UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. ODELL, OF DEGKERTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
BRUSH FOR CLEANING MlLK-QANSQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,884, dated February 21, 1882.
Application filed July 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN K. ODELL, of Deckertown, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new'and useful Improvement in Brushes f or Cleaning Milk- Cans, of which the followingis aspecification. My invention relates to an adjustable brush for cleaning milk-cans; and it consist-sin a conbrushin a can and expanded, and Fig.2shows a brush contracted and adapted to be inserted in a can. Fig.3 is adetailed view of the lower end of a brush.
In my construction, A is a central shaft, to which I pivot arms B, made to extend out to receive, by pivot connection, the brushes 0, adapted in shape to the inside of the can D.
In the outer end of the arms is a slot, E, in which the pivot-pin F is made to move, but, by springs G, pressed outwardly, carrying the brushes and adjusting them to the slightly-'- varying diameter of the cans.
On the top of the can is a cross-block, H, having the notches I, to receive the edges of the can, and a hole, K, to receive the shaft A and form a'bearing for it, on the top of which is the crank L, for rotating the brushes in a can. At the bottomof each brush is a rightangle section, M, and a similar brush, N, is secured to the foot of the shaft, which unite to clean the bottom of a can.
Some modification of the method of uniting the arms and the springs maybe employed and the same result be secured. I haveshown but two brushes; but more than two may be attached to one shaft, if desired.
I claim- 1. The central shaft, A, having pivoted to it two or more sets of arms, carrying brushes, moved outwardly by pressing down said shaft, and adapted, by adjustable mechanism, to fill cans ofdifferent diameters, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the shaft A, armsB, and brushes (1, the said arms having the slots E and carrying the springs G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. V
3. In combination with the shaft A, carryin g the arms and brushes, substantially as described and shown, the sections M and N, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN K. ODELL.
