The object of the present invention is a holdfast or a vise of the kind having a jaw rigidly attached to a guide or the like and a jaw movable along the guide and adapted to be pressed against the first-mentioned jaw by means of a lever provided with an eccentric or the like. The holdfast according to the invention is particularly characterized in that the movable jaw is arranged on a sliding block movable along the guide and adapted to be clamped by means of the lever, the sliding block grasping the guide by means of legs which are elastic relatively to each other and project into a hole of the lever having such a shape that the legs are moved in a direction against each other and are clamped against the guide when the lever is swung from a position in which the sliding block slides freely on the guide, the lever being adapted upon said clamping and when being further swung, to press the movable jaw against the stationary jaw by means of the eccentric.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying. drawings. Fig. 1 is a front view of a holdfast arranged in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Figs.. 3 and 4. are sectional views on the line 3--3. of Fig. 2 and show the movable jaw, the sliding block and the lever of the holdfast, in two different, positions. Fig. 5 is a partly sectional, elevation on the line 5-5 of Fig. 6 and shows a. modification of the invention. Fig. 6 is a. plan view of the holdfast in Fig. 5. Around the legs 23 is journalled a hub 24 of a 5 9 will engage the face 21a of the movable jaw lever 25. A hole 26 in the hub 24 is eccentric relatively to the outer cylindrical face of the hub and is disposed in such a manner, that, in the position of the lever shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the distance between the hole 26 and a face 21 of the jaw I8 is a minimum. The lever is in this position parallel with the guide l1, and by swinging the lever to the right or left the outer cylindrical face of the hub 24 will be pressed against the face 21 of the jaw I8 so that the jaw is moved against the fixed jaw 16.
The legs 23 have cylindrical outer surfaces which are concentric when the legs are unstrained. Around the legs there is a groove 28 in which extends the rounded end of the lever 25 which is threaded and inserted in a threaded hole 29 in the hub 24. The cross section of V the groove 28 is adapted to the rounding of the end of the lever. From Fig, '7 it will be obvious that the groove 28 has a recess 30 which is arranged to receive the end of the lever when the lever is in the shown position.
By swinging the lever 25 from the aforesaid position the end of the lever will be pressed against the shallow part of the groove 28 and thus cause the legs 23 to move against each other whereby the slot between the legs is closed more or less and the slidin block is clamped around the guide. In consequence of the eccentric disposal of the hole 26 for the legs 23 the cylindrical outer face of the hub 24 at the same time is pressed against the face 21 so that the jaw I8 is moved against the jaw it. During the first portion of the swinging movement of the lever 25, the block portion will be firmly clamped to the guide l1, while the jaw I8 is slightly pressed against an article between the jaws l6 and I8. Thereupon, further swinging of the lever causes the jaw It to be firmly pressed against the article.
It is evident that, by screwing the lever in the hub 24 to the right or left, the end of the lever can be brought in every desired radial position relatively to the groove 28, so as to vary the clamping force exerted by the legs on the guide.
The lever-bar 25 is fixed to the hub by means of a stop-nut 3| which is arranged to be pressed against the hub.
In the device shown in Figs. 5 to 7 the lever may be immovably attached to the hub, while a separate screw may be arranged to engage the legs 23. The screw may for example be disposed in the hub opposite the lever 25. It is not necessary that the outer cam-face of the hub be cylindrical but it can have any desired form, for instance the face may be formed in such a manner that the length of movement of the jaw l8 will be shorter by swinging the lever in one direction than in the other direction from the position shown in the drawing. An embodiment including such modifications is illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9. In this instance the handle 25a of the lever is integral with the hub portion 24a. The non-circular portions of the legs 23a of the block are engaged by an abutting member 32 inserted into a recess 33 in the portion 24a. An adjustable screw 34 threaded into a radial bore in the portion 24a maintains the member 32 in desired radial position. It will be evident that in the latter case a smaller force has to be applied to the lever to exert a given pressure upon the jaw [8a. It will further be evident that the purpose of the member 32 is the same as that of the inner end of the handle 25 according to Figs. 5 and 6.
It is obvious that the specific surface pressure between the co-operating faces should be as small as possible. The form and dimensions of the faces therefore ought to be adapted to the loads, for which the holdfast is intended.
What I claim is:
1. A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said lever having a pivot aperture and a cam spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, a block slidably mounted on said guide, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs projectin into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, and cooperating means on said lever and legs to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.
2. A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said lever having a pivot aperture and a cam spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, a block slidably mounted on said guide, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs which are substantially semi-circular in cross-section and project into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, and cooperating faces on said lever and legs to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung in either direction from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung in the same direction, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.

A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said lever having a pivot aperture and two cams spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, a block slida'oly mounted on said guide, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs which are substantially semi-circular in cross-section and project into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, and cooperating faces on said lever and legs to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung in either direction from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, one of said cams on said lever, upon said lever being further swung in the same direction, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.

A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said lever having a pivot aperture and a cam spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, a block slidable on said guide together with the movable jaw and with the possibility of a slight movement on the guide relative to the movable jaw, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs projecting into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, and cooperating means on said lever and legs to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.

A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said lever having a pivot aperture and a member extending into and radially adjustable relative to said aperture, a cam integral with said lever and spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, a block slidably mounted on said guide, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs projecting into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, and means on said legs cooperating with said member to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.

A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said lever having a pivot aperture and a member extending into and radially adjustable relative to said aperture, a cam integral with said lever and spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, a block slidably mounted on said guide, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs projecting into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, said legs having recessed portions eccentric to said aperture and cooperating with said member to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.
E. holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw, said portions having legs projecting into the level" aperture to pivotally mount the lever, said legs having recessed portions eccentric to said aperture and cooperating with the inner end of said lever to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.
8. A holdfast comprising a stationary jaw, a guide rigidly attached to said jaw, a jaw movable along said guide, a lever adapted to press said movable jaw toward said stationary jaw; said lever having a pivot aperture, a cam spaced from said aperture and eccentric thereto, and a threaded radial bore opening into said aperture; a screw in said bore, a block slidably mounted on said guide, and means to clamp said block to said guide by pivotal movement of said lever, said means comprising spaced resilient block portions having legs projecting into the lever aperture to pivotally mount the lever, the outer faces of said legs being non-circular in crosssection, and a member inserted between the inner end of said screw and said legs to move the legs toward each other and thereby clamp the resilient block portions against said guide when the lever is swung from its inoperative position in which the block slides freely on the guide, the cam on said lever, upon said lever being further swung, pressing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.
