Description

FASTENING DEVICE Filed Nov. 14, 1949 Patented Jan. 23, V1951 Rosalind G. Greenberg, Springfield, Mass., as-
signor to Varsity Manufacturing Company, Springfield, Mass., a corporation Application November 14, 19.49,` Serial No. 127,140
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastening devices and is directed more particularly to the provision of particular fastening device which is constructed and arranged for fastening pliable materials together and to an improvement in the means for accomplishing same.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a novel and improved construction of the type in which a device is constructed and arranged for securing parts of diapers togethers and there is the further provision of means whereby pins are not required so as to eliminate the now present objectionable inconveniences and which will operate with a maximum amount of ease and with a minimum degree of effort.
That is to say, the device of my invention `is arranged for various uses and is particularly adapted for securing parts of diapers together since it has no pin points or sharp protuberances which are likely to cause injury to the wearer.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth.
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a fastening device embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view shown in the device of Figs. 1 and 2 as it is used with a pliable material; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 3.
In the above mentioned drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specication, I have shown but one embodiment of my invention which is deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail,
and referring more particularly to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a fastening device which is represented generally by 2.
. It is formed from a single strip of relatively thin metal to have an elongated body l and a strip 6 extending from therear end thereof.
The body 4 is provided with an elongated opening 8 therethrough having sides le, a rear side i2, and a forward side I4.
The strip 6 extends upwardly at l5 from the rearend of thebody, inwardly at l 6, downwardly at 20 and forwardly in the form of a free tongue 22, as is best shown in Fig. 2.
A forward end portion 24 of the tongue extends upwardly and a manually engageable fiat membei` 25 is provided at the extremity thereof.
The lower end of the portion 20 provides a shoulder 30 for engagement with the rear end of the slot l2 and the lower end of the portion 24 provides a shoulder 32.
The strip or tongue, if not the body, is resilient or flexible.
The tongue is of less transverse width than the width of the slot, as is shown in Fig. 1, so as to provide elongated spaces at the sides of the tongue.
The construction at the rear end of the tongue is such that the tongue tends to assume approximately the position shown in Fig. 1. The portions I5, I8 and 2@ are such that the tongue may be elevated as indicated by the dot-dash lines in Fig. 2 so as to permit material to be passed between the tongue and the body.
A plurality of plies of material, indicated by M in Figs. 3 and 4, which are to be secured together may be disposed between the tongue and the upper side of the body and the tongue depressed to the position shown in Fig. 3.
As the tongue is depressed, the shoulder 39 abuts the rear end i2 of the slot in the body and being resilient or springlike, the tongue is lowered more or less and the shoulder 34 forces the material against the forward end lli of the slot so as to hold it securely.
The material is displaced downwardly into the slot by the tongue and extends upwardly from below the tongue through the spaces between the longitudinal sides of the tongue and the slot.
To free the material the tongue is elevated so that the material is released from between the shoulder 32 and end I4 of the slot.
The device is adapted for use in connection with plural plies of pliable material.
The invention may be embodied in other specic forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefor to be considered in al1 respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall with-inthe meaning' and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be ernbraced therefore.
What it is desired to claim and secure byfliett'ers Patent of the United States is:
As a new article of manufacture, a fastening device comprising in combination, an elongated,
relatively thin resilient metal strip formed to have a horizontal lower elongated body provided with an elongated opening of a certain transverse,
Width terminating at rear and forward'ends inwardly of rear and forward ends of said body and an upper strip integral'with and-.extending generally forwardly from the` rear end of said body, said strip extending vertically upwardly from the rear end of said body then horizontally forwardly above the plane of said' body and then downwardly vertically through the opening providing a rear shoulder portion for engagement with the rear end o-f the opening and terminating in a forwardly extending elongated tongue, the forward end portion of said tongue being disposed vertically upwardly as a forward shoulder adjacent the forward end of thev opening with` the l the tongue in engagement with the rear end of the .opening of said body material may be urged by the tongue into the opening at opposite sides of said'tonguevand engaged between the forward shoulder of the tongue and forward end of the opening.
