Application January 2, 1947, Serial No. 719,804
3 Claims. l
This invention relates to improvements in a device for washing vegetables and the like.
It is a primary object of the invention to provide means whereby vegetables or other material requiring washing may be suspended for pendular movement beneath a stream of running Water for convenient manipulation of the work through the stream witho-ut requiring the operator manually to support the washing device or the work.
More specifically stated, it is an object of the invention to provide a foraminous basket or the like with flexible supporting means whereby the basket may be suspended froma conventional faucet or faucets in a manner permitting the basket and its contents to be moved about with respect to a stream of water.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following disclosure thereof:
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective showing the device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation showing the device suspended from a pair of faucets.
Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation showing the device suspended from the spout of a double faucet.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modiiied, and in many respects, a preferred, device embodying the invention.
The foraminous basket 5 may be woven of wire as shown or may be made in any other desired manner to provide support for the work while affording openings for the escape of water and foreign matter washed from the work by the water. The details of its form and construction are immaterial to the present invention, but it preferably has some form of handles, the portions 6 of the top wire at the opposite ends of the basket serving the function of handles in the present device.
The basket is provided with flexible means for its suspension. Such means preferably comprises the strands 'i of chain, but any other flexible Suspenders may be used. The Suspenders are preferably in the form of closed loops, the chain having both ends connected to the top of the basket.
Where the device is to be used with two separate faucets 3 and 9, one of the loops 1 may be engaged over each faucet as shown in Fig. 2. The length and exibility of the Suspenders l is such as to permit the full length of the basket 5 and its contents to be passed beneath either of the faucets by simply swinging the basket from 2 side to side, as indicated by its full and dotted line positions.
Where a double faucet is used having a single discharge spout Ill (or where any single faucet is involved) both Suspenders may be hooked over the same support as indicated in Fig. 3, the support in that instance comprising the base of spout lll. It will be apparent that it is easily possible for the operator to grasp the basket and swing it from side to side beneath the stream of water issuing from the spout lll, whereby all portions of the contents of the basket may be subjected to the full force of the water.
Particularly where the material to be washed is relatively fine and might be forced by the stream of water through the rather coarse reticulations of the wire basket 5 shown in Fig. 1, I may employ the basket shown in Fig. 4 which is made of sheet metal punched full of holes to provide the necessary openings for the escape of water and sand and the like. In such a basket, I preferably provide separate handles 60 pivoted to the top rim of the basket 50. The flexible suspending means l is identical to that already described.
While the device is useful for any washing or rinsing operations in the kitchen, it has particular utility in the cleaning of vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, lettuce, spinach and so forth.
I claim:
l. A kitchen utensil comprising a foraminous basket and freely flexible supporting means therefor, said supporting means being freely yieldable in all directions and of such length that when connected with a sink faucet, the basket will be suspended for free oscillation.
2. A kitchen utensil comprising a foraminous basket provided at spaced points with a plurality of looped supporting members freely flexible in all directions, each such member having a plurality of laterally spaced points of connection with the basket, the said members collectively being adapted to support the basket in equilibrium and being of such length that when the looped members are hung from kitchen faucet means, the basket will be supported for free oscillatory movement.
3. A device adapted to be suspended from one or more faucets for kitchen use, said device comprising an elongated basket having foraminous side and end walls and flexible suspending means looped for faucet connection and attached to end in equilibrium against the dumping oi? its con- 3 tents. lthe said basket being wholly dependent upon said suspending means for support, and the said ysuspending means beingffof such length that when they are faucetfengaged, the basket is carried free of an underlyngsink for oscillation beneath the faucet foi the washing of its contentsv in a stream of Water owing from the faucet. f
