INVENTOR /fl//LL/A/w C. HORN/405775@ BY g ATTORNEYS Patented F eb. 13, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BED Divided and this application March 9, 1945, Serial No. 581,751
2 Claims.
. l This application is a division of my U. S. Letters Patent No. 2,376,114, granted May 15, 1945.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture and more particularly to beds.
The primary object of this invention resides in a bed in which the headboard is interchangeable with the headrail to facilitate the changing of the design of the headboard, thus making it unnecessary for the owner of the bed to purchase an entire new bed when the color scheme or style of bedroom furniture is changed.
Another feature of the invention is to provide a bed construction in which certain parts are standardized to make them interchangeable to facilitate the use of different designs of headboards.
Other novel features of the invention will become apparent as the following. specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed in set-up position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional View on the line 4-4 of Figure l.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary collective perspective view of the parts of the bed in separated position.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral Iii designates my improved bed in its entirety which includes identical side rails II-II, a head rail I2, a foot rail I3, and four corner legs I 4 to which the aforesaid rails are releasably locked in a novel manner to be presently described. The side rails II-II are of a length to suit the user of the bed, that is, if the bed is intended for a child, the side rails will be relatively short, if for a medium height adult, they may be of average length, while for an exceptionally tall person the same may be of a length greater than average. Also, the head and foot rails may be of a length to meet the requirements of a single, three quarters, or double bed to suit the needs of the user.
The rails II-II, I2, and I3 are of like construction and have straight ends. Preferably the rails are made of metal channel stock and each includes a relatively wide vertical riser I5, a top inwardly extending flange IE, and a relatively narrow inwardly extending bottom flange I1. A portion of the riser I5 is shown as inwardly offset to form a recessed portion I8 in which an ornamented plastic or wood panel (not shown) may be countersunk for decorative purposes. The ends of each rail II-I I, I2, and i3 are provided with metal locking plates I9-I 9 which are welded, riveted or otherwise xedly secured to the inner side of the riser i5. Each plate extends beyond the end of the rail to provide a tongue portion 2e having a slot 2i extending downwardly from the top edge thereof. The free end of each tongue portion 29 is rounded as at 23 to facilitate the insertion into its related leg I4 as will be presently explained.
Each corner leg Ill is preferably constructed of metal and is of hollow construction which is open at its top and closed at its bottom. The leg I4 is square in cross section and has an upper vertical body portion 24 and a lower downwardly tapered portion 25. Vertical elongated slots 26 are provided in two adjacent right angular side walls of the upper body portion 2li, the width and length of said slots being equal to or slightly greater than the thickness and height respectively of the tongue 253 which it receives. The slot 25 in each wall is outwardly offset with respect to its longitudinal mid-portion so that the joints between the ends of the rails and the legs will be adjacent the outer exposed side faces of the legs as best illustrated in Figures l and 5.
Associated with the respective legs at the foot of the bed ID are locking key members 2l' and associated with the legs I4 at the head of said bed are locking key members 28. Each locking key member 2l and 28 comprises a metal key body composed of flat right angular-ly disposed portions 2e-29 to form a key to which a flat cap 3i] is flxedly secured. The cap 3B is preferably made of plastic for decorative purposes and covers the open top of the leg when the locking key is in locking position therein. The key portions are of a width equal to the respective widths of the inner adjacent walls of the leg which they are adapted to engage.
To effect a locking of adjacent ends of two right angularly disposed rails together, the tongues 20-20 of the rails are respectively inserted through the slots 2li- 26 of the leg It, whereupon the key member 21 or 28, depending upon whether the connection is between the foot or head rail and the side rails, is inserted downwardly through the open top of the leg, whereupon the key portions 29--29 respectively enter the slots 2I-2I of the tongues 2li-23. The flat cap 30 rests upon the top of the leg when it is fully inserted therein to close the same and impart decoration to the corner leg connection. Thus, when all four rails are similarly connected in cross section. Each pin 3| is preferably madev of metal and extends through an opening 3`2 in the cap 30. The lower end of the pinA 3| is disposed in the crotch between the right angularly disposedV key portions 29-29 to which it is welded or otherwise permanently secured as at 33.
The upwardly extending portions of the pins 3I-3I respectively enter sockets 34-34 provided in a headboard 35. The sockets 34%-34 open through the bottom of the headboardl 35 and are so spaced to receive the respective pins, the bot tom of the headboard resting upon the top fiange I6 of the head rail I2 to relieve the weight of the same from the pins.Y The pin and socket connections between the head corner legs and the headboard are vsnug and rigid to prevent loose play therebetween.
From Ythe foregoing description and accompanying drawings, it will be understood that various size beds may be rapidly assembled by a furniture store by maintaining a stock of head, foot, yand side rails of different lengths. VAlso various designs'of furniture may be made by a varied stock of rails such as twin beds, lounges, couches, and other articles of bed-like furniture. Further, by reason of the removable connection of the :headboard with the head corner legs, various-styles Iof headboards may be interchangeably associated with the bed which enables a salesman to display a variety of bed styles to a prospective customer, and which permits the user of a bed to change the style from time to time to meet .his or her artistic taste and to conform to theperiod furnishings of a bedroomA Y It will be understood .that should the purchaser of'y a bed desire a foot board, the foot corner legs may also be provided with locking key members 2g and the foot board with pin-receiving sockets 3 r.
While I have shown and described what I con-Y sider to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish. it to be understood that such changes in design and materials as come within thescope of the appended claims may be resorted toifk desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :V
1. In a bed having'a pair of spaced apart tubular legs, each leg being open at its top and substantially square in cross section, a cap 'meini ber for each leg, said cap member comprising a body formed of two flat right angularly disposed walls snugly fitting within the open end of the leg and atly abutting two adjacent walls thereof, each of said walls of the legs having a vertical slot therein near the upper end of said wall, partly overlapped by the walls of the cap, the cap also having la flat top attached -to the body resting upon the top edge of the tubular leg, and a pin extending through a hole Vin said top having its lower portion disposed in the inner corner of the angularly disposed walls and welded to said walls, the pin projecting out of the top of the cap. 2. In a bed having a pair of spaced apart tubular legs, eachleg being open at its top, a cap member for each leg, said cap member comprising a body formed of a key snugly fitting Within the open end of the leg and flatly abutting the interior surface thereof, each of the legs having a vertical slot thereinnear the upper end thereof, partly overlapped by the key of the cap, each capV also having a flat top attached to the body resting upon the top edge of the tubular leg, and apin extending through a. .hole in said top having its lower portion disposed `adjacent the inner surface of the key and welded to said lzey, the pin projecting out of the top of the cap member.
