GERM AND DRAFT PREVENTING MEANS FOR COMMUNICATING OPENINGS IN WINDOWS AND THE LIKE Flled May 15 1948 INVENTORQ 4 BRT60L w/v/(a BY fix; Q...
lL-lrd A T TOR/VEX Patented Jan. 30, 1%51 UNITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE GERM AND DRAFT PING: MEANS "FOR I COMMUNICATING OPENINGS IN WIN- DowsANnnauKE.
Albert navinkennew York, 'NJY. Application May 15, 1948, Serial N6. 27,256 2 Claims. (01. 20-40) This invention relates to new and useful means adapted for use in connection with windows in hospitals, and windows in ticket selling offices, or the like, which windows usually all are provided with a small customarily round opening in the center thereof through which communication takes place between the person outside and the person inside this opening.
Under these circumstances the person inside the hospital or ticket selling window is generally always exposed to drafts or, what is still worse, to the contagion of communicable diseases.
It is an object of this invention to eliminate this inconvenience or danger by providing a device, which while closing said opening in the window, will permit the sound of any word spoken by a person on the outside to be heard by the person on the inside without, of course, in any manner impairing the visibility through the medium closing said opening.
The saidinvention comprises a ringformed device covered by a very thin plastic film which latter is easily removable.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, claimed and illus trated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my device arranged to close an opening in a window of the kind hereinbefore described.
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 22 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view taken on the line 44 in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is an end View of circular plate adapted to close the opening in the ringformed device.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral It indicates a window having a circular opening therein as shown in dotted lines at 12. A ring-shaped frame l I of any suitable material is mounted in the opening i2 of the glass.
The said frame comprises four ring-formed members. Thus it has an outer annular member l3 provided with a flange M, which substantially fits the opening l2 in the window, said flange I4 is upon its inner side adapted to threadedly receive a flange [5 formed upon a second annular member "5..
The outer annular member l3 forms with the flange l5 of the annular member "5 a seat I! for a third annular member l8. Said latter mem-- ber I8 is provided with an inwardly extending flange I9 adapted to be engaged by an inwardly projecting flange 20 of an annular split ring 2|, which also has a peripheral flange 22 that together with the flange 20 forms a snug fitting with the second annular member it when in closed position.
The annular split ring 2| is connected to the second annular member I 6 by a hinge joint 24, while the said split ring is secured together by a bolt 25 inserted through two lugs 26, 26 upon said split ring and threaded into one of said lugs.
I A turnable wing nut 21 mounted upon the annular member I6 is adapted to secure the parts in locked position.
A circular plate 28 formed with a knob 29 is adapted to cover the plastic film 30 when the window is closed to service.
Said plate 28 has a projection 3| adapted to fit in a tiny slot 32 shown in dotted lines in the annular member I6 to facilitate the engagement of said plate.
A washer 33 of suitable material may, if necessary, be inserted between the glass of the window proper and the device to obtain a close fitting.
The plastic film is cut from a blank by placing it on top of the annular member [8 and next pressing the split ring down upon the latter, the edges of these two parts will cut the said film circularly, and by tightening the split ring upon the latter said film will attain a drum-like ten- It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described herein.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a device of the class described, an annular member, a flange upon the latter adapted to fit an opening in a window, a second annular member, a flange upon the latter adapted to threadedly engage said first flange, a third annular member having an inwardly extending flange, and an annular split ring mounted on said third flange, and a thin plastic film held between raid third annular member and said split ring, the latter being hingedly connected to the second annular member, means for tightening the split ring around the third annular member, and further means arranged upon the second member for securing said parts in locked position.
2. A device of the class described, having four interengaged ring members, and comprising an outer annular member provided with a flange adapted to fit an opening in a window, a second annular member having a flange threadedly engaging the inner side of said first flange, the outer annular member and the flange of the second annular member forming a seat, a third annular member engaging said seat, said third annular member having a flange inwardly projecting, an annular split ring provided with an inwardly projecting flange adapted to engage the flange of said third annular member, the split ring having a peripheral flange, the latter and the inwardly 4 projecting flange of said split ring being adapted to'form a snug fitting with the second annular member, and means for hingedly securing the split ring to the latter.
