' VALANCE STRUCTURE Filed Oct. 22-, 1949 I NV EN TOR. Giae: (w/v Patented Dec. 19, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 Claims. 1
The present invention is directed to curtains for windows and more particularly to a structure of valance adapted for use in various positions.
It is customary to hang curtains on thesides of a window by means of a curtain rod and also to hang a valance over the curtain, and usually suspended by a separate curtain rod. Such a valance often bears at the sides thereof a depending portion called a jabot. It is desirable for decorative purposes that the jabot be capable of being positioned either in its extended position or looped to give a different effect.
Inview of the above, it is among the objects of the present invention to provide a valance structure which may be placed in a plurality of positions in order to give various decorative effects.
It is also among the objects of the present invention to provide a structure of the type described which may be applied to a single window or to a series of windows in a group to allow various decorative effects to be formed.
It is further among the objects of the present invention to provide a valance structure having a jabot, such that it may be conveniently and simply arranged on the rod carrying the valance to give a looped effect.
In practicing the invention there is provided the usual valance having the depending sides or jabot portions and usually being provided with a rufiie along its entire width. Instead of providing a simple seam or hem at the lower end of the jabot for finishing purposes, a substantial portion of the end of the fabric is folded on itself and stitched by a single or double line of stitching so as to form a passage through the end of the jabot. Generally this passage has its axis at approximately right angles to the axis of the passageway in the top of the valance when the valance is hung on the rod and the jabot is in depending position.
With such a structure, it is a simple matter to thread the passage of the jabot onto the end of the rod carrying the valance and a looped effect is obtained. One or both sides of the valance may be so looped and in a case where two or more windows are adjacent to each other, various arrangements may be made.
In the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a wall of a room having three windows in unitary relationship and being provided with valances made in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the lower end of the jabot, showing the specific construction of the passage therein; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
With reference to Fig. 1, the wall I of the room is provided with three windows identified as 2, 3 and 4 in equally spaced relationship. On the windows are valances 5, 6 and I, respectively, each of them being provided with a ruflle 8 along its-entire extent and attached to the valance by stitching 9 along a sinuous line. Other styles of valances are also suitable for the purpose.
Each of the valances has a passageway I 0 along the top edge thereof formed as usual by folding the fabric on itself and stitching, or by sewing an additional piece of fabric along the top edge to form a passageway. Curtain rods H' suitably secured to the top of the window frame extend through passageways Hi and support the valance in the usual manner.
The sides l2 of the valance when it is hung on a window, extends downwardly, as shown to the right and left of Fig. 1. The end of ruille 8 is folded as shown at l3 to provide a lateral fold l4 thereon. Twolines of stitching i5 and I6 substantially parallel to each other and to fold [4, are formed in ruille 8-. The space I! constitutes apassage for a curtain rod.
I When it is desired to make an arrangement such as is shown in Fig.1, depending sides l2 of the several valances are raised and the rods II extended through passages ll. Depending sides I2 are allowed to remain in the extended position. This gives a composite and highly desirable decorative effect.
When a single window is provided with the structure of the present-invention, the sides of the valance may both be in extended position or both in the loop position, as shown on window 3. In some cases it may be desirable with a single window to have one side down and the other side looped as shown in Figs. 2 or 4. When a unit of two windows is provided with the present structure, the arrangement may be that of the combination of windows 2 and 4.
Although the invention has been described setting forth a single embodiment thereof, the invention is not limited thereto but variations in the details may be made within the spirit of the invention. For instance, the several arrangements of the jabot may be altered at will to suit the particular situation involved. The passage through the end of the ruiile need not be exactly at right angles to the axis'of passageway l0 but may be at ange thereto, although the best results are obtained by the arrangement shown in the drawing. Passage I! may be made of a separate piece of fabric stitched to the end of the jabot or a passage may be formed by other means as by a series of loops through which the rod may pass. Valances of other configurations and constructions may be provided with the novel structure of the present invention.
These and other changes in the details of the invention may be made within the principles herein set forth and the invention is to be broadly construed and not to be limited except by the character of the claims appended hereto.
I claim: 1. In a valance for a curtain having an upper substantially horizontal edge and .a short drape below said passageway, said passage .constitut-I ing means to thread said end on said red and allow said jabot to hang in the form .of a loop.
