Description

April 1939- E. G SCHAEFFER DOLL Filed July 16 1957 INVENTOR. form/w 6: $0M EFFER ampe ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 25, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOLL Application July 16, 1937, Serial No. 153,985
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in dolls and While not necessarily restricted thereto, has particular reference to a doll having a soft or stuffed body and which doll is so constructed and arranged as to be capable of receiving the flow of liquid through the mouth thereof and the gradual discharge of the fluid through the lower part of the body.
The invention has for an object the provision in a doll of the indicated character, of means for preventing the counter-flow of the liquid from the body into the head of the doll and the seeping of the same into the stufiing in the body while permitting of the gradual egress of the liquid through the lower portion of the body thereof.
The invention more particularly resides in the provision of an elongated tubular element protruding from the upper end of the doll body about which the upper portion of the body casing is secured, and inwardly directed means extending into the said tubular element and sealed about the upper end thereof for preventing the counter-flow of the liquid received in the tubular element by a conduit connected with the mouth of the doll and protruding through said means, and a closure sealing the lower end of the tubular element and to which the lower portion of the body casing is secured, said closure having an outlet for permitting of the slow egress of the liquid.
With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is made to the following specification and accompanying drawing illustrating. the preferred embodiment of? the invention, while the claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a doll constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating a nursing bottle associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the doll body taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a closure plug for the lower end of the liquid container.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference as disclosed in the form of the invention illustrated by way of example, I0 designates a doll of the type which comprises a stufied body I I, arm and leg members I2 and I3 respectively, and a head l4 constructed of hard composition or rubber or other equivalent material.
The head I4 is provided with a neck opening l5 adapted to receive the neck portion l6 of a breast element H and to seat thereupon for articulated movement with reference to the body. 8
The breast element I1 is secured by any desired means, such as by adhesive over the upper portion of the body II and is provided with an opening l8 in the neck portion l6 thereof through which extends a rod l9 having a hooked upper end which swingably engages the cross bar 20 fixed at its opposite ends to the head of the doll. The rod I9 is provided with an en larged lower terminal 2| which engages a washer 22 between which washer and the upper end of the neck portion a conical expansion spring 23 is arranged in surrounding relation to the rod [9 so as to connect the head with the breast element for articulated movement.
The body ll preferably includes a flexible waterproof casing 24, such as rubberized fabric, and is provided with a longitudinally extending tubular member 25 which protrudes through the upper end thereof and about which the upper portion of the casing 24 is secured in any desired manner such as by gathering the upper end of the casing by a wire or equivalent means 26.
The lower end of the tubular member 25 has fitted therein a closure plug 21 having an external stud portion 28 provided with an enlarged head 29 at its outer end and forming a marginal recess 30 in which recess the lower portion of the casing 24 is secured in any desired manner such as by gathering the same thereabout by means of a wire 3|.
An inwardly directed funnel-shaped member 32 has its upper enlarged end sealed about the upper end of the tubular member 25 and extends downwardly thereinto. The head I4 is provided with a mouth opening 33, which mouth opening has connected therewith a conduit 34 extending through the opening I 8 of the neck portion l6, thence through the convolutions of the expansion spring 23, the washer 22 and protruding through the restricted inner end of the funnel-shaped member 32 for conveying liquid received through the mouth opening into the tubular member 25. The funnel-shaped member 32 prevents counterflow of the liquid received by the compartment defined within the member 25 and precludes the entrance of the liquid into the head of the doll.
The closure plug 2'! is provided with an outlet port 35 extending therethrough and through the stud portion for permitting egress of the 55 liquid received in the compartment defined in the tubular member 25.
The casing 24 is maintained in body formation by stufiiing 36 arranged between the outer surface of the tubular member 25 and the inner surface of the casing 24.
What is claimed is:
1. In a doll, a head having a mouth opening, a stuffed body provided with an outer casing, a tubular member extending longitudinally thereof protruding from the upper end of the doll body and about which the upper portion of the casing is secured, an element sealed aboutthe upper endof said tubular member having a restricted opening therein, a conduit extending from the mouth opening through said opening in said element for conveying liquid received through the mouth opening into said tubular member, said element preventing the counterflow of the liquid from said tubular member into the head of the doll, and a closure for the lower end of said tubular member about which the lower portion of said doll casing is secured, said closure having an outlet for permitting the escape of the liquid received in said tubular member.
2. In a doll, a head having a mouth opening, a stuffed body provided with an outer casing, a tubular member extending longitudinally thereof and about which the upper portion of the casing is secured, an element sealed about the upper end of said tubular member extending into said tubular member and having a restricted opening at its inner end, a conduit extending from the mouth opening and protruding through said restricted opening in said element for conveying the liquid received in the mouth opening into said tubular member, said element preventing the counterflow of the liquid from said tubular member into the head of the doll, and a closure for the lower end of said tubular member about which the lower portion of said doll casing is secured, said closure having an outlet for permitting the escape of the liquid received in said tubular member.
3. In a doll, a head having a mouth opening, a stuffed body provided with an outer casing, a tubular member extending longitudinally of the doll body and protruding from the upper end thereof and about which the upper portion of the casing is secured, an inwardly directed tubular conical member sealed about the upper end of said tubular member, a conduit extending from the mouth opening and protruding through said tubular conical member for conveying liquid received in the mouth opening into said tubular member, said conical member preventing the counterflow of the liquid from said tubular member into the head of the doll, a closure plug for the lower end of said tubular member, said closure plug having an external reduced stud with an enlarged terminal providing a marginal recess in which recess the lower portion of the body casing is secured, and an outlet in said closure plug for permitting the escape of the liquid received in said tubular member.
4. In a doll, a head having a mouth opening, a body provided with a tubular member extending longitudinally of the body and forming a liquid receiving compartment, a funnel shaped member closing the upper end of said compartment and extending inwardly therefrom for preventing the counterfiow of the liquid from the compartment into the head of the doll, a conduit extending from the mouth opening and protruding through said funnel shaped member for conveying liquid received through the mouth opening into said compartment, and said tubular member being closed at its lower end and having a liquid outlet for permitting the escape of the liquid from said compartment.
