PROCESS OF AND APPARATUS FOR APPLYING WATERPROOFING MATERIAL.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT M. OAFFALL, ofSt.Louis, in the eouutyof St. Louis and State ofMissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of and Apparatus for Applying Waterproofing Material; and I do hereby declare. that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan yin gdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved process of and apparatus'for applying waterproofing and preserving compounds to the walls of buildings, as will be hereinafter fully described with reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improved apparatus complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lamp and vessel for heating the compound, andFig. 4is a view of the fire-cage detached. Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
Arepresentsascaffolchadapted to besuspended and adjusted in the usual manner by means of pulleys and tackle upon the building to be treated, and consisting of the stirrups B, floor O, and side guards, D. The stirrups are provided with arms or brackets E, connected by a rail, F. G G are uprights secured to railF and to one of the side guards, and having brackets or hooks H. Hooks I are also arranged upon the under side of the scaffold.
J is an apparatus for heating the waterproofing and preserving compound. Said apparatus consists of a casing, K, having a. door, L, at its lower end, through which a lamp, M, may be conveniently inserted or removed. In the casing and resting upon its upper edge is placed a flanged vessel, N, to hold the compound, and the casing is provided near its upper and lower end with draft openings or apertures O.
P is a box or cage, made of sheet metal or other suitable material, and having its front side perforated or made of stout, coarse wire screening, to hold a charcoal fire. Box P has a cover, Q, and a bail or handle, R. Several of the cages P, containing burning coals, are to be suspended upon the hooks H I, adjoining the wall of the building upon which the scaffold is suspended, thus heating said wall above and below the scaffold, upon which the heating apparatus J is also placed.
The operation is follows: The compound, which may be a composition of paraffine, turpentine, and creosote patented to me on August 10, 1880, is placed in the vessel N and heated until it melts. In the meantime a-portion of the wall becomes heated by the fire contained in the cages P. When the compound is perfectly fluid it is applied, preferably by means ot'an ordinarypaint-brush, to the heated surface of the wall, which thus roadilyabsorbs the compound. While this is being done the portion of the wall just below the scaffold is being heated by the tire contained in the cages suspended upon hooks I, so that on lowering the scaffold the workmen may proceed with the application of the compound without loss of time. At the same time, by lowering the scaffold the fire-cages suspended upon the hooks H are brought opposite the portion of the wall to which the compound has just been applied, thus serving to drive the compound into the pores of the building material.
I would state that while the fire-cages P, arranged as herein de cribed, are most desirable, suitable blow-pipes or other heating apparatus may bcsubstituted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The process of treating the wallsof buildin'gs with waterproofing and preserving compounds, which consists in first heating the wall, next applying the compound in a fluid and heated state, and, finally, reheating the wall to cause the complete absorption of the compound, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
.2. The scaffold A, having stirrups B, provided with brackets E, side guards, D, railF, uprights G, having hooks H, and the books I, in combination with the fire-cages P, suspended upon the hooks H I, above and below the scaffold, as described, for the purpose set forth.
