s claims. (o1. irse-aras) This invention relates to improvements in shuttles used in looms.
Shuttles are generally made with a shuttle chamber of xed dimensions which 'therefore accommodate acop of only one diameter.
Commercially cops frequently vary in diameter, hence some cops cannot be used in the shuttles forywhich they were wound.
Theobject of 'this in'vtiifis'a'luttleadapted to compensate for Variances in cop diameter.
Another object is a shuttle in which the chamber wall determines the size of the chamber.
Other objects will appear from the detailed description which follows.
In the drawings comprising two sheets of seven figures numbered Figs. 1 to '7, inclusive:
Fig. l is a top view of a shuttle embodying one form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a back elevation of the shuttle of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the shuttle of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross-sectional View of the shuttle taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 5--5 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are cross-sectional views of interchangeable closure panels.
Like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several gures of the drawings.
The shuttle 2U which is fabricated of hard wood is tapered at its opposite ends 2| and 22. The bed 23 of the shuttle, the side wall 44, and the tapered ends 2| and 22 form one continuous piece constituting a partial closure for the chamber 45 of the shuttle which houses a cop (not shown).
The side wall 44 is provided with an eye 24 through which the cop thread may be threaded, and a groove 25 for accommodating the thread as the shuttle travels across the loom. The inner face of the side wall 44 is provided with spaced corrugations 26-26 and the bed 23 is similarly provided with spaced corrugations 21-21 which cooperate to hold a cop xed in the chamber.
The well 33 accommodates a roller assembly 28 which facilitates free passage of the cop thread through the eye 24. A spring 29 is pivoted uponV a pin 30 to swing clear of the mouth of the chamber thus allowing a cop to be inserted in the shuttle chamber 45. The upper pin 3| and lower pin 32 are imbedded in the forward end of the shuttle as shown thus constituting a locking de- Vice for the spring 29 which when so positioned 2 p'rfeveil'ts ejection of a `lcop from the shuttle chamber.

The back wall 34 is recessed at 42 and 43 to receive the opposite ends of the interchangeable closure panels 35, 36, and 3l, the outer faces of said closure panels being flush with the outer face of the back wall 34.
As illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, and '7, the closure panels 35, 36, and 3l vary in thickness thus varying the width of the shuttle chamber 45 to accommodate cops of diierent diameters dependent upon the thickness of the closure panel employed.
The closure panels 35, 36, and 3l may be secured in any suitable manner as by means of the bolts and nuts 46 and 41.
The interchangeable panels 35, 36, and 3l are corrugated at 48, 49, and 5D; these corrugations cooperate with the corrugations 26 and 2l to hold a cop fixed in the chamber of the shuttle.
What is claimed is:
1. A shuttle having a back wall, said back wall of said shuttle being cut away to form an opening, a closure for said opening, said closure forming the back wall of said shuttle, the outer face of said closure being ush with the face of the remainder of the back wall of the shuttle, and said closure including a key for securing said closure in said opening.
2. A shuttle having a back wall, a substantial section of said back wall of said shuttle constituting a removable and replaceable panel, and a key for holding said panel in proper position.
3. A shuttle having a back wall and a bed, a substantial section of said back wall of said shuttle constituting a removable and replaceable i E outer face of said closure is ush with the face of the remainder of the back wall of the shuttle.
5. A shuttle having a back wall and a bed, a substantial section of said back wall of said shuttle including one of a plurality of removable and replaceable panels of diierent thicknesses, the bed of said shuttle having a groove formed therein, and each panel being keyed to said groove to position and hold said panel iiush with the face of the back wall of said shuttle.
6. A shuttle having a back wall, said back wall of said shuttle being cut away to form an opening, a closure for said opening, the bed of the shuttle having a groove formed therein, and a tongue extending from the lower end of said closure and cooperating with said groove to position said closure in said opening.
'7. A shuttle having a bed, ends, and one side wall formed in one continuous piece t0 dene a partial closure for a chamber in the shuttle, an opposite side wall, a substantial section of said opposite side Wall being cut away to form an opening, a closure for said opening, said closure when positioned in said opening completing the other side wall of said chamber, the outer face of said closure being ush with the outer face of the remainder of the side wall of which it forms a part, and Said closure including a key detachably securing said closure in said opening.
8. A shuttle having a bed, ends, and one side wall formed in one continuous piece to define a partial closure for the chamber of the shuttle, an opposite side wall, a substantial section of said opposite side wall being cut away to form an opening, a closure for said opening, one edge face of said closure and one edge face of said opening being respectivelytongued and grooved to interlock when said closure correctly registers in said opening to complete the other side wall of said chamber, the outer face of said closure being flush with the outer face of the remainder oi the side wall of which it forms a part, and screws detachably securing said closure in said opening` THOMAS B.
