2 Claims.
This invention relates to tags or tickets. for application to merchandisev in department stores and the like, and more particularly to tags or tickets for attachment to the conventional buttons of an article of clothing, such as are found, for example, on sleeves of suit-coats,. jackets, and overcoats.
One object of the invention is to provide a ticket of the characterv described which may be.
quickly and easily attached to the buttons of an article of clothing, thereby to greatly facilitate the tagging and marking of merchandise. At the same time there is provided a ticket of maximum strength and durability obviating the dangers of accidental tearing or other damage attendant on the inevitable haste and careless ap- I formation appearing thereon and possible separation of the ticket from the merchandise. Further objects of the invention are. to provide a ticket of the character described which may be made of small and convenient size without in any way detracting from its strength or durability, which provides ample space for accommodating essential information relating to the article of clothing, which is easily and inexpensively manufactured in a form conveniently adaptable to printing machines of a known type and which is pleasing in appearance.
In one aspect the invention involves a ticket for attachment to adjacent buttons of an article of clothing and having an elongate slot at least equal in length to the distance between the shanks of.
said buttons, one end of the slot being of sufiicient width to accommodate the shank of one button and the opposite end of'the slot being of sufiicient width to accommodate the shank of the adjacent button, and a slit communicating with said opposite end of the slot, whereby, without injury to the ticket, the shank of the adjacent button may be received in said opposite end of the slot when the shank of the one button is accommodated in the one end of the slot,
may be received in said second enlarged portion when the shank of the one button is accommodated in the enlarged portion at the one end of the slot, thereby to hold the ticket in a fixed position. on the article of. clothing. The ticket may be. elongate and the slot intermediate the elongate edges of the ticket and elongate in the direction of. the length of the ticket a distance suflici ent to bridge the gap between the shanks of the adjacent buttons. In a preferred aspect, the slot is spaced inwardly from one end of the ticket and intermediate the elongate edges of the ticket a distance sufiicient to bridge the gap between the shanks of the adjacent buttons and the slit communicates with and extends away from the second enlarged portion in the direction of the length of the ticket.
In a more specific aspect, the invention involves a price ticket for attachment to adjacent buttons of an article of clothing comprising a narrow elongate body having a slot centrally disposed relative to the width of the body and elongate lengthwise of the body a distance sufficient to bridge the gap between the shanks of the adjacent. buttons, a price-mark space at one end of the body for a row of price marks extending transversely of the body, the space extending lengthwise of the body far enough to receive a plurality of rows of marks, a narrow zone extencling lengthwise of the body above the slot for rows of identification indicia extending lengthwise of the body, a-narrow zone extending lengthwise of the body below the slot for a store name, an enlarged portion at one end of the slot for accommodating the shank of one button, a second enlarged portion at the opposite end of the slot for; accommodating the shank of the adjacent button and a slit connecting with and extending away from the second enlarged portion lengthwise of the ticket.
In still another aspect, the invention involves an article of manufacture comprising a plurality of long narrow sections interconnected alon a weakened line extending lengthwise of the sections, each section constituting a detachable ticketfor, attachment to adjacent buttons of an article of clothing andhaving an elongate slot which, when the ticket is detached along the weakened line, is of suflicient length to bridge the gap between the shanks of the adjacent buttons, an enlarged portion at one end of the slot for accommodating the shank of one button, a second enlarged portion. at the opposite end of the slot for accommodating the shank of the adjacent button, and a slit communicating with the second enlarged portion.
Forthepurpose of illustration a preferred ea bodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a face view of a strip of a plurality of tickets embodying one form of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a face view of a detached ticket of the embodiment of Fig. 1 shown attached to the sleeve buttons of an article of clothing.
Referring to Fig. 1, a, preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a strip of long, narrow sections l of preferably substantiall stiif paper, each section constituting a ticket and the tickets being interconnected along weakened lines 2 extending lengthwise of the sections.
