The invention may be regarded in part as an improvement over the threading die head shown in the patent to Victor R. Koontz 1,456,805, dated May 29, 1923.
The object of the invention is to provide a threading-head of a simplified design'which may be easily. adjustedfor thread of different size and which when locked in thread cutting position will be rigid so as to produce straight and accurate threads.
In the art of making screw threads there is an increasing demand for greater accuracy in the threads. one Object of this invention is to provide a die head in which-the thrust against the thread cutting elements is received against a rigid 20 portion of thehead so as to insure this high degree of accuracy in the thread.

The body member I0 is provided with slots II which form bearings in which the chaser holders ii slide. These slots may be angular in shape as 5 shown or may be any desired shape such as a T-slot. The body member ID. has a flanged portion I provided with slots i6 extending therethrough which slots terminate in the slots i4 and form openings for operating prongs i1 formed on 10 a closing ring 20. Theprong's ll extend through the flange l6 and into slots II in the chaser holders i I. It will be noted that said slots i8 are open throughout their length into 'theperipheral suriace oi the chaser holder, whereby they may be accurately ground iorcooperation with prongs l1, and being open they faciiitatein assemblying and provide for compactness of the die head so that it may be made small in diameter which is a decided advantage where it is necessary to employ the die headfin close spaces. The slots i5 have sides i9 which are finisl'iedto serve as guides or keys for positioning the closing ring!!! on the body member Hi. The flange II has a rearwardiy extending portion 2i which telescopesover a flange 38 of an operating ring 2] laterto be described and forms a sealiorpreventingthe entry of dirt into the worlring'units ot the head. The flange l8 and closing ring 20 are provided with sockets 22 and 50 respectively in which are seated springs 23 which serve to move the ring 20 ,rearwardly to open the die head. The body member ID is provided; with an extended portion 24 which serves for securing the die head to a rotatable support. The'ext'ended portion'fl'is not necessarily cylin- 3'5 drical, as shown, but may be provided with a flange orother standard means for attaching the die head to the operating spindle.
The body member III is threaded at 28 to receive a nut 26 which bears against a locking ring 21. 40 As will presently appear the nut 26 holds the locking ring 21 incorrect axial position and also determines the operating position of the closing ring 26. By adjusting the nut 26 the extent of openin of the chasers is determined so that the head 5 m ybe adjusted for cutting thread of different diameters. The nut 26 may be secured in ad- Justed position by locking screw 53.
The locking ring 21 as best shown in Figures 6 and 8 is provided'with ,abutments 28 which rideover abutme'ntsil. on the rear of the closing ring--26 when the die headfisin closed orv locked position. The locking ring 21 is provided with twospirai grooves or cam surfaces 30. Pins 32 fixed in the operating ring 3| engage these grooves. When the die head is in closed or locked position, as shown in Figures 8 and 9, the pins 32 are positioned at the largest opening of the spiral as shown in Figure 9. When the operating ring 3| is moved rearward in relation to the face of the die head the pins 32 bear against the side of the spiral grooves 30 and rotate the looking ring 21 so that the abutments 28 and 29 10 may slip over each other into mating relation to permit the closing ring 20 to be moved to the rear by means of the springs 23. This moves the chasers to the open position. The prongs H on the closing ring 20 are provided with keyways 34 which engage over projections 35 in the angular slots |8 in the chaser holders M. Keyways 34 and the projections 35 are parallel to the surface 35 as best shown in Figure 2. When the closing ring moves rearward therefore the chaser holders and the chasers are moved away from the work and at right angles to the axis of the work. The operating ring 3| may be moved rearward in relation to the face of the die head by any conventional means. The operating ring 3| is keyed to the closing ring 20 by means of a key 39 engaging the keyway 5| in the closing ring 20. The closing ring is positioned on the head body by means of the sides IQ of the irregular shaped slots l5 as stated above.
