This invention relates, to thread cutter die: heads; and has for its object to provide means by which the dies may be; simultaneously moved radially ortt of work. engaging position during operation.

A connection is provided between the handwheel ill and, the cam ill for imparting turning movements to the cam E8 to, simultaneously disengage the dies from the work during operation of the machine. The cam i8 is provided with a radially outwardly projecting portion 25' that is limited angular movement with respect to the cam l3. Theconnection between the link 26 and the handwheel H3 is such that the link 26 swings about its pivot during a relative turning movement of the handwheel and; camandithis pivotal movement of the is utilized to release a locking connection between the cam l8 and the body I of the head.
As herein shown the lost motion between the handwheel and cam is provided by means of a laterally projecting pin 28 carried by the link 2E and projecting into an elongated slot 29 in the handwheel it. The slot 29 is provided with a face 39 at one side edge thereof that is inclined with respect to its path of circumferential travel and that acts upon the pin 28 to impart an angular movement to the link 26. The link 25 is pivoted intermediate its ends and the portion thereof on the side of the pivot El opposite that carrying the pin 28 has a locking projection 3| projecting radially inwardly therefrom that is adapted to engage in the aperture M in the ring H. When the dies 3? are in operative position the locking projection 32 engages in the aperture Hi of the ring ii to hold the cam [8 against turning movements with respect to the body 1 of the head.
The member 25 is yieldably held in its locking position and is moved to the releasing position shown in Fig. 5 when the handwheel I6 is turned upon the body 7 in a direction to engage the inclined cam face 38 with the pin 28. The handwheel l has a radially disposed boss 32 on its outer face that is provided with a radial bore 33 in which is mounted a radially movable plunger 34 that has a rounded inner end. bearing upon the outer edge of the member 25. The plunger 34 has a stem 35 of reduced diameter which extends outwardly and that is guided in a threaded plug 36 in the outer end of the bore The plunger 34 is pressed inwardly against the member 26 by a coil spring 3'! surrounding the stem 35 and interposed between the plunger 34 and the plug 36.
As shown in the drawings, the dies I! have their cutting faces 38 facin counter-clockwise and the handwheel cam 36 is so disposed with respect to the connecting member 26 that the member 26 is swung in a direction to release the locking projection SI and to actuate the cam IS in a direction to release the dies I? from the work upon movement of the handwheel I i] on the body I of the head in a clockwise direction. During the thread cutting operation the head is rotated counter-clockwise with the cam locked as shown in Fig. 1. If during the threading operation it is desirable to discontinue the cutting operation the operator simply grasps the handwheel l0, retarding its rotation and causing it to turn in a clockwise direction with respect to the body I of the head. This turning movement to the handwheel engages the cam face 30 with the pin 28 and swings the connecting member 26 in a direction to move the locking projection 3| outwardly against the action of the spring 31. When the pin 28 reaches the inner end of the slot 29 the member 26 will be moved to a position Where the locking projection 3! is released from the ring I l as shown in Fig. and the cam l8 will be connected through the member 26 to the handwheel for turning movement therewith. Further clockwise turning movement of the handwheel ill will impart a corresponding turning movement to the cam I8 which will simultaneously shift the dies i7 out of work engaging position. The extent of turning movement of the cam is limited by the stop lug IE on the ring H which is in the path of the connecting member 26, permitting an angular movement of the cam I8 suincient to disengage the dies from the work. The dies I! may be reset to Work engaging position by a counterclockwise turning movement of the handwheel ID.
The radial adjustment of the dies I! for operation on workpieces of different diameters is effected by circumferential adjustments of the ring H by means of the bolts I3 and slots l2. The position to which the locking recess M on the body I is adjusted determines the positions of the cam ribs 23 with respect to the dies when the cam rin is locked by engagement of the projection 3| in the aperture I4. In all positions of angular adjustment of the ring II the handwheel ID and cam iii are permitted the same relative turning movement, since the stop lug I5 is adjusted'with the locking recess 14 and is always at the same angular distance from the looking recess I4.
It is to be understood that in accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, variations and modifications of the specific devices herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention,
What I claim is:
1. A die head comprising a body portion adapted for attachment to a rotary spindle and having circumferentially spaced sockets that converge toward its axis for slidably receiving thread cutting dies, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted in said head and having circumferentially extendin die engaging portions inclined in the same direction with respect to their circumferential path of travel to move the dies simultaneously toward or away from the head axis, a handwheel extending around the periphery of the head and mounted to turn thereon, a 10st motion connection between said handwheel and cam permitting a small relative angular movement of the handwheel with respect to said cam, and means for releasably locking said cam to said body portion to positively hold said cam against turning movements with respect to said body portion of the head comprising a movable member operably connected to said cam and handwheel to be moved into and out of its cam locking position by relative angular movements of said handwheel and cam.
2. A die head comprising a body portion adapted for attachment to a rotary spindle and having circumferentially spaced sockets that converge toward its axis for slidably receiving thread cutting dies, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted in said head and having circumferentially extending die engaging portions inclined in the same direction with respect to their circumferential path of travel to move the dies simultaneously toward or away from the head axis, a handwheel extending around the periphery of the head and mounted to turn thereon, a lost motion connection between said handwheel and cam includ ing an angularly movable connecting link, and locking means actuated by said link for holding said cam against turning movements with respect to said body portion of the head.