With reference to Figs. 1 and 2 each ticket is formed with a slot 3 spaced. inwardly from one end a of the ticket, centrally disposed relative to the width of the ticket and elongate lengthwise of the ticket a distance sufficient to bridge the gap between the shanks of adjacent buttons 5 and 5 2). The slot is formed at one end with an enlarged portion '5 to accommodate the shank of a button 5 and at the opposite end is formed with a second enlarged portion 8 to accommodate the shank of the adjacent button 6. The second enlarged portion is slightly longer than the enlarged portion 7 to allow for small variations in the length of the gap between the shanks of said buttons.
A slit iii communicates with the second enlarged portion 8 at point H and extends away from the second enlarged portion lengthwise of the ticket.
Price marks i2 are printed transversely across the opposite end 43 of the face of each ticket and enough blank space is left inwardly of each ticket so that the ticket may be remarked with new price marks.
Extending lengthwise of the ticket and between the slot 3 and the elongate edge I of the ticket are printed rows 55 and E5 of suitable indicia giving in code a comprehensive description of the m rchandise. Also extending lengthwise of the ticket and between the slot 3 and the opposite elongate edge ll of the ticket is the printed name i of the particular store in which the merchandise is sold.
Between the tickets and along the weakened lines 2 are spaced feed openings 28 for use in feeding the strip of tickets through a printing machine as described in the patent to Flood, 2,121,864, granted June 28, 1938.
From the foregoing it is evident that to attach a ticket to the buttons of a garment sleeve 2| the ticket is first detached from the strip of tickets along he weakened line 2. The button 5 is then inserted through the slot 3 as a button is inserted through a button hole. The ticket is then pulled in the direction of the end I3 to cause the shank of the button 5 to be forced through the slot 3 and to enter the enlarged portion 1, This step brings the shank of the adjacent button 6 into juxtaposed position with the second enlarged portion 8 at the opposite end of the slot. button 5 is then inserted through a portion of slit the second enlarged portion 8 and a portion of the slot 3 in a similar manner, the shank of the button being received in the seconden- The larged portion 8 whereby the ticket is held 'in slot and its enlargements and the length of the slit may be varied to meet and compensate for special conditions such as the size and space of the buttons and the thickness of the ticket.
I claim:
1. An elongate ticket for attachment to a pair of juxtaposed buttons of an article of clothing, having an elongate slot intermediate the elongate edges of the ticket and of a width to allow the shank of a button to be drawn longitudina'ly therein, the opposite ends of the slot each terminating in an enlarged aperture for accommodating the shank of one of the buttons of said pair, the edges defining each of the apertures being spaced apart transversely of the longitudinal axis of the slot substantially the width of the shank of the buttons, at least one of said apertures being elongate in shape having its longitudinal axis aligned with the longitudinal axis of the slot and the said edges defining the elongate aperture extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slot substantially throughout their length, thereby to accommodate various spacings of the shanks in said apertures and to hold the ticket in fixed position.
'2. An elongate ticket for attachment to a pair of juxtaposed buttons of an article of clothing, having an elongate slot intermediate the elongate edges of the ticket and of a width to allow the shank of a button to be drawn longitudinally therein, the opposite ends of the slot each terminating in an enlarged aperture for accommodating the shank of one of the buttons of said pair, the edges defining each of the apertures being spaced apart transversely of the longitudinal axis of the slot substantially the width ofthe shank of the buttons, at least one of said apertures being elongate in shape having its longitudinal axis aligned with the longitudinal axis of the slot and the said edges defining the elongate aperture extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slot substantially throughout their length, thereby to accommodate various spacings of the shanks in said apertures and to hold the ticket in fixed position, the body of said ticket having a slit aligned with the longitudinal axis of and communicating with said elongate aperture, thereby to facilitate reception of the shank of one button in said elongate aperture when the shank of the other button is accommodated in the other aperture.