The key 33 prevents the operating ring 3| from rotating when the pins 32 ride against the sides of the spiral grooves 30 in the locking ring 21 when rotating the locking ring to unlocking position. When the operating ring 3| is moved 35 forward toward the face of the die head it forces the closing ring 28 forward by contacting against a surface on the closing ring. This action compresses the springs 23 and advances the closing ring far enough in the forward position to bring the abutments 23 out of sockets 4| in the rear of the closing ring. During a forward -move ment of the closing ring I1, the prongs force the chaser holder radially inward, the surfaces 36 at the bottom of slots iii in chaser holders I being in engagement with correspondingly inclined surfaces 38a on the prongs |1,--an inward movement of the chaser holders is effected thereby. During a thread cutting operation these cooperating surfaces of the prongs and chaser holders bear the outward thrust.
This arrangement of the closing ring prongs |1 through the inclined cooperating surfaces at the bottoms of slots la in the chaser holders for a closing and thrust engaging action during thread cutting operations, and the keys and keyway arrangement at the sides of the slots and prongs for outwardly retracting the chaser holders and chasers provides for a very compact construction which permits a more accurate machining of parts operated upon.
A spring 43 is seated in a socket 42 in the closing ring 20 and acts against a pin 44 to force this pin against an annular surface on the locking ring 21 to rotate the locking ring 21 into locked position when the abutments 28 are withdrawn from the sockets 4|. The action of springs 43 and pins 44 against angular surface 45 on locking ring 21 also prevents locking ring 21 from moving forward in relation to the adjusting ring 26 when head closing action takes place. The locking ring 21 is limited in its rotation by means of a key 46 positioned in '9. rectangular groove 48 in the locking ring 21 which key engages a side 41 of a recess 48 in the operating ring 2|.
The operation of the die head is as follows With the parts in the position shown in Figure 8 the die head is in closed or threading position in which position the abutment 28 on the locking ring engages the face of abutment 29 on the closing ring to hold the closing ring in its forward position against the tension of spring 23. The thread cutting elements are in their innermost radial or threading position. When thread of a predetermined length has been cut the operating ring 3| is moved rearwardly of the body member by any suitable mechanism, not shown. Such mechanism may engage the annular groove 52 of this ring. As the operating ring 3| is moved toward the rear the pin 32 engaging the spiral position. To restore the die head to the threading position operating ring 3| is moved forward of the body member by any suitable mechanism, not shown, and this operating ring contacts the closing ring at surface 40 and forces the closing ring forwardly of the body member. As soon as the closing ring has moved far enough forward to withdraw the abutment 28 from socket 4| the spring 43 urging pin 44 into engagement with the locking ring rotates it to bring the abutment 28 to an overlapping position in relation to abutment 29 on the closing ring. The closing ring is then locked in its forward position with the thread cutting elements in threading position. When in this position the thrust against the thread cutting chasers is delivered through the chaser holders, closing ring and locking ring against the locking nut 26, which insures a rigid support for the chasers and insures accurate threads.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A die head comprising a body member, a closing ring, an operating ring and a locking ring, adjustable means for holding said locking ring in axial position on the body member. and means between said closing ring and said locking ring for holding said locking ring against said adjustable means.
2. A die head comprising a body member, a closing ring, an operating ring, a locking ring and an adjusting ring, and resilient means between said closing ring and said locking ring for holding said locking ring against said adjusting ring.
3. A threading die head of the kind described having chaser holders and chasers mounted therein, said holders being operable to move the chasers into'and out of threading position, a closing ring mounted on said body member having means engageable with said chaser holders for moving them radially upon axial movement of the closing ring, a locking ring mounted on said body member, an adjustable ring mounted on said body member serving as a reaction abutment to the locking ring, said closing and loci:-
, ing rings having mating abutments adapted to be rotated into abutting relation with each other to hold the closing ring in forward position, means for moving said rings together upon displacement of said abutments to unmating position, a socket provided in one of said rings, a springin said socket, a pin guided in said socket and projected by said spring into engagement with an inclined surface on the other ring to yieldably impart a rotary movement between the rings, and to hold the locking ring against the adjusting ring, an operating ring mounted upon and supported only by said closing and said locking rings, said operating ring being keyed to the closing ring and having means engageable with the locking ring for rotating this said locking ring against said yieldable force to permit collapsing of the thread cutting elements.
