To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Goonwnv, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Gonnecticuahave invented new Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the sam'e,

This invention relates to an improvementin that class of buttons which carry in themselves means' for securing them to the'garment; and it consists in a button constructed,

The button proper consistsof a cup-shaped disk, at, and a cup-shaped cap, b, which is placed over the disk at and closed down upon its under side, and so as to leave a space between the cap and the said disk,;as seen in Fig. 2. Into the disk at, before the two parts a b are closed together, the neck 0 is secured.

This neck consists of a flanged tube,'the un- 0 flanged end contracted, so as to form a shoulder upon which-the disk at will set, the end of the tube extending through the disk, so as to be turned down upon the inside of the disk, as seen at d, Fig. 2, the flanged end being dis- 5 tant from the disk or back it according to-the length required for the neck or shank, the

Through this tubular neck a long eyelet, e, is inserted, the flanged end above the disk, as seen'in Fig. 2. Then the cap is closed upon the disk or back, and so as to take afirm bearing upon the flange-of theeyelet e, clamping, as it were, the flange between the cap or front and the turnedover portion (1 of the neck. The eyelet is of sufficient length to extend beyond the flange of the neck far enough to pass through the thing to which the button is. to be attached. This completes the butration through the material to which it is to be attached, (represented as A, Fig. 3,) and through this perforation insert the open -end of the eyelet 6. Then set that open end upon the reverse side, substantially as a common eyelet is set. The turned-over end of the eyelet often exposesa roughnessof edge, which wears upon the adjacent garment-a serious objection tothe class of button-fasteners which are secured in this manner. 'To overcome this difficulty I construct the collar f of cup shape, with a countersunk-like recess in the center, open through the collar corresponding to the diameter of the eyelet, the eyelet introduced through the ordinary flat collar but the end of the eyelet is struck into this recess, so that v the portion of the collar around the recess protects or incloses the edge of the eyelet and parts of the garment. This also firmly holds the edge of the collar down upon that side of the garment. This recessed collar may be used with eyelet-like button-fastenings other than that here shown. tion is not therefore limited to this particular button. 7 v

I claim- 1.