A die head comprising a body portion adapted for attachment to a rotary spindle and having circumferentially spaced sockets that converge toward its axis for slidably receiving thread cutting dies, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted in said head and having circumferentially extending die engaging portions inclined in the same direction with respect to their circumferential path of travel to move the dies simultaneously toward or away from the head axis, a handwheel extending around the periphery of the head and mounted to turn thereon, a lost motion connection between said handwheel and cam including an angularly movable connecting link, and a latch member carried by said cam and operably connected to said link for movement into and out of locking engagement with said body portion of the head.

A die head comprising a body havin an inner end portion adapted for attachment to the end or a driving spindle and an outer end portion provided with angularly spaced sockets to receive thread cutting dies, a handwheel rotatably mounted on said body, a cam rotatably mounted on the body outwardly of said handwheel and having circumferentially spaced portions inclined in the same direction with respect to their path of circumferential travel for engagement with the thread cutting dies in said sockets to simultaneously move the same radially, a link having a pivotal connection to said cam and a pin and slot connection to said handwheel in which the slot is at an inclination to its circumferential path of travel whereby an angular movement is imparted to the link upon a turning movement of the handwheel with respect to said cam, and a locking member actuated by said link and movable into and out of a position in which it holds the cam against turning movements with respect to said body.

A die head comprising a body having an inner end portion adapted for attachment to a driving spindle and an outer end portion having angularly spaced sockets converging toward the axis of the head to slidabiy receive thread cutting dies, a cam rotatably mounted on said body and having an inwardly extending portion overlying the outer end or said body, said inwardly extending portion of the cam having circumferentially extending ribs projecting from its inner face into said sockets for engagement with said dies, said ribs being all inclined in the same direction with respect to their circumferential path of travel to simultaneously move said dies toward or away from the axis of said head, a handwheel rotatably mounted on said body inwardly of said head, a lost motion connection between said handwheel and cam including a link pivoted to said cam to swing radially and a cam carried by said handwheel for imparting angular movements to said link upon relative turning movements of said cam and handwheel, and a locking member operated by said link and movable from a position in which it holds the cam against turning movements with respect to said body to a position freeing the cam from said body.

A die head comprising a body portion having an inner end adapted for attachment to a driving spindle and an outer end formed to receive thread cutting dies, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted on said body, a handwheel rotatably mounted on said body and having a cam slot that is inclined with respect to its circumferential path or travel, and a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said cam to swing transversely to the axis of the head, said member having a laterally projecting pm at one end extending into said slot to provide a lost motion connection between said handwheel and cam and a locking portion at its opposite end engageable with said body to hold said cam against turning movements with respect to said body, whereby said locking portion is moved to releasing position upon actuation of the handwheel during the turning movement of the handwheel with respect to said cam that is permitted by said slot.

A die head comprising a body portion having an inner end adapted for attachment to a driving spindle and an outer end formed to receive thread cutting dies, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted on said body, a handwheel rotatably mounted on said body and having a cam slot that is inclined with respect to its circumferential path of travel, a ring rotatably mounted on said body between said handwheel and cam and provided with a recess, means for securing said ring to said body in various circumferential positions, a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said cam to swing radially, said member having a tooth at one end engageable in san recess and a pin at its opposite end extending into said cam slot, whereby said member is rocl about its pivot to release said tooth from said recess during the turning movement of the handwheel with respect to said cam permitted by said slot.
8. A die comprising a body portion having an inner end for attachment to a driving spindle and an outer end formed to receive thread cutting dies, a handwheel rotatably mounted on said body and having a cam slot that is inclined withrespect to its circumferential path or travel, a retaining ring rotatably mounted on body outwardly of said handwheel, said ring having an external recess and a projecting stop lug, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted on said body outwardly of said ring, means for securing said ring to said body in various, positions of circumferential adjustment, and a member positioned between said cam and handwheel and pivoted to said cam to swing toward and away from the axis of the head, said member having a tooth engageable in said recess, a pin projecting into said slot and a portion engageable with said stop lug to limit the turning movement of the cam with the handwheel.

A die head comprising a body portion having an inner end adapted for attachment to a driving spindle and an outer end formed to receive thread cutting dies, a handwheel rotatably mounted on said body and having a cam slot that is inclined with respect to its circumferential path of travel, a retaining ring rotatably mounted on said body outwardly of said handwheel, said ring having an external recess and a projecting stop lug, a die adjusting cam rotatably mounted on said body outwardly of said ring, means for securing said ring to said body in various positions of circumferential adjustment, a member positioned between said cam and handwheel and pivoted to said cam to swing toward and away from the axis of the head, said member having a tooth engageable in said recess, a pin projecting into said slot and a portion engageable with said stop lug to limit the turning movement of the cam with the handwheel, and a spring pressed member carried by said handwheel that slidably engages said member and exerts a radial pressure thereon to press said tooth inwardly toward its locking position.