4. A die head comprising a body, chasers on said body and movable between closed operative positions and open inoperative positions, a closing ring movable axially along said body andarr slidable engagement with the closing ring and the looking ring, said operating ring having meansfto rotate the locking ring into and out of locking position upon axial movement thereof and means engageable with the closing ring'to actuate the chasers into closed position, said body being provided with a peripheral skirt portion overlapping said operating ring.
5. A die head comprising a body member,.a
plurality of chaser holders slidably mountedon the body member, chasers mounted on said holdlers, a closing ring mounted on said bod k nemher and having means engageabie with means on the chaser holders for positively movingthe chasers to non-threading position upon nearward movement of said closing ring, a plurality ofsprings positioned to urge said closing ring to move the chasers to non-threading position, a
locking ring, an adjustable locking nut'on the body member engageable with the locking ring,
an operating ring mounted directly upon'said" closing and said locking rings and having means engageable with the locking ring for rotating said ring to a position to permit the closing ring to be moved axially of the body member by said springs to move the chasers to inoperative or non-threading position.
6. A threading die head comprising a bod member having a plurality oi! slots in its forward end, a plurality of chaser holders motinted on said body member and having means engageable in said slots to hold them on the body member, a closingring positioned about the body member and having projections engageable in slots in the said chaser holders for moving said holders to non-threading position upon a movement' of said closing ring axially oi the body member, a locking ring onv said body member, means for holding said locking ring in flxedaxial .position on said body member, an operating ring mounted directly on said closing ring and said locking ring, means on said operating ring engageable with said locking ring for rotating said locking ,ring to permit the closing ring to be moved axially of the ,body member to move the chaser holders to inoperative or non-threading position.

8. A threading. die head of the character described comprising a body member having a head,
' chaser holders carried by said head, each chaser holder having a slot the bottom of which is inclined to the axis of the die head, said slot being open throughout. its length in the peripheral surface of the chaser holder, and a closing memberreciprocably mounted on said body and having members with cam surfaces for engaging the bottoms of the slots in the chaser holder for closing the die.
9, A threading die head of the character described comprising a body member having a head, chaser holders carried by said head, each chaser holder having a slot the bottom of which is inclined to the axis'of the die head, said slot being open throughout its length in the peripheral surface of the chaser holder, a closing member reciprocabiy mounted on said body and having members with cam surfaces for engaging the bottoms, the slots in the chaser holder for closingthe'die, andcooperating means between said members having the cam surfaces and the slotted portions oi the chaser holders for positively opening the die when the closure member is retracted,

A threading die head of the kind described comprising a body,"chasers carried by said body 15 and movable between closed operative positions and open inoperative positions, a closing ring sleeved upon said body and adapted to shift said chasers upon axial movement thereof, a locking ring, said locking ring having abutments coop- 20 crating with abutments on the rear of the closing ring, a spring engageable with elements on said closing ring and on said locking ring and biased to cause relative rotary movement between said 'rings and an operating ring slidably mounted 25 on said closing ring and said locking ring and having a pin engageable with a spiral slot in said locking-ring for rotating the locking ring upon axial movement of the operating ring, said operating ring being keyed to the closing ring 30 to prevent rotary movement relative to the closing ring, and means for adjusting and securing said locking ring in fixed axial position on the said body member to determine the extent of opening of the thread cutting elements both in threading and in non-threading position.

13. A threading die head of the kind described,
comprising a body member having a flanged head, a plurality of radial grooves in said head adapted to receive corresponding tongues on chaser holders and a plurality of slots through said flanged head and intersecting said grooves, a closing ring having forwardly extending cam elements which pass through said slots and slide along cam sur-- faces in the said chaser holders, means also on the said cam elements cooperating with means on the said chaser holders for moving the chaser holders to non-threading position upon a retractive movement of said closing ring axially of said body member, a plurality of springs positioned between said closing ring and the flange on the said head for urging the closing ring to move the chaser holders to non-threading position, a locking ring, an adjustingmeans, means for urging said locking-ring against said adjusting means, means on the looking ring engageable with the closing ring for holding the latter in thread cutting position, an operating ring mounted on said closing ring and said locking ring, and meahs for causing relative rotary move- 69 ment between the operating and the locking rings when theoperating ring is moved axially of the body member, and means for causing reverse relative rotary movement when the operating ring is moved axially in the other direction on the body 65 member.
