sub-base member 2| only in a given position of the upper base II. Consequently, the bar 3'! is slidacly mounted in apertures 38 and 39 in order to permit moving this bar inwardly or outwardly in order to register with th appropriat aperture 22 and the particular aperture I9 positioned therebeneath in an angular adjustment of the upper base H within the limits provided by the arcuate slots 34. Thus the locking bar 37 and locking portion #52 may be utilized to secure the upper base II and the sub-base it against relativ angular movement in any desired position.
As will be sen from an inspection of Fig. '7, the support of this invention may be disposed in any desired position inwardly or outwardly of the desk or other foundation and in any of these positions ma be angularly adjusted and locked in such adjusted position to support the typewriter or other appliance in a suitable and .convenient location. It will likewise be seen that the support of this invention may be conveniently constructed of relatively simple inexpensive sheet metal stampings and that the locking bar "31 may be formed of wire by simple bending operations. The support is sufiiciently rugged and stable to accomplish the purpose for which it is intended and may be conveniently utilized in conjunction with conventional or already existing equipment to provide a substantiall universal mounting therefor resulting in greater versatility and substantially increased emciency of the personnel using the typewriter or other appliance.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said subbase comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base comprising spaced parallel side sections for receiving and supporting said appliance, slots in said sections for receiving fastening means to secure said appliance thereto, said sections being connected by spaced parallel telescopically relatedarms of dove-tail crosssection whereby the distance between said sections may be varied to accommodate appliances of different widths, a portion connecting said arms and being pivotally mounted upon said upper member, arcuat slots in .said portion, pins secured to said upper member and extending through said slots to limit relative angular movement between said upper base and said sub-base. a plurality of rows of apertures in said lower member, a single row of apertures in said upper member, said single row of apertures registering withone of said plurality of rows depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and lower members and a locking bar slidablyand rotatably mounted in said upper bas having a locking portion selectively engageable with :the appropriate registering apertures to lock .said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.

An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base comprising spaced parallel side sections for receiving and. supporting said appliance, means in said sections for receiving fastening means to secure said appliance thereto, said sections being connected by spaced slidably related arms or dove-tail cross section whereby the distance between said sections'may be varied to accommodate appliances of different widths, a portion connecting said arms and being pivotally mounted upon said upper member, means to limit relative angular movement between said upper base and said sub-base, a plurality of rows of apertures in said lower member, a single row of apertures in said upper member, said single row of apertures registering with one of said plurality of rows depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and said lower members and a locking bar slidably and rotatably mounted in said upper base having a locking portion selectively engageable with the appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said sup-porting surfaces.
3. An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comp-rising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base comprising spaced parallel side sections for receiving and supporting said appliances, said sections being connected by spaced parallel slidably related arms whereby the distance between said sections may be varied to'accommodate appliances of different widths, a portion connecting said arms and being pivotally mounted upon said upper member, means to limit relative angular movement between said upper base and said sub-base, a plurality of rows of apertures in said lower member, a single row of apertures in said upper member, said single row of apertures registering with one of said plurality of rows depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and lower members and a locking bar slidably and rotatably mounted in said upper'base having a locking portion selectively engageable with the appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.
4. An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base comprising spaced side sections for receiving and supporting said appliances, said sections being slidably connected whereby the distance therebetween may be varied to accommodate appliances of different widths, means pivotally mounting said sections upon said upper member, means to limit the relative angular movement between said upper base and said subbase, a plurality of apertures in said lower member, a plurality of apertures in said upper member, the apertures in said upper member registering with certain of said apertures in said lower member depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and lower members and a locking bar slidably and rotatably mounted in said upper base having a locking portion selectively engageable with the appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.

An adjustable support for appliances includ ing an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base comprising spaced side sections for receiving and supporting said appliances, means adjustably connecting said sections whereby the distance therebetween may be varied to accommodate appliances of difierent widths, means pivotally mounting'said sections upon said upper member, means to limit pivotal movement between said upper base and said sub-base, apertures in said lower member, apertures in said upper member, the apertures in said upper member registering with certain of the apertures in said lower member depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and lower members and. a locking bar mounted in said upper base having a locking portion selectively engageable with the appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.

An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface,- said upper base comprising spaced side sections for receiving and supporting said appliances, means adjustably connecting said sections whereby the distance therebetween may be varied to accommodate appliances of different widths, means pivotally mounting said sections upon said upper member, means to limit pivotal movement between said upper base and said sub-base, apertures in said lower member, apertures in said upper member, the apertures in said upper member registering with certain of the apertures in said lower member depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and lower members, and means on said upper base selectively engageable with the appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting base.
7 An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base having means for receiving and supporting said appliance, said upper base being pivotally mounted upon said upper member, means to limit pivotal movement between said upper base and said sub-base, apertures in said lower member, apertures in said upper member, the apertures in said upper member registering with certain apertures in said lower member depending upon the longitudinal relationship between said upper and lower members, and means on said upper base selectively engageable with the appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.

An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured together in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting surface, said upper base having means for receivin and supporting said appliances, means pivotally mounting said upper base on said upper member, a plurality of apertures in said lower member, a plurality of apertures in said upper member, the apertures in said upper member registering with certain of the ape tures in said lower member deser: ins upo the l n itudinal re at nship betw en said upper an l w mem rs and means n said u per ase l c iv ly en a ea e with he appropriate registering apertures to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.
9, An adjustable support for appliances including an upper base and a sub-base, said sub-base comprising upper and lower members secured to,- gether in slidable relationship and means to secure said lower member to a supporting'surface; said upper base having means to receive and sups port said appliances, means pivotally mounting said upper base upon said upper member and means on said upper base engaging portions of said upper and lower members to lock said upper base in adjusted position relative to said supporting surface.
