Description
Dec. 5, 1950 N. R. KAMFJORD ADJUSTABLE HINGE Filed Jan. 7, 1947 Patented Dec. 5, 1 950 Application January 7, 1947,;Senial" No. 720,505 In Norway January 22, 1946 *1 Claims. (01. 1 -133) This invention relates to adjustable hinges. Hinges, especially those used for supporting relatively heavy objects, such as doors, windows or the like, in the course of time need adjustment.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and effective arrangement for making such adjustments.
Another object is to provide an arrangement, by which adjustments may be efiected without entirely separating the two parts of the hinges.
A further object of the invention is an arrangement, which may be used in hinges of common types without materially altering the process of their manufacture.
Still another object is to provide an arrangement, whereby the hinge may be lubricated or oiled effectively without displacing the hinge parts in relation to each other.
Other objects of the invention will be evident from the following description and the drawing relative thereto, in which Figure l is a view of a hinge, the adjustment of which is effected by inserting steel balls of difierent diameters between the two parts of the hinge, the hinge top member being shown as lifted a little.
Figure 2 is a similar view of a hinge adjustable by means of discs, the hinge top member being shown in normal position, and
Figure 3 illustrates an auxiliary device for use in efiecting an adjustment.
Referring to Figure 1 the hinge comprises a lower member I and a top member 2, each having a cylindrical portion, the lower member I being provided with a stud 6 rotatably and displaceably received by a cylindrical sleeve 9 forming part of the top member 2. In the top portion of said sleeve 9 is secured a stud or stopper ill in fixed relation thereto. A ball 4 is provided between the ends of studs 6 and Hi. When the door or the like, with the top hinge member attached thereto, is lowered to its normal position said ball will take up the actual pressure exerted upon the hinge. In doing so the ball rests in recesses provided in the ends of studs 6 and I0. When in the course of time the door has sunk and the hinge for this or other reasons needs adjustment, such adjustment is made by removing 2 case may be, when "the hinge top member 2 has been lifted somewhat, for instance a distance of 1 cm., as illustrated in Figure l."
In order to facilitate removal of a ball, said aperture 3 is provided, suitably at the bottom thereof, with a small enlargement or notch 3',, through which may be inserted a suitable implement, for instance a match or a pin for engaging the ball below the centre thereof. Thus it is possible by inserting a match or pin or other implement through the opening 3' to dislodge the ball 4 from the top of the stud 6 tipping it out of the sleeve 9 at the aperture 3.
When an adjustment is to be made the top member 2 of the hinge as shown in the figure is raised somewhat, say 1 cm., above the lower member I, without being entirely detached. In order to maintain the relative position of the members thus obtained, an implement 5, as shown in Figure 3, may be inserted between the parts I and 2. Said implement consists of a suitably shaped, resilient bail 5, which is placed so as to embrace the peg 6 of the lowermost hinge member I and support the topmost hinge member 2 when raised. Said implement may be easily withdrawn by engaging its end portion. Of course, other suitable forms of implements may be used if desired.
Figure 2 illustrates an embodiment, which is adapted for insertion of adjusting discs 1. The aperture 8 of the side wall may have any suitable shape, but is preferably rectangular as shown. After being inserted edgewise through the aperture the disc or discs will tilt and then rest horizontally upon the top end of the peg 6 of the lower hinge member 2.
The lubrication of the hinge may easily be effected through the aperture in femalepart of the top member without raising the door or the like.
I claim:
1. An adjustable hinge comprising a pair of leaf members, one of said leaf members provided with a socket having an end wall and the other of said leaf members provided with a pintle for insertion in said socket, an adjusting member within said socket in bearing relation between said end wall and the end of said pintle, said socket having an aperture in the longitudinal wall thereof for insertion of said adjusting memher.
2. An adjustable hinge according to claim 1 wherein said adjusting member is a ball.
3. An adjustable hinge according to claim 1. wherein said adjusting member is a disc,
4. An adjustable hinge comprising a pair of cooperating leaf members vertically mounted one above the other, the top leaf member provided with a socket having an end wall and the bottom leaf member provided with a pintle for insertion in said socket, and an adjusting member within said socket in bearing relation between said end wall and the end of said pintle, said socket having an aperture in the longitudinal wall thereof for insertion of said adjusting memher.
5. An adjustable hinge according to claim 4 in which the longitudinal wall of said socket is provided with a, circular aperture for insertion of a spherical adjusting member.
6. An adjustable hinge according to claim 4 in which the longitudinal wall of said socket is provided with a rectangular aperture for insertion of a disc-shaped adjusting member.
which the edge of said aperture is notched for insertion of an implement for removal of said adjusting member.
NILS RUDOLF KAMF'JORD.