14. A threading die head comprising a body member having a plurality of radially movable chaser holders mounted thereon, tangential chasers mounted on the holders, a closing ring mount- 70 ed on said body member and having means engageable with said chaser holders to move them radially when said ring is moved axially of the body member, a spring engageable with said ring to move it in a direction to move the chaser 7 holders to open position, a locking ring adjustable axially of the body member for holding the closing ring in axial position on the body member and for determining its axial position thereon, a plurality of spiral slots in said locking ring, an operating ring mounted on said closing ring and said locking ring and having pins engageable in said slots, said operating ring being keyed to said closing ring to prevent rotation relative thereto, abutments on said locking ring cooperating with abutments on the closing ring for holding the latter in forward and threading position, movement of the operating ring axially of the body member causing rotation of the locking ring to cause the said abutments to become disengaged to permit axial rearward movement of said closing ring to move the chasers to non-threading position.
15. A die head comprising a body member, a
closing ring, a locking ring, an operating ring mounted on the closing ring and on the locking ring, an adjusting ring and chaser holders, said chaser holders being movably mounted on the face of the body member, the closing ring having prongs in angular slots in the chaser holders to move the chaser holders away from and toward the axis of the body member, means to lock said holders in a fixed position in relation to the body member, means to change the fixed position of the chaser holders to different positions in relation to the body member, means to move the closing ring axially relative to the body member, means to lock said closing ring in flxed position, means to rotate the locking ring to locked and unlocked position, and means urging rotation of the locking ring and holding it against the adjusting ring.
16. A die head comprising a body member, chaser holders and chasers radially movable on said body member, a closing ring axially movable on said body member and cooperatively engaging the chaser holders for moving the chasers radially in and out, and means cooperating with said closing ring in moving the chaser holders in and out on said body member including an adjusting member operable to adjust the threading size to the required diameter and also to move the chaser holders in and out'for-threading different diametrical sizes of work with the same chasers.
17. A die head comprising a body member, a closing ring, an operating ring, a locking ring and an adjusting ring, and resilient means between said closing ring and said locking ring for holding said locking ring against said adjusting ring and urging rotation of said locking ring.
18. A die head comprising a body member, a closing ring, an operating ring and a locking ring, adjustable means for holding said locking ring in axial position on the body member, and
means between said closing ring and said locking ring for holding said locking ring against said adjustable means, and comprising a cam surface on one of the rings and a spring pressed element on the other ring.
19. A die head having prong receiving openings'with outer surfaces parallel to the axis of the die head, chaser holders on said head. a
closing ring having prongs for engaging and moving said chaser holders radially to open and close the die, said prongs having outer surfaces complementary to the outer surfaces of the prong receiving openings and substantially parallel to the axis of the die and having their inner surfaces diverging outwardly from the base of the prong.
20. A die head having prong receiving openings with outer surfaces parallel to the axis of the die head, chaser holders on said head, a closing ring having prongs for engaging and moving said chaser holders radially of the die head to open and close the die, said prongs having outer surfaces complementary to the outer surfaces of the prong receiving openings and substantially parallel to the axis of the die head and having their inner surfaces diverging outwardly from the base of the prongs, and means between said outer and innerrsurfaces of the prongs for coacting with and engaging the chaser holders and producing an inward radial movement of the same upon an axial movement of the closing ring.
21. A die head comprising a body member, chaser holders and chasers radially movable on said body member, a closing ring axially movable on said body member and cooperatively engaging the chaser holders for moving the chasers radially in and out, and means cooperating with said closing ring in moving the chaser holders in and out on said body member including a locking ring cooperating with said closing ring and rotatable to move the chasers radially to threading and non-threading positions, an operating ring axially movable on said closing and locking rings and cooperating to efiect rotary movements of the locking ring by axial movements thereof with respect to said locking ring, and an adjusting member engaging said looking ring and operable to adjust the threading size to the required diameter and alsoto move the chaser holders in and out for threading different diametrical sizes of work with the same chasers.
