Description

l LORENZO HOLTSLANDER, OF OBERLIN, OHIO.
MARINE PROPELLER.
Specication of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may cof/wcm:
Be it known that I, LORENZO I-IoLTs- LANDER, of Oberlin, county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Machinery Used for Propelling Vessels or Boat-s by Vater Propulsion; and I do hereby declare that the following is substantially a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings hereto attached, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure No. l is a perspective view, and Nos. 2 and 3 sectional parts thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in a device to change the location of the valves and valve seats of a water propeller or pump, used for water propulsion, and thus reverse the motion of a vessel and the combination, forward, or in the bows, of a res ervoir and several small pipes through which a supply of water is obtained for the propellers.
To enable others skilled in mechanics to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I use .the double seated valve box (B Fig. No. 3 in drawings attached) with a ball valve (V) made of metal, hollow, and strong enough for my purpose. The valve box (B) is made a little deeper than would ordinarily be necessary with valve seats in two, opposite sides. I use a movable grate (G) or false bott-om, for the valve to travel on, which grate is kept in place by a projection from each corner of the grate, which work in angular or arc slots (S) Fig. 3, in the two sides of the valve box (B) which are in juxtaposition to the sides in which are the valve seats. I elevate either end of the grate, desired, by the rods (R, R,) which pass through the bottom of the valve box (B), and a packing box if necessary, vertically and which are operated by al lever (L) whose fulcrum F) is placed so as to give equal motion to the rods operating the grate (G). The connection of the rods (R, R,) with the lever (L) is by means of a slot joint to give a motion to the rods (R, R) at right angles with the bottom of the valve box (B). It will be seen that as the extended end of the lever (L) is ele- 25,336, dated September 6, 1859.
vated or depressed, it by the rods elevates one or the other ends of the grate (G) and when either end of the grate is above the lower edge of its neighboring valve seat, the valve cannot find that seat but readily finds the opposite one. In attaching these valve boxes to a propeller, as in Fig. No. 2, whose four valve boxes are attached to constitute with the cylinder a single cylinder double action, suction and force propeller, I make one valve seat the immediate passage to the cylinder and the other the passage to the connecting pipe, then by any convenient ar` rangement I connect the valve box levers to one lever, so that a single motion will change all the valve seats of a propeller, being careful that the levers of the valve boxes on either side of a propeller are parallel to each other, making one side the supply side and the other the discharge side.
In obtaining a supply of water for propelling vessels or boats by water propulsion I place forward in the bows of the vessel a reservoir (Re. Fig. No. l) capable of holding water enough to supply two or three strokes of the propeller, which I supply through several small pipes (p p p 79 79) connecting with the reservoir and passing through the bows, in different directions, below the water line. Thesesmall pipes should be numerous enough to provide the reservoir with a generous supply of water.-
The reservoir and propellers I connect with the usual supply pipe. The small pipes will prevent obstructions reaching the valves. Reservoir, pipes, valve boxes and all parts should be' constructed sufficiently strong to perform the work required.
What I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The device, herein described, for changing valve seats as applied to water-propellers, to reverse the motion of vessels or boats, and also the combination of the small forward pipes (79 p p p) with the reservoir (Re.) substantially as described.
LORENZO HOLTSLANDER.
