Patented Dec. 12, 1950 'l' OFFHCE The present invention relates to bust supports. The need for adjustable bust supports has led to designs which, while theoretically satisfactory, involve a multiplicity of parts, hence being inconvenient to wear, difficult to adjust, and relatively high in price. Other developments, while providing the desired adjustability, fail to give needed support. In a known form of breast support, for example, each breast pocket consists of two overlapping sections which are substantially triangular, with a curved draft, and are loosely connected together at their apices by a connecting strap linked to a shoulder strap, the latter by its upward pull tending to maintain the two in a bust support, breast pockets each having a non-yieldable supporting portion and a yieldable portion accommodating breasts of various sizes.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a bust sup-port having shoulder straps, means independent of said shoulder straps for holding adjacent sections of each breast pocket in overlapping relation.

The above and other objects will become apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 shows a bust support according to the invention, embodied in a brassiere being worn by the user;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of the brassiere illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the rear portions thereof;

Fig. 3 shows a modified form of fastener adapted to be used in combination with the brassiere of 1;

Fig. l shows a bust support according to the invention incorporated in a foundation garment.

The hrassiere 59, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a pair of breast poolets or cups generally indicated at H and I2. respectively, a band it, and shoulstraps l5 connecting the ends of band It with pockets !2, respectively. The band l3 comprises two side portions !6, ll, an elastic insert l3 having a doubled-up lower edge as indicated by stitching i9, and a non-elastic dart 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-42) portion 28 interconnecting insert M with pockets El and E2. The side portions l3 and ill may terminate in non-elastic end portions 2!, 22, respectively, carrying fastening means such as hooks 23 and eyes 24%, end portion 22 being con nected to side portion ll by means of an elastic strap 25.

Each of the cups ll, it consists of a segmental portion 2 secured by its periphery to an arcuate cutout 2? of the band l3, and two roughly trapezoidal portions 28, 29 fastened at their bases, in slightly overlapping relation, to the radial edges oi the circular segment 2t. Portion 26 is preferably of the same non-elastic material that constitutes the portions l6, ll and 26 of the band it, while portions 28 and 29 may be made of lace as shown in the drawing.

An edge of each of the trapezoidal portions of flaps 23, 29 is secured to band It at a respective section 31!, 3! of the arcuate cutout 21 which does not adjoin the segment 25. The upper ends of the opposite, free edges 32, 33 are connected by means of elastic straps 3G, 35, respectively, with the arc sections 3!. of the band it. strap connected to flap 29 stretching across part of flap 28 and strap 35 connected to flap 28 stretching across part of flap 29.

It will be seen that straps 3t, 35 tend to keep the edges 32, 33 of each breast pocket in overlapping relation throughout the length of these edges, by virtue of their engaging the uppermost, free corner of the flaps and tending to draw same toward the opposite section of the arcuate cutout.

Secured to the overlapping portions 23, 29 of each breast pocket ll, l2 are the ends of a nonelastic strap 36, respectively. Strap 36 passes through a ring or eye 38 which also retains the doubled-up end 3% of shoulder strap Hi, said end terminating in a buckle ll; affording adjustability to strap i l. Similarly, strap 3? passes through ring or eye 4!, as does the doubled-up end 2 of shoulder strap l5 which terminates in buckle l3.

will be clearly seen from Fig. 1, portion 23 of each cup 5 l l2 firmly supports the breast while portions 23, 2t yieldably enclose the upper breast portion only, fitting snugly thereover by virtue of the resilient straps 34, While the portions 26 are preferably non-elastic, their relative portion may be varied to some extent because of the resiliency of insert it. Additional resiliency to fit varying girth is provided by the elastic strap 25,

while a plurality of rows of eyes 24 afiord adjustability to the band IS.

A modification of the closure means '22 through 25, Fig. 2, is shown in Fig. 3. Here a pair of non-elastic strips of material 44, 45 are secured to the end of side portion [6 and are provided with spaced eyelets 06 to accommodate a pair of hooks 47, the latter being held by the doubled-up elastic ribbons 48, 49 secured to the end of side portion Fig. 4 shows the bust support according to the invention incorporated in a foundation garment, such as slip 50. Breast pockets ll, [2, band l3 and shoulder straps l4, I are in their same relative position as in Figs. 1 and 2, band [3 being, however, joined to the slip 50 along its lower edge 5 I.

Although the invention has been described with particular reference to certain specific embodiments shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the particular forms described and illustrated except as so limited by the appended claim.

I claim:

A bust support comprising a pair of breast pockets, a band having two arcuate cutouts, a pair of shoulder straps each secured to a respective end of said band and extending toward a re spective one of said breast pockets, each of said breast pockets comprisin a lower segmenta1 portion joined to said band along part of a respective cutout and further comprising a pair of roughly trapezoidal flaps arranged side by side, each of said flaps having a first edge joined to said segmental portion and a, second, adjacent edge joined to said band along a remaining part of said respective cutout, the edges of said flaps respectively opposite said second edges overlapping each other in a loose manner along a line substantially forming a continuation of the respective shoulder strap, said shoulder strap being provided with two extremities each engagin a respective one of said flaps, an elastic strap secured to the outer one of said flaps and stretched from a point adjacent the free corner of said outer flap across part of the inner one of said flaps toward the center of said band, and an elastic strap secured to the inner one of said flaps and stretched from a point adjacent the free corner of said inner flap across part of the outer one of said flaps toward the end of said band, said elastic straps being secured to said band adjacent said respective cutout.