22. A die head comprising a body member,
chaser holders and chasers movable on said body member, said chaser holders having angular slots, a closing ring having prongs engaging in said angular slots in the chaser holders to move them radially away from and toward the axis of the body member by axial movements of the closing ring, and means cooperating with said closing ring in moving the chaser holders in and out on said body member including a locking ring cooperating with said closing ring and rotatable to effect the radial movement of the chasers to threading and non-threading positions, 'an operating ring cooperating with said locking ring to effect rotary movements of the locking ring to locked and unlocked positions, an adjusting ring operable to change the fixed position of the chaser holders to'difl'erentpositions in relation to the body member for adjusting the thread size to the required diameter and also to move the chaser holders in and out for threading difierent diametricai sizes of work with the same chasers,
and means urging rotation of the locking ring and holding it against the adjusting ring.
23. A threading die head of the kind described comprising a body, chaser holders carried by said body and movable between closed operative positions and open inoperative positions, tangential chasers carried by said holders, a closing ring sleeved upon said body and adapted to shift said chaser holders and chasers upon axial movement thereof, a locking ring, said locking ring having abutments cooperating with abutments on the rear of the closing ring, a spring engageable with elements on said closing ring and on said locking ring and biased to cause relative rotary movement between said rings and an operating ring mounted on said closing ring and I the locking ring upon axial movement of the operating ring, said operating ring being keyed to the closing ring to prevent rotary movement relative to the closing ring.
24. A die head comprising a body member, a closing ring, a locking ring, an operating ring mounted on the closing ring and on the locking ring, an adjusting ring and chaser holders, tangential chasers carried by said chaser holders, said chaser holders being movably mounted on the face of the body member to position the chasers in and out of thread cutting position, the closing ring having prongs in angular slots in the chaser holders to move the chaser holders and chasers away from and toward the axis of the body member, means to lock said holders and chasers in a fixed position in relation to the body member, means to change the fixed position of the chaser holders and chasers to different positions in relation to the body member, means to move the closing ring axially relative to the body member, means to lock said closing ring in fixed position, means to rotate the locking ring to locked and unlocked position, and means urging rotation of the locking ring and holding it against the adjusting ring.
25. A die head comprising a body member, chaser holders mounted on said body member, tangential chasers mounted on said holders, a closing ring cooperating with said chaser holders,
an operating ring, a locking ring and an adjusting ring, and resilient means between said closing ring and said locking ring for holding said locking ring against said adjusting ring and urging rotation-of said locking ring.
26. A die head comprising a body member, chaser holders mounted ,on said body member, tangential chasers mounted on said holders, a closing ring cooperating with said chaser holders, springs between the body member and closing ring operating to retract the chaser holders and chasers to an outer non-thread cutting position, an operating ring operable to position the chaser holders and chasers to threading and non-threading position, a locking ring, adjustable means for holding said locking ring in axial position on the body member, and means between said closing ring and said locking ring for holding said locking ring against said adjustable means and comprising a cam surface on one of the rings and a spring pressed element on the other ring.
27. A thread cutting head designed to carry chaser holders at one end and having a rearwardly extending cylindrical surface, a closing ring slidable axially of said head and having prongs projecting longitudinally to receive the chaser holders, an axially shiftable operating ring for actuating said closing ring, said operative ring having a portion provided with a cylindrical surface in close sealing and constantly overlapping relation to said first cylindrical surface, and spring means housed within the overlapped sealed portions of the closing and operating rings, and arranged to constantly tend to septhreading and non-threading positions by movements of the closing ring axially o! the die head. and an operating ring also movable axially of the die head for actuating said closing ring, said operating ring normally closely engaging the outer surface of the closing ring and having a portion provided with a cylindrical surface in close sealing and constantly overlapping relation with said cylindrical surface of the body member thereby providing a chamber'in the die head structure, and means housed in said chamber tending to urge said closure member to chaser-retracting position.
