M. SHRIER TOY MILKING COW Jan. 2, 1951 Filed May 29, 1948 INVENTOR. MARTIN SHRIER BY ATTOPNEYS Patented Jan. 2, 1 951 TOY MILKING COW Martin 'Shrier, Forest Hills; N. Y.,: assignor to Ideal Novelty &,Toy 00., Hollis, N. Y., a corporation of New York;
Application May 29, nascent. 30,069
. 1 My'invention relates to a new and improved toy device in the form of a cow. 'I t isfthe prncipal object of my invention to provide a toy cow which has an internal liquid summer, and which can be milked in the same manner as a live cow.
' Another object of my invention is the provision of a stufied toy cow which has a realistc appearanoe and in which water or other liquid can be stored and dispensed by manipulation of an udder. p
l A further object of my invention is the provision of a toy cow of the character described which is made of a soft outer material file with a resilient stufling which can be used as a bedtoy' by children with no sharp or metallic parts e se ,These and other objects of -my invention will be readily apparent in the course of the following specification takenin connecton with the accompanying drawings'inwhich:
Fig. 1 is a sideelevation ofthe toy cow with the center portion thereofa'nd'the liquid con- :ta'ine'r shown insection';
. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the liquid container, and its attached udder'member; and
is a top plan view of the liquid container .deviceshown in Fig. 2.
1 According to my invention. I'provide a toy cow,
designated generaly as reference numerallfl, -said toy cow having'an' outer covering made of plush, or other softm'ateral. The said, toy. cow
'illisfilled-"with a suitable stoning l l composed of kapok, cotton, straw or other suitable material. The toy cow H! has a top wall l2 and a bottom wall l3.
Located vertically within the body of the toy cow ID, a cylindrical tube i4 is provided, said tube being preferably made of al minum. pastic, or other non-corrosive rigid material. The said tube I4 is open at both its upper and lower ends. Over the top end of the said cylindrical tube It, a stud shaped filling member I5 is fitted. This filling member is preferably made of latex, although it may be made of plastic or any other bendable and resilient material. I The lower end of the filling member is stretched over the upper open end of the cylindrical tube 14, and is frictionally held thereupon. In addition, to further secure the filling member i5 to the cylindrical tube M, a suitable adhesive may be used if desired. The upper flange l5a of said filling member I5 is prov ded with a narrow .sit l6, the function of which will be presently described.
The open bottom end of the cylinder I4 is 4 Claims. (cue-. 123) Y covered by a dispensing member ll, said member I1 being made of the same flexible material the filling member [5. The dispensing member ll has an upper flange l3 and an udder-shaped lower portion I9, said lower portion 19 beingof greater diameter than thecylinder M. The upper flange l8 stretches over the bottom end ofthe cylinder 14 and is'held thereon'by friction. The upper flange iii of the dispensing member I! may likewise be secured to cylinder" M by an adhesive. The udder-shaped lower portion 19 ofdispens ing member I! is provided with a plurality of integral depending nipples 20. Each of said nipples is provided with a minute hole or recess :2l at theibottom'edge thereof. A hole or recess is cut in the bottom wall-l3 of the toy cow ID. The upper wall 12 of said toy cow is preferably stitched transversely'along the center; The cylinder It with its attached filling member i5 and dispensing. ircmber i1. is inserted within the body of the toy cow prior to the time that the two halves of the upper wall l2 are stitched together. When inserted, the bottom edge of the cylinder M. fits snugly within the" hole or recess in the bottom "wall I 3 of the toy cowand is. flush wth said bottom wall l3. The topwall l2 of the toy cow lfi'is' then stitched transversely, and around'the'filling member l5, thus leaving only the upper flange l5a of said filling. memberprotruding from the bodyof the toy cow; In its inserted positionythe uddershaped lower portion l9 ofv dispensing member il depznds from the bottom wall 13 of theto'y cow, the upper edge of said dispensing member abutt ng the outer edge of said bottom wall l3. The stufiing II which reinforces the body of the cow, maintains the cylinder in its upright position, and affords stability thereto. In use, the liquid container may be filled by inserting the end of an eye-dropper into thesllt I6 in the upper flange l5a of the filling member [5. When the eye-dropper is removed, the flexible and resilient character of the filling member l5 causes the slit ltto close to such an extent that the liquid contained in the cylinder, does not flow from the filling member [5, when the toy cow is inverted. As shown. in Fig. 1, the liquid is stored in the udder-shaped lower portion I9 of dispenser I1 and in the cylinder 14. The holes in the bottom of the nipples 20 are of such a small diameter that a liquid with the consistency of milk will be retained in the udder by capillary. action without leaking through the said holes. When the liquid is. to be dispensed, the udder-shaped member I9 is dispensing device through said stufied body, said device comprisgrasped and squeezed as shown in Fig. 1, the liquid being forced through the holes 21 in the nipples 20 in streams. It will be noted that the only exposed portions of the device are the flange I511 of the flexible, filling member l5 and the flexible udder portion l9 of the dispensing member 11. The toy cow may therefore be safely used as a bed-toy for infants, without danger of harm to the child through handling of sharp or metallic parts.
While a preferred embodiment of my invention has been shown and described, it is obvious that numerous additions, omissions and substitutions may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
I claim:

hollow upper portion until said hollow upper portion is compressed.
2. In a toy cow having a stufied body, a liquid which extends vertically ing a: rigid reservoir member which is open at both ends, a flexible and resilient filling member attached to and closing off the top end of said reservoir member, and a flexible and resilient udder-shaped dispensing -member attached to and closing oil the bottom end of said reservoir, said reservoir member being wholly contained within the stuffed body, said filling member and dispensing member protruding respectively from the upper and lower surfaces of said stufied body, said filling member having a narrow slit in its upper Wall which is normally closed, said dispensing member comprising a 7 Number hollow hemispherical liquid container which abuts the bottom outer surface of the toy cow body and communicates with said reservoir member, said container having a plurality of hollow nipples, having holes sufficiently small to retain the contained liquid within said container, said container being compressiblewhereby to force said liquid through the holes in said nipples.
3. In a toy cow having a stuffed body, a liquid dispensing device which extends vertically through said stuffed body, said device comprising a rigid reservoir member which is open at both ends and is completely enclosed within the stufied bodyrof said toy cow, a flexible and resilient filling member having a lower integral collar which frictionally fits over and closes oi! the upper end of said reservoir member and an uppe'nfienlarged, fiat top-piece which is locatedadjacent to and abutting the outer top surface of said stuiied body, said top-piece having a planar upper surface containing a narrow slit which is normally closed by the resilience of said top-piece, and a resilient and compressible dispensing member having an integral collar secured to the bottom end of said reservoir member, said dispensing member having a hollow udder-shaped container which depends from the bottom surface of said stuffed body, said udder-shaped container having a plurality of integral depending nipples which contain holes sufliciently small to retain the contained liquid until said uddershaped container is compressed.
4. A liquid dispensing device according to claim 10, in which the rigid reservoir member is cylindrical, and in which the udder-shaped container has an upper wall of greater diameter than said reservoir member, said upper wall abutting the lower surface of said stufied body.
